Contrary to popular belief, folklore exists within every society, including our modern one. Folklore continues to prevail in our contemporary society, in many different forms, including but not limited to legends, mythology, clothing, songs, jokes, holidays, foods, and games. This paper discusses the role that modern mass media has in the production and consumption of folklore. We take an in-depth look at the creation and spread of the folkloric creature known as Slender Man. Slender Man is a folkloric icon that was born on the Internet and can serve as an example of the proliferation of folkloric material by way of mass media such as television, radio, newspapers, and digital means.
