Nafees Mansoor is serving as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering of University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB). He joined the department in January 2016, just after finishing his Ph.D. from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). Earlier, he received the Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science and Master of Science degree in Telecommunication Engineering from Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB). Dr. Mansoor has more than 10 years work experience both in academia and industry where he worked at some national and international reputed organisations, namely UTM, IUB, Axiata, etc.
Moreover, besides teaching, Dr. Mansoor is also an active researcher. He is the recipient of several awards which includes best paper awards at ICAICT 2016 (Bangladesh), RISP-NCCP 2015 (Malaysia), AUN/SEED-Net ICEEE 2014 (Malaysia), and MJJIS 2013 (Japan). He has also received the Best Research Proposal Award at JACTIM Research Proposal Contest, 2012 in Malaysia and honoured as Cum Luade at his B.Sc. degree in 2005

Research on wireless sensor network (WSN) has increased tremendously throughout the years. In WSN... more Research on wireless sensor network (WSN) has increased tremendously throughout the years. In WSN, sensor nodes are deployed to operate autonomously in remote environments. Depending on the network orientation, WSN can be of two types: flat network and hierarchical or cluster-based network. Various advantages of cluster-based WSN are energy efficiency, better network communication, efficient topology management, minimized delay, and so forth. Consequently, clustering has become a key research area in WSN. Different approaches for WSN, using cluster concepts, have been proposed. The objective of this paper is to review and analyze the latest prominent cluster-based WSN algorithms using various measurement parameters. In this paper, unique performance metrics are designed which efficiently evaluate prominent clustering schemes. Moreover, we also develop taxonomy for the classification of the clustering schemes. Based on performance metrics, quantitative and qualitative analyses are performed to compare the advantages and disadvantages of the algorithms. Finally, we also put forward open research issues in the development of low cost, scalable, robust clustering schemes.

In this article, the development of an efficient and reliable multiple description coding (MDC) s... more In this article, the development of an efficient and reliable multiple description coding (MDC) scheme over unreliable communication networks is described. A general framework of multiple description robust communication system with 2- and 4-channel cases is presented with a proposed block-based DC separation approach. The advantage of this system is that, if all the channels work, a high quality reconstruction can be achieved, while a lower but still acceptable quality can be achieved if some of the channels are lost. The peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR), mean squared error (MSE), bit rate, entropy and redundancy are also calculated with the proposed method to analyze the reconstruction quality. It is found that the proposed method gives comprehensive improvements over the other recently developed methods.

At the moment, there are five or six major mobile phone operators providing services in Banglades... more At the moment, there are five or six major mobile phone operators providing services in Bangladesh. These operators offer various packages (call rates) to their users and also to attract the new users. All of these packages are different from each other and also differ from operator to operator. Some operator may offer a cheap call rate from 8 am to 12 pm while the other may offer the cheapest package from 12 am to 6 am for regular calls. There are other facilities such as Friends and Family commonly known as FnF, which offers a flat call rate for 24 hours for selected number(s). To enjoy all the available facilities from the various mobile operators, users may use more than one SIM (Subscriber Identification Module), where they can activate a particular SIM at a particular time of the day. But the problem with this approach is that users have to switch off the set and then activate the desired SIM manually. This problem motivated us to use multiple SIM at the same time so that the cheapest traffic operator at the time of call generation can be selected automatically. The idea is to facilitate the mobile phone set with software, which at the time of call generation, checks the database, for call rate as well as the calling number with another database storing the FnF list. For this work, a database of call rate of various operators throughout the day has to be maintained. We have developed an algorithm for selecting the cheapest operator and developed a simulator for that algorithm. According to the proposed algorithm, if the calling number is not in the FnF list, the SIM with the lowest call rate will be activated and the call will be established through that particular SIM’s operator. From the simulated results, it is found that the user making a 10–15 calls/day can save upto 20% of his regular bills. This can be a great safe for users making frequent calls and paying big bills.

For the last few years, the next generation wireless networks have been received a considerable a... more For the last few years, the next generation wireless networks have been received a considerable attention in the communication engineering community because of its feature that it will support the vertical handoff mechanism in which users can maintain the connections by switching from one network to another (e.g., from IEEE 802.11b to CDMA 1xRTT or UMTS network, and vice versa) without any discontinuity. According to vertical handoff mechanism, on the arrival of a service request from a smart space user, the network must assign one of the available access networks based on either operator policies or user preferences or a combination of both by employing a suitable decision algorithm. In this article, a vertical handover algorithm is proposed so that the switching between networks can be carried out according to the state of the current operation of the mobile node as well as user preferences, which would benefit the users and ensure the Quality of Service (QoS).

The advantage of MDC is that, if all the channels work, a high quality, possibly lossless, reconstruction can be achieved from all the received descriptions. On the other hand, a lower but still acceptable quality can be achieved if some of the channels are not received at all. In this article, a general framework of an efficient multiple description robust communication system with 2- and 4-channel cases is presented with a proposed block-based DC reallocation approach using intrinsic correlation. The peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR), mean squared error (MSE), bit rate, and entropy are calculated with the proposed method to analyze the reconstruction quality and the calculated results are compared with those of the other MDC methods. It is found that the proposed method, which uses an intrinsic correlation, gives comprehensive improvements over the other recently developed methods.

Along with the spectrum scarcity problem, radio spectrums are also underutilized. Cognitive radio practices an open spectrum allocation technique, which can ensure efficient handling of the frequency bands. Suitable network model is a must for the implementation of cognitive radio networks. In this paper, an efficient cluster model for cognitive radio ad-hoc networks is presented using graph theory. The proposed clustering model is defined as a maximum edge biclique problem, where the spatial variations of spectrum availability are considered. This clustering scheme aims to maintain set of free common channels in every cluster, which allows smooth shifting among control channels. A parameter called Cluster Head Determination Factor (CHDF) is also introduced to select cluster-heads where clusters’ operations are coordinated by cluster-heads. Each cluster comprises of a secondary cluster- head to combat the re-clustering issue for mobile nodes. Finally, simulation and comparative studies are conducted to evaluate the performance of the proposed method.

Cognitive radio practices an open spectrum allocation technique to make efficient utilization of the wireless radio spectrum and reduces the bottleneck on the frequency bands. A robust architecture with suitable communication protocol is a precondition in the deployment of cognitive radio networks. A novel cluster-based architecture for an ad-hoc cognitive radio network is proposed in this paper, where the spatial variations of spectrum opportunities are considered for clustering. Our cluster formation is defined as a maximum edge biclique problem. Each cluster consists with a set of free common channels, which benefits smooth shift between control channels. A set of cognitive radio nodes are grouped into the same cluster if they sense similar free channels and are within the communication range of the leader node called cluster head. The selection of cluster head is based on a parameter called Cluster Head Determination Factor (CHDF). Considering the re-clustering issue for mobile nodes, we also introduce the concept of secondary cluster-head. The secondary cluster-head takes charge of a cluster whenever a cluster-head moves out from the cluster. Proposed clusters adapt themselves dynamically with respect to spectrum availability, and the high mobility of the nodes. Finally, we simulate the proposed architecture to evaluate the performance of our method.

With the mounting interest on cognitive radio (CR) technology in wireless communication systems, ... more With the mounting interest on cognitive radio (CR) technology in wireless communication systems, it is anticipated that CR-enabled vehicular networks will play a vigorous role in the enrichment of communication efficiency in vehicular network. This paper presents a Cognitive Radio enabled VANET for multi-agent based intelligent traffic management system. A skeleton for intelligent learning and decision mechanism for Central Traffic Management is also proposed and discussed in the model. The proposed model has two distinct information exchange system layouts. One is dynamic (vehicle to vehicle) and another is semi-dynamic (vehicle to Road-Side-Unit). For the vehicle-2-vehicle communication, the proposed model assumes that vehicles can communicate with each other using available wireless resources with the help cognitive radio mechanism. Therefore, the diagnosis and prediction of heart disease is persuading many researchers to develop intelligent medical decision support systems. Machine Learning has been demonstrated to be viable in helping with decision making and predictions from the huge amount of clinical data delivered by the medical care. This paper aims to improve the accuracy of machine learning models which can help to make informed decision and prediction of heart attack. We have applied six machine learning classification algorithms: Support Vector Machine, Random Forest, K Nearest Neighbors, Gaussian Naive Bayes, Decision Tree and Logistic Regression. Additionally, an extensive comparison of machine learning techniques has been carried out. Our research work suggests that machine learning methods with data balancing techniques are effective tools for stroke prediction with imbalanced data. Therefore, Synthetic Minority Over-Sampling Technique (SMOTE) has been applied in our model. Hence, it is anticipated that Random Forest excels with the highest accuracy of 96% in heart attack prediction regarding performance metrics.

In many circumstances, the colony requires a quick migration for their safety. This strategy is envisaged to have practical applications in swarm robotics. In this paper, evolutionary search algorithms were applied on an agent based model that captures the house hunting strategy of the honeybees. Four search algorithms were applied (random search, mutation hill climber, genetic algorithm and simulated annealing) to find the range of parameters that lead to fast emigration of the colony. We find that a low value in the quorum and initial percentage of the scouts with high initial exploration time favors the minimization of the emigration time of the colony. The novelty in this paper lies in the use of evolutionary search strategies for fast emigration.

Hence, the IoT concept plays a vital role in managing and controlling the wireless devices over the Internet. Therefore, IoT is considered to be the third wave of information and communication technology (ICT) after eras of the Internet and cellular networks. Besides, the post-COVID-19 world is expected to more sensor-centric to ensure lesser human interactions. Since a humongous number of sensors are intended to be deployed in IoT, efficient data communication requires the network to be clustered physically or logically. Consequently, the selection of the appropriate sensor(s) for data processing and gathering is vital in IoT. Several sensor selection techniques in IoT have been proposed recently, still, sensor searching remains quite a new research field. Therefore, several sensor searching methods for IoT are studied and presented in this paper. Moreover, the strengths and limitations of the existing sensor searching techniques are also outlined in the paper. Hence, the new performance metrics are presented in the paper, where the existing techniques for searching are analyzed.

Classification of Bangla Compound Characters Using a HOG-CNN Hybrid Model

Automatic handwriting recognition is challenging task due to its sheer variety of acceptable styl... more Automatic handwriting recognition is challenging task due to its sheer variety of acceptable stylistic differences. This is especially true for scripts with large character sets. Bangla, the sixth most widely spoken language in the world has a complex, large and rich set of compound characters. In this study, a hybrid deep learning model is proposed which combines the use of the manually designed feature Histogram of Oriented Gradients (HOG), with the adaptively learned features of a Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN). The proposed hybrid model was trained on the CMATERDB 3.1.3.3, a Bangla compound character data set which divides Bangla compound characters into 177 broad classes and 199 specific classes. The results demonstrate that CNN-only models achieve over 91% and 92% test accuracy respectively. Furthermore, it is shown that the proposed model, which incorporates HOG features with a CNN, achieves over 92.50% test accuracy on each division. While there is still room for improvement, these results are significantly better than currently published state of art on this data set.

Seamless Switching in Multiple-SIM Mobile Phone

At the moment, there are five or six major mobile phone operators providing services in Banglades... more At the moment, there are five or six major mobile phone operators providing services in Bangladesh. These operators offer various packages (call rates) to their users and also to attract the new users. All of these packages are different from each other and also differ from operator to operator. Some operator may offer a cheap call rate from 8 am to 12 pm while the other may offer the cheapest package from 12 am to 6 am for regular calls. There are other facilities such as Friends and Family commonly known as FnF, which offers a flat call rate for 24 hours for selected number(s). To enjoy all the available facilities from the various mobile operators, users may use more than one SIM (Subscriber Identification Module), where they can activate a particular SIM at a particular time of the day. But the problem with this approach is that users have to switch off the set and then activate the desired SIM manually. This problem motivated us to use multiple SIM at the same time so that the cheapest traffic operator at the time of call generation can be selected automatically. The idea is to facilitate the mobile phone set with software, which at the time of call generation, checks the database, for call rate as well as the calling number with another database storing the FnF list. For this work, a database of call rate of various operators throughout the day has to be maintained. We have developed an algorithm for selecting the cheapest operator and developed a simulator for that algorithm. According to the proposed algorithm, if the calling number is not in the FnF list, the SIM with the lowest call rate will be activated and the call will be established through that particular SIM’s operator. From the simulated results, it is found that the user making a 10–15 calls/day can save upto 20% of his regular bills. This can be a great safe for users making frequent calls and paying big bills.

This paper presents a delay and energy-based (DEB) routing protocol for the cognitive radio ad ho... more This paper presents a delay and energy-based (DEB) routing protocol for the cognitive radio ad hoc networks (CRAHN). In the proposed system, a clustering approach is considered to divide the network, where the cluster formation is based on spatial variations of the spectrum availability. Once the cluster-based network is formed, the proposed protocol enables any source node to search and establish an efficient route to the destination node. Defined as a weighted graph problem, the proposed DEB routing protocol considers delay and energy to be the routing metric. Therefore, a link weight is measured through switching and queuing delay of the nodes along with their residual energy. It is anticipated that the proposed protocol selects stable paths while ensuring fast data delivery. The performance of the DEB protocol has been assessed through simulation and compared the results with existing protocols. It is observed that DEB exhibits better performance by outdoing the other protocols.
