Gérald Côté a obtenu son doctorat en ethnomusicologie en 1997. Depuis 1987, il enseigne l’histoire du jazz, du blues, du rock et de la musique populaire américaine dans diverses universités au Québec. Il publie plusieurs essais dont Les 101 blues du Québec et Processus de création et musique populaire, ainsi que de nombreux articles et conférences données en Roumanie, au Brésil, au Mexique et en Afrique. Il a été le directeur du Centre de recherche ethnomusicologique Acte Sept (CREAS) de 1995 à 2005, un centre d’étude sur la pratique traditionnelle des musiques maliennes situé à Bamako, ce qui l’a amené à passer plusieurs séjours sur la côte ouest-africaine. En plus d’enseigner et de faire de la recherche sur la musique et la culture, Gérald Côté est souvent consulté pour des productions de documentaires internationaux (Inde, Afrique, Équateur). En 2011, il a travaillé à la conception d’une exposition internationale au Musée de la civilisation de Québec sur le thème de l’influence musicale de l’Afrique sur la musique des continents américains et des Antilles. Le succès de son dernier livre Jazz vu de l’intérieur - pour une anthropologie des musiques afro-américaines, lui a assuré une réédition en octobre 2011 et a fait l’objet de deux conférences au Berklee Colledge of Music de Boston. À l’égard de ses travaux sur le jazz et les musiques du monde, Gérald Côté a été invité à plusieurs reprises à des festivals de jazz ainsi qu’à offrir des séminaires en espagnol à l’Université de Veracruz au Mexique. L’ensemble de ses ouvrages porte sur le processus créatif en lien avec son contexte et il a donné plusieurs conférences à travers le monde sur ce thème. En tant que professeur invité à l’Université Laval de Québec, il poursuit toujours ses recherches sur les différents facteurs qui motivent la créativité au sein des différentes cultures du monde.

Gérald Côté fait une comparaison des modes de transmission du savoir entre son héritage culturel (l’héritage occidental) et celui des Cris de la baie James pour en venir à présenter quelques pistes de solution ainsi qu’un témoignage sur son expérience de terrain.

québécoise», débuté en 2009, de... more Dans le cadre du projet de recherche-création «Remixer la chanson québécoise», débuté en 2009, des remixeurs d'origines diverses (France, Roumanie, Maroc, Cuba, mais aussi Québec) et issus de traditions musicales variées (avant-garde, pop, folklore électroacoustique, etc.) ont été invités à produire une série de 13 remixes avec une seule contrainte : les remixes devaient comprendre des extraits d'enregistrements de chansons québécoises d'avant les années 1950. Ce projet, qui a fait l'objet d'une enquête ethnographique étalée sur 3 années (menée par Gérald Côté), mobilise intensément le numérique, tant en ce qui concerne la production artistique que la collecte et l'analyse des données ethnographiques. La question de la diffusion (artistique et scientifique), sur support numérique, est donc au cœur de la démarche finale du projet.

Les entrevues enregistrées ont été réalisées en deux temps et deux lieux, soit à sa résidence de Saint-Sauveur en novembre 2013 et à sa résidence de Floride, en février 2014, février 2015 et février 2016. Elles ont toutes été retranscrites et remises dans un français standard. Il s’agit d’entrevues spontanées avec des questions ouvertes sur des thèmes déterminés qui avaient été proposés à l’avance à M. Perry. Pour cet article, trois thèmes ont été choisis en fonction de leurs capacités à révéler l’essentiel de la vision et la philosophie de M. Perry sur l’enregistrement de la musique au moment où l’on passait progressivement des technologies analogiques aux systèmes numériques : son parcours professionnel, sa vision et sa conception du travail de studio et la technologie au service de la créativité et de la musique.
québécoise», débuté en 2009, des remixeurs d'origines diverses (France,
Roumanie, Maroc, Cuba, mais aussi Québec) et issus de traditions musicales variées (avant-garde, pop, folklore électroacoustique, etc.) ont été invités à produire une série de 13 remixes avec une seule contrainte : les remixes devaient comprendre des extraits d'enregistrements de chansons québécoises d'avant les années 1950. Ce projet, qui a fait l'objet d'une enquête ethnographique étalée sur 3 années (menée par Gérald Côté), mobilise intensément le numérique, tant en ce qui concerne la production artistique que la collecte et l'analyse des données ethnographiques. La question de la diffusion (artistique et scientifique), sur support numérique, est donc au cœur de la démarche finale du projet.
