In total, 18% of Canadians live in rural locations but by proportion have fewer healthcare providers compared with urban settings. Relying on a recently completed documentary analysis of published reports and grey literature on rural and remote nursing practice from Canada and around the world, we recognize that recruitment and retention will be a recurring issue. However, a variety of programs and initiatives have been developed to address this age-old problem. A discussion is provided about educational opportunities, financial incentives and enhanced infrastructure that have been developed to address recruitment and retention challenges. Ongoing evaluations of each of these areas are necessary but require cooperation across provincial and national settings. NURSING RESEARCH
Population growth into wildland-urban interface areas and wildland fires continue to threaten peo... more Population growth into wildland-urban interface areas and wildland fires continue to threaten people and property across Canada. This article focuses on the promotion of healing of children affected by wildfires based on results from our mixed methods study outlined in detail previously (Townshend et al., 2015). A brief review of the literature on children and their responses to natural disasters and to wildfires is followed by key findings from our research. School counselling strategies are outlined that can be implemented school wide (i.e., universal programs, support groups, or in the classroom) or through individual or group counselling.

They provide dramatic examples of the general increase in the number and intensity of wildfires specifically and natural disasters in general. It is prudent, therefore, to learn as much as we can from those who have experienced this event in order to improve our understanding and responses to such disasters.
