However, the change seems to focus on the activation of parallel information systems, remote from the original proposal of Civic Journalism. The purpose of this paper is to recover the meaning and the original proposals of this current, distinguishing it from functional uses that Internet provides to the media today. At the same time, investigates the model at theoretical and methodological level, rescuing the few cases performed in the country.

Therefore, there are increasing efforts to include students’ use of social media outside the classroom into university learning practices. However, there is still very little innovative application of mobile technology and its social networks in Spanish universities. In this article we explore Spanish university students’ perceptions of the use of social networks for educational purposes in the classroom. We found students to have an ambivalent perception as they are both critical and approving of using mobile devices in university teaching. We present data from the research project “Media competencies of citizens in emerging digital media in university environments” funded by the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness of Spain. The study is based on 897 questionnaires given to Spanish university students studying various degrees, as well...

This presentation analyses the Peruvian educational context and explores pre-service teachers’ knowledge and beliefs on media education. A survey with an ad-hoc questionnaire (N=501) was applied to find what they think of media education; its relevance; how is being taught; if they feel competent to teach about media and to integrate ICT into their pedagogical practices. The results confirm the importance of working media education with pre-service teachers, involving their subjectivity and their own ideas.

This essay reviews their foundation and recent theoretical development in Peru. The three fundamental contributions of edu-communication are as follows: recognizing inter-subjectivity as being a critical element for understanding the interactions between individuals and media, the attention assigned to cultural communicative practices and political dimensions, and its focus on the individual rather than on the technological device, deviating from the more instrumental theoretical perspectives. Keywords: Edu-communication; mEdia Education; Latin amErica; PEru.

As spending on technological infrastructure in the region increases exponentially for educational purposes, and with national curriculums beginning to implement media related skills, this book makes a timely contribution to new debates surrounding the significance of media literacy as a citizen’s right. Taking both a topical and country-based approach, authors from across Latin America present a comprehensive perspective of the region and address issues such as the political and social contexts in which media education is based, the current state of educational policies with respect to media, organizations and experiences that promote media education.
