The list was created manually through a multi-step process that involved scanning the database of an online dictionary to identify Bulgarian words that had the same or similar forms in Turkish. For each cognate word identified, its Bulgarian and Turkish forms and English meanings were recorded, and their accuracy was checked through additional sources and expert consultation. The final list of cognate words includes only those confirmed based on linguistic criteria and expert judgement. The use of cognate words in language teaching methods such as total physical response and teaching proficiency through reading and storytelling can enhance the effectiveness of these methods by helping students understand and remember new vocabulary and building their confidence in language learning. Additionally, this study highlights the potential of cognate awareness to promote peace in the world by emphasizing the commonalities among languages and cultures. By recognizing the abundance of cognates across different languages, we can reinforce the idea that we are all part of the same human family and share a common linguistic heritage. Moreover, the study demonstrates how a new and innovative multilingual education can be achieved through cognates, showing that language education does not necessarily have to be limited to bilingual instruction. The use of cognates as a tool for vocabulary acquisition and cross-linguistic awareness can open up opportunities for multilingualism and facilitate communication across linguistic and cultural boundaries. Future research could explore the use of cognate words in other language teaching contexts and investigate the potential benefits and limitations of using cognates in language learning.

However, this also poses a challenge in terms of detecting whether content is generated by a human or AI. Some concerns about academic integrity have been raised recently regarding ChatGPT. Another issue is whether we really need to reveal the creator(s) of the texts. This paper presents and discusses various tools and techniques that can be used to detect the source. The key focus is on the tools and strategies that can detect AI-generated content, such as copyleaks, Turnitin, metadata analysis, and stylometric analysis. The limitations of these tools are also discussed, including the possibility of manipulated metadata and the reliance on machine learning algorithms. The paper concludes that although there are limitations to these tools, they have important implications in various fields, including education, social media, journalism, and e-commerce. The paper provides a list of tools for AI detection, suggesting that this is an active and growing field of research. I discuss issues about academic integrity, whether AIgenerated content is good or bad, and philosophically how we can deal with the emerging and disruptive technologies of the future.

Also, language learner autonomy is related to the use of technology. Thus, this study was conducted in a TELP (tertiary level intensive English program) to investigate students' attitudes towards English and technology, their autonomy levels, and the relationship between two constructs. Having a quantitative approach, two scales were used to gather data, English and Technology Attitudes Scale (ETAS) by Kearney et al. (2020) and Autonomy Perception Scale by Demirtaş (2010). The data from the scales was analysed using IBM SPSS Statistical Package 22.0. The findings revealed that students mostly had very positive attitudes towards English and technology, and male students achieved significantly higher results in confidence in English and technology than female students. In addition, the students were not found to be effectively autonomous. Furthermore, there was a significant and positive relationship between autonomy and attitudes towards English and technology. It can be concluded that autonomy improves using technology to learn English, and students who use technology to learn English become more autonomous. Teachers are responsible for guiding their students in this process.

Turkey has given importance to foreign language learning for years. Nevertheless, it has been an unresolved problem for Turkish people. The purpose of the present study is to determine why people fail to learn foreign languages in Turkey and the psychological reasons behind it by focussing on perception, foreign language anxiety and learned helplessness. The participants were 100 volunteer students (56 female, 44 male) who were selected randomly from different faculties and departments at Bursa Uludag University. The data were collected from a questionnaire, which consisted of five main sections to identify participants ' background, perception of foreign language learning, level of foreign language anxiety, and level of learned helplessness. Both quantitative and qualitative data were collected. The data were analysed in relation to the research questions that guided the study. The results indicated that the participants' perceptions of foreign language learning were positive owing to past positive experiences, but their level of foreign language anxiety was high due to lack of practice in language skills in the past; and their level of learned helples sness was low because of the positive perceptions they possessed. In addition, the findings suggested that the four language skills should be taken into consideration when the contents of foreign language lessons at schools and foreign language courses at universities are prepared and determined.

Exam-based approach as summative assessment type and task-based approach as formative assessment type were compared in terms of their advantages and disadvantages. Findings indicate that the majority of the students are not satisfied with the summative assessment system. Participants believe that the formative evaluation approach is more appropriate for them. The results propose that the conventional approach, which is based on an exam-focused system in the English Language Teaching Department, should be changed in order to enhance future English teachers' creative skills as well as their personal and professional development as far as possible.

The main discussion was that educators and educational practices are not in complete harmony with the recent products of technology or with the needs, interests, and habits of the learners. The current work proposed Second Life (SL) as a useful model to focus on and investigate in order to derive some theoretical and practical guidelines and conclusions that will be consistent with all philosophies, applications, stakeholders, instruments, and conditions in educational settings in the current age of technology and in the future. The present study concluded that the administrative side of education has fallen far behind the progress in technology, and thus remains quite traditional and static, which creates a paradoxical situation suggesting that the teaching part has lost its power and efficiency, while the learning part continues to be innovative and creative.

Participants were 90 last year students who were enrolled in the English Language Teaching department at Uludag University, Turkey. Data were collected by means of a questionnaire which contained the inventory of programme courses, each of which was rated by the students regarding three criteria: the contribution of the given course(s) to (1) the " personal " development of the students, the contribution of the given course(s) to (2) the " professional " development of the students, and (3) whether the students think that " the course(s) provided them with theoretical and practical knowledge applicable during their active teaching life ". The participants were also asked to rate whether the course contents or course lecturers/instructors contributed more to their development. Additionally, student opinions about their education, the courses and the lecturers/instructors were gathered by means of an interview form. Results suggested that the latest English Language Teacher Training Programme (ELTTP) is not the exact source of knowledge and skills that will meet the needs and interests of the teacher trainees. The findings propose that programmes should be structured in such a way that they not only meet the needs of the students and society but also provide practical and beneficial contents to the individuals.

The study aims at displaying a picture of the virtual environments and engagements that trigger intercultural communication. The study explores the differences in the pragmatic systems and linguistic tendencies of Eastern and Western cultures within the scope of the ‘high-context’ and ‘low-context’ framework proposed by Hall (1976), and the impact of online communication on these cultures. The study also discusses the pedagogical possibilities that the digital world offers in support of foreign language learning and teaching, in the light of innovative educational philosophies and approaches to foreign language education. The paper concludes that there is a basic need for societies to adopt a postmodern view in order to improve global tolerance and communication.

The participants were 74 teachers/trainees who were attending their last year in the Faculty of Education at Uludag University or graduates of the ELTTP from nine different universities in Turkey. The data were collected by a Likert scale questionnaire by which teacher trainees were asked to rate each course that fell under the specific group of educational or technical courses that they attended during their education ; and by interviews through which participants were asked to evaluate to what degree the technical courses contributed to their ICT-informed personal and professional development, and whether they felt ready to employ ICT in their classes as teachers. Results revealed that neither the educational nor the technical courses supported the ICT knowledge and skills of the participants at a satisfactory level, suggesting that the pedagogical knowledge that teacher trainees receive during their education is not in parallel with the technical knowledge that in fact should facilitate the implementation of pedagogical skills in the current age of technology. The present study speculated that the insufficient technical knowledge of the field and underdeveloped technical skills result in evasion of technology use and innovation in education. The study ended with suggestions related to teacher training programs and to the philosophies and approaches to English Language Teaching education.

The list contains 2411 English words that are either cognates or false cognates in Turkish. It was revealed that there are at least 1287 cognates, excluding all proper nouns of people, places, and things;and1124 false cognates, 96 of which share at least one sense of meaning in each language, and thus are partial false cognates. The total number of English–Turkish cog-nates and false cognates suggests that cognate status between the two languages is around 3%. For cognates, the rate is 1.6%, and for false cognates the rate is 1.2%.The current database of English–Turkish cognates and false cognates can be used to prepare reading texts that contain words from the list presented here, and to investigate how they affect reading comprehension, guessing from context, and language learning or processing of a language issues. It can be also used as a resource for researchers investigating the bilinguals of English and Turkish, and learners who study Turkish and/or English as a second or foreign language. The list provides a useful basis for further research into the lexical, linguistic, and psychological issues.

Educational institutions have started to use some online communication platforms such as Skype TM while teaching a second language. This research examines the effect of Skype TM on foreign language learners' speaking anxiety levels and tries to find out the differences in foreign language speaking anxiety levels between the traditional speaking lesson and the Skype TM Conference Call lesson. Twenty-one B1-B2 level adult English language learners participated in this study and a true experimental research design was used. The data were analyzed by paired samples t-test analysis of pre-and post-tests of participants. The results indicated that Skype TM had an impact on foreign language learners' speaking anxiety because it reduced the anxiety levels of learners in the experimental group.

The understanding of digitalised and technology utilised education, which is the current trend of our age, is highlighted and some computer-mediated artefacts such as the so called modular object-oriented dynamic learning environment (MOODLE), the online virtual reality chatting game Second Life, and some others are introduced in a unified connection to show how they can be practically integrated in education, and how they can foster foreign language learning and practice, and intercultural communication. It is emphasised that the current situation of the physical conditions, and also the needs, interests and abilities of the new age learners should be considered more carefully to give education a correct direction in the future.

There have been conducted some studies considering the effect of different techniques on vocabulary retention. However, these studies are mostly limited not to integrate skill-based activities to language teaching techniques for effective vocabulary retention. Based on this gap, the present study aimed to discover the differences among three vocabulary learning and teaching techniques integrated with skill-based activities (reading only, pictured reading with writing, and video watching with speaking) for vocabulary retention. Preexperimental research was carried out, and the treatment based on two children's books lasted 10 weeks in total. The results of the data analysis showed there was a significant difference between reading with pictures combined with a writing activity and the other two techniques in terms of vocabulary retention. The target vocabulary from pictured reading and writing was retained more than the other two techniques, and the least effective one was found as video watching. The detailed results were discussed.

This confusion in the learning process stems from the inadequacy of the English lexicon. The study investigated the translation skills of Turkish EFL learners concerning vocabulary related to family and relationships in the language education curriculum, and compared the accuracy and clarity of learner outputs with machine translation outputs. Additionally, the participants were interviewed about the lexical gap and its affects, if any, on their motivation. The participants were 52 beginner-level learners of English (12 male and 40 female) whose ages ranged between 18 and 55. Results revealed that the texts produced by group 1, mostly with the help of MT, were lexically stable and poorer in content and density, but semantically quite confusing for average Turkish learners of English. The texts produced by group 2, mostly by manual explanation and correction of the literal vocabulary, were lexically richer in content and density, and relatively detailed. It was also observed that the translation outputs of group 3 were similar to those of group 1, showing an inclination to use online and android translational tools, which was confirmed afterwards in interviews. The study concluded that the lexical gap in the English lexicon related to the family and relationships especially, but also to other cultural domains, might create serious confusion and gaps in the minds of beginner FL learners that should be approached with extra consideration during the development of learning materials and implementation of educational sessions, which in turn might contribute positively to the motivation of the learners.

The educational settings in most parts of the world are still predominantly authoritative and encourage students to memorise rather than practice, despite the theories and findings which strongly stress the importance of learning by doing. The principles of self-directed and lifelong learning necessitates taking into account the individual initiative, differences, interests, and needs; considering the multiple intelligences as well as respecting students as individuals. The works published in the present issue of JFLET are fruits of the principles stated hereby. The published works stand as good examples for what students can do once they are provided with the opportunities that scholars have. We are trying to apply the following approach: " Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime. " The synergy is growing and we have everything to feel highly optimistic for the future. In the current issue, we have six research papers, 2 book reviews, and six educational materials (ebooks)-all produced by bachelor's and master's students.

Although the issue has been investigated by many researchers, it remains unclear how to decrease the speaking anxiety, and there is no study on the impact of the Plotagon, which is an interactive digital storytelling application that allows its users to create avatars, choose among scenes and shoot a film by recording their voices, on student motivation and speaking anxiety. The present article examines whether implementing Plotagon affects speaking anxiety and student motivation. 103 high school students studying in a large school in Turkey were chosen via purposive sampling, and concurrent mixed-methods research was conducted to achieve a better understanding of the target phenomenon. The quantitative data were analyzed via SPSS, and the content analysis of the qualitative data was realized via MAXQDA. Results show that implementing Plotagon in speaking classes decreased the level of speaking anxiety and motivated the students in the speaking activities by providing avatars and preparation time, contextualizing speaking, making students content creators, and allowing self-correction. The study has significant pedagogical implications for teachers who aspire to decrease speaking anxiety and motivate their students in speaking classes.
