Juan Agustín Ceán Bermúdez (1749-1829) fue el auténtico pionero en los estudios histórico-artísti... more Juan Agustín Ceán Bermúdez (1749-1829) fue el auténtico pionero en los estudios histórico-artísticos en España. Él puso las bases de la investigación sobre la pintura, la escultura, el grabado, la arquitectura y la arqueología, con obras como el Diccionario histórico de los más ilustres profesores de las bellas artes en España (1800), Noticias de los arquitectos y arquitectura de España (1829) o el Sumario de las Antigüedades romanas que hay en España (1832). En este volumen se editan y estudian unos textos sobre estos mismos temas pero en un formato más breve, que el autor escribió entre 1812 y 1822. Varios aparecieron en la prensa de la época, otros quedaron manuscritos y fueron recogidos por distintos estudiosos decimonónicos, mientras algunos más son inéditos y se publican aquí por primera vez. Se confeccionaron durante unos años de gran conflictividad política, que abarcan el final de la guerra de la Independencia, la recuperación del poder absoluto por parte de Fernando VII y el Trienio constitucional, un periodo que también significó un gran cambio en la valoración de las artes y el modo de escribir sobre ellas, y en el que se produjeron acontecimientos tan significativos como la inauguración del Museo del Prado. En ellos estuvo presente Ceán, y sus vivencias y escritos son especialmente significativos de toda una época de cambio en los hábitos culturales de nuestro país.

güedad grecolatina. Cayo Plinio el Viejo (23/34-79 d.C.) com-
puso su texto enciclopédico para describir los fenómenos de
la naturaleza, tal y como los entendían los eruditos del siglo I
d.C. Que se haya conservado en su integridad a pesar del tiempo trans-
currido, es elocuente de su trascendencia a lo largo de los siglos.
La obra también es de vital importancia para la historia de las artes,
pues ofrece un amplio corolario del arte griego y del coleccionismo ro-
mano. Plinio vivió en una época en la que las obras griegas de los siglos
V y IV a.C. ya eran consideradas clásicas y su acaparamiento se había
convertido en un motivo de prestigio para los gobernantes romanos.
De este modo, en la Historia Natural no solo se ofrecen datos esen-
ciales sobre los más importantes artistas helenos, de Fidias a Lisipo,
de Zeuxis a Apeles, sino que el relato del aprecio de sus obras durante
las siguientes centurias, nos describe cómo el arte pasó de ser una ce-
lebración de la divinidad a convertirse en objeto estético y motivo de
especulación teórica y económica.
La presente edición ofrece una nueva y completa traducción al caste-
llano de los textos de Plinio referentes a las artes. Además, cuenta con
una cuidada edición científica que lo convierte en un proyecto inédito
en nuestra lengua. La traducción directa del latín se completa con un
buen número de notas explicativas. Además, un extenso prólogo es-
tudia una serie de aspectos que ayudan al lector a comprender el con-
texto de su creación: la biografía del autor, el objetivo de la obra o su
influencia en los siglos posteriores. La edición está ilustrada con una
serie de grabados antiguos que, de forma también visual, manifiestan
el sostenido interés que el estudio de la Antigüedad y los escritos de
Plinio, han suscitado desde el Renacimiento.

De ahí que surgieran una serie de iniciativas alrededor de la Real Academia de San Fernando para que España lograr contar con maestros competentes en este arte. Este volumen aúna el trabajo de varios especialistas que estudian el fenómeno del grabado durante los siglos XVIII y XIX, desde un punto de vista múltiple e interdisciplinar, y donde tienen cabida la historiografía del grabado, los grabadores, las colecciones y los coleccionistas de estampas, y su uso en la reproducción y difusión de repertorios científicos artísticos.

Juan Agustín Ceán Bermúdez (1749-1829) fue pionero a la hora de aplicar al estudio de las bellas ... more Juan Agustín Ceán Bermúdez (1749-1829) fue pionero a la hora de aplicar al estudio de las bellas artes los nuevos criterios críticos que estaban comenzando a desarrollar las ciencias históricas durante la Ilustración, fundamentalmente a través del cotejo de los archivos y los fondos documentales. Así, desplegó una enorme capacidad de trabajo y discernimiento para abordar una temática extensísima, desde la arqueología a la pintura y la escultura, desde la historia de la arquitectura hasta la primera monografía escrita sobre Murillo, o el primer texto crítico sobre la pintura de Francisco de Goya. De ahí que su figura sea fundamental para entender el nacimiento de la historiografía artística en nuestro país, pues cualquier estudio en estas disciplinas todavía se inicia acudiendo a unos textos que, tantos años después, siguen resultando fundamentales.
Ligado al Ceán Bermúdez historiador, está su pasión como coleccionista de libros, estampas y dibujos, pues en sus escritos hizo patente que componía sus textos con la ayuda de los elementos visuales de su colección. Esta incluía dibujos y estampas de artistas como Francisco de Goya, Durero, Jacques Callot, Van Dyck, Rembrandt o Ribera entre muchos otros.
En los trabajos del presente volumen, dirigido por David García López y Elena M.ª Santiago Páez, se reúnen las últimas aportaciones de un reconocido grupo de especialistas, que muestran un panorama completo y renovado de su vida, su obra y su legado.

En este artículo se estudia su intervención en numerosas iniciativas de gran importancia en la época. Desde su actividad como redactor de textos para la Colección Litográfica de los cuadros del Rey de España, los catálogos de pintura y escultura del Museo del Prado o su labor como crítico artístico en diferentes exposiciones. También se describe una numerosa documentación inédita sobre sus relaciones con varios artistas.

Tras el trau-ma de la Guerra de la Independencia, el autor lorquino entró de lleno en la política y la literatura durante el Trienio Liberal y, a lo largo de la Década Ominosa y la posterior implantación del sistema liberal, trabó relación con una gran parte de los personajes pre-ponderantes del momento. Especialmente interesante para lograr un fresco del periodo es la lectura de sus escritos autobiográficos, todavía inéditos en gran parte y que, junto a su copiosa correspondencia, ofrecen un panorama privilegiado de unos años de grandes cambios sociales y políticos.

En primer lugar, el escenario urbano, que servirá para introducir en el mapa ciudadano la nueva vida cultural y artística, imagen de la reciente realidad burguesa, así como de las profundas diferencias sociales. Por otro lado, el Parlamento se consagró como el nuevo gran escenario de la confrontación política que, en muchos casos, se trasladó a la ciudadanía a través de la prensa y la caricatura política. Por medio de los periódicos y revistas satíricas, pero también gracias a las novelas o el teatro, los literatos formaron, en muchos casos, una vanguardia de la reivindicación social.
En este sentido, personajes como Benito Pérez Galdós, adquirieron un protagonismo formidable. El autor canario asumió el nuevo rol del intelectual comprometido políticamente que, de la misma forma que reclama reformas políticas y sociales, aconseja a los artistas plasmar la nueva realidad social que se desarrolla a su alrededor. Las artes plásticas expusieron estas nuevas iconografías y alimentaron nuevos debates sobre si los formatos académicos o la gradación de los géneros, heredados durante siglos, eran ya válidos o si, como ocurría con la política, habían sido borrados para siempre.

En 2021 se cumple el segundo centenario de la muerte
de José Vargas Ponce (Cádiz, 1760- Madrid, 1821), oficial de
la Real Armada, erudito, poeta, pedagogo, dramaturgo
e historiador. Su Discurso histórico sobre el principio y
progresos del grabado, escrito con ocasión de su ingreso
en la Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando
en 1790, está considerado uno de los primeros textos
sobre la historia del grabado en España. Este congreso
estudiará el fenómeno del grabado en el siglo XVIII y
principios del XIX, desde un punto de vista múltiple e
interdisciplinar, y donde tengan cabida la historiografía
del grabado, los grabadores, las colecciones y los
coleccionistas de estampas, y su uso en la reproducción

En 2021 se cumplen doscientos años de la muerte de
José Vargas Ponce (Cádiz, 1760- Madrid, 1821). Es
una excelente oportunidad para estudiar y homenajear a este erudito literato, que destacó en su época
por la variedad y compromiso de sus estudios y
escritos. Vinculado profesionalmente a la Armada
española, desde pronto participó en proyectos de
envergadura para la ciencia española, como el Atlas
marítimo de España de Vicente Tofiño, y propuso la
realización de la Historia de la Marina española, que
solo se llevó a cabo más tarde. Por su parte, Sempere
y Guarinos lo señalaba tempranamente como un
preciado autor del reinado de Carlos III.
Perteneció a las instituciones más importantes de su
tiempo, a las Reales Academias Española, de San
Fernando, de la Historia –que dirigió en dos ocasiones--, así como a la Real Sociedad Económica Matritense de Amigos del País, por citar solo las más
señeras. Fue amigo de notables intelectuales y
políticos de la época, como Jovellanos, Martín
Fernández de Navarrete, Ceán Bermúdez y otros.
Además de como poeta y autor teatral, sobre todo
destacó por sus estudios históricos, especialmente en
lo que a la historia de la Marina española se refiere,
pero también compuso importantes textos sobre la
educación e incluso sobre la historia de la tauromaquia. Su gran preocupación por los estudios históricos propició que señalara la suprema importancia de los archivos, promoviendo leyes para su protección
mientras ejerció como diputado en las Cortes de
1814 y 1820.
