Given the extremely limited number and scope of existing critical approaches to the text, my reading is oriented by a reparative strategy that aims, first and foremost, to remedy its precarious status as an archival object. I describe the novel's inchoate and cluttered collection of references, images, and storylines as a countercultural scrapbook of queer feeling, ruled by an antiquarian sensibility, whose structures of cohesion belong less to the realm of formal aesthetics than to the sphere of homophilic affective epistemology. Further, I chart Nova Safo's intersecting gestures of transitive embodiment-transnational, transgender, and transracial-by discussing the novel's mournful evocation of three recently departed icons of fin-de-siècle literary culture:

This paper focuses in particular on what I claim is the relationship between Vila Moura’s creation and female-gendered configurations of perversion and creativity in the Portuguese Modernist canon, such as Orpheu’s Violante de Cysneiros, the "americana fulva" of Mário de Sá-Carneiro’s Confissão de Lúcio, and José de Almada Negreiros’s A Engomadeira. I argue that a mapping of this relationship allows, among other goals, for a reassessment (in terms akin to those of Vincent Sherry’s recent study, Modernism and the Reinvention of Decadence) of the commonplace assertion distancing the aesthetics and politics of decadentism from the form and content of the Modernist rupture in the Portuguese context.
Gilberto Freyre's doctrine of Lusotropicalism, arguably the most influential of twentieth-century... more Gilberto Freyre's doctrine of Lusotropicalism, arguably the most influential of twentieth-century discourses legitimizing the survival of the Portuguese empire, was rooted to a significant degree in a foundational fantasy of erotic encounter between white explorers and Asian or African women. In this fantasy, regularly reiterated in Freyre's writings, the figure of Camões came to play an increasingly prominent role. The "Isle of Love" episode of The Lusiads may be read as an implicit antecedent of Freyre's insistence on amorous underpinnings of the Lusotropical continuum. The narrative sequence of cantos nine and ten, in which sexual coupling between Gama's sailors and the nymphs inhabiting the island is followed by a collective marriage ceremony (and culminates in a prophecy of Portuguese imperial greatness) is shown to reverberate in the unresolved contradiction of Freyre's argument, with its simultaneous endorsement of the colonial contract viewed as a monogamous conjugal union and as polygamous multiplication of procreative opportunity.

Interdisciplinary in nature and scope, Critical Heritage Studies is a vibrant field of research. In all its conceptual, methodological and analytical diversity, mobilizing distinct disciplines and promoting their fruitful dialogue, Critical Heritage Studies can be particularly relevant to the study of the living cultural heritages of the communities and landscapes that were influenced by the Portuguese diasporas through time. This special issue aims to gather studies—originating in diverse disciplinary domains, and potentially fostering interdisciplinary cross-fertilizations—that deal with the multifaceted nature of this topic and discuss “heritage” and “influence” as critical cultural and political arguments and practices, and as historical manifestations entailing different perspectives, motivations and consequences, formed in colonial and postcolonial situations, imagining the past, the present and the future.
The themes this special issue intends to foster include the following:
• The history of heritage politics and policies in the Portuguese speaking-world • Colonial and postcolonial heritage(s) and legacies: Pasts in the present • Language and heritage: past, present, future • The cultures of heritage: the role of humanities and social sciences • Heritage, development and sustainability • Diasporic heritage(s) • Heritage and sustainable tourism • Dominant and alternative pedagogies of heritage
