Amerindian Socio-Cosmologies Between the Andes, Amazonia and Mesoamérica. Toward an anthropological understanding of the Isthmo-Colombian Area, 2020

The case of the Chibchan groups of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, in northern Colombia seems to be interesting since they were one of the first groups that enlightened the work of Gerardo Reichel Dolmatoff, way before his famous work with Desana people. The groups that live in the Sierra Nevada help us to rethink about the highlands/lowlands division, being groups that are geographically isolated from the Andes and the Amazonia, but that present interesting connections with both.
This chapter offers a contribution to the anthropology of the Circum–Caribbean area concerning the I´ku people, one of the four groups of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta. As in the other groups of the Sierra Nevada, the I´ku have a ritual process that we have commonly mistranslated as “pagamentos”. By seeing this ritual, the idea of the “pagamentos” as being based on the duty of “paying for a debt” is tensioned. It will be shown that the ritual implies the alteration fo the i´ku body by receiving or enhancing specific skills with the mediation of the ritual specialist or mamu. Such alteration embodies the creation and renewal of the relationship between the I´ku people and the other beings that inhabit the cosmos, especially those who are placed at higher levels in the hierarchy because they are the creator-owners of everything, which are addressed by the I´ku people as mothers and fathers of life.

colindante, incluindo o Caribe Colomiano.

Analyzing the concepts of ánugwe (vitality) and zasari/gun ́gawun (“pagamenos” or offerings), the main elements that constitute the i'ku person were identified, highlighting the role played by ritual specialists (the mamu) in this process, as well as the transcendence of the bond/relationship with the land/territory, and the importance of the relationship of reciprocity that must be maintained with other beings that inhabit the cosmos: human and nonhuman. It was also demonstrated that the construction of the i'ku person is transcended by the fact that different dimensions of his world appear as manifestations of the same vital principle, allowing relationships of continuity to be created between levels as diverse as the cosmos, land/territory, ceremonial houses and the body.
