Magazines are increasingly online and virtual and produce less material due to the different ongo... more Magazines are increasingly online and virtual and produce less material due to the different ongoing trends within the Portuguese magazine industry. Combining contributions from Organisational Communication Studies and the concept of virtual organisations with Magazine Studies, it is possible to inquire: how does the virtualisation of media organisations interfere with magazine production, circulation, and diffusion? The answer primarily refers to an increase of magazine virtualisation. Then, it points to a diversity of magazine trends: availability of press in digital editions, emergence of digital-native magazines, intensification of transmedia dynamics along with the development of digital technologies, or availability of websites of press-editions-based publications. Taking from international contexts and specificities of the national one, magazines, their virtualisation, and more wide-ranging magazine phenomena are under discussion in this essay, as well as challenges referring to current and future times.

Making use of the social- semiotic analysis and the Critical Discourse Analysis, some aspects were discovered through the selected posts: dramatization, spectacularisation, erroneity, and dehumanisation, arising discourses of politicization, de-legitimation, unbelief, and social and political risk.

The video of the medical doctor Stella Immanuel, who claims to have found a potential cure for the COVID-19 disease in some studies using hydroxychloroquine, has caught the at- tention of many for its polemic statements. This article offers a comparison between two different approaches that two informative platforms display: one of them is a journalistic platform – 'Observador' –, whereas the other is a non- journalistic platform – 'Notícias Viriato' – that can be classified as an alternative platform. The main goal of this work was analysing what is conveyed by the discourse related to each article, once both constitute transmission means of information, using the Critical Discourse Analysis. The conclusions reveal that each article conveys a distinctive discourse in what comes to the use of hydroxychloroquine and the perception of the shared video on Instagram by influent people, who saw it removed shortly after.

The ongoing Coronavirus pandemic has led to the implementation of measures turned to the virtualisation of the organisations, mostly following the imposed homeworking duty, for an extended period. Such settinghas strengthened to those which have been developing its activity in a non-presential way, that is,virtually, as well as those which were facing a total or partial virtualisation. Considering that communication is fundamental to the course of any organisation (Ruão, 2016), this essay approachesthe internal communication. Without misleading this dimension of the communication and theorganisational virtualisation, it is aimed to point out some challenges in this way.By the analysis of four case studies conducted inEurope, the authors of this work have reached that thosechallenges are mainly related to theefficient management of the communicational dynamics of the organisations, the improvement of their channels and easing of the feedback shared by the people who collaborate to the organisation, and an increase humanisation of the organisational activityitself. In the end, it is aimed to make the organisations’ environment more harmonious and healthier, especially when thinking of non-physical contexts, like those potentialized by the pandemic.

Looking into the Portuguese landscape, in times of an increasing acquisition of smartphones (Rocha, 2022), more people consuming news on Instagram (Cardoso et al., 2021), and the using of this specific social media also rises (We Are Social, 2022), it seems strategic an investment on them by the journalistic media. Comparing posts to newspapers and magazines’ cover headlines, two post were selected to understand its semiotic and discursive potential, and to answer the question: which meanings and discourses does (cyber)journalism produces on Instagram with its posts?

Women’s Health and Men’s Health magazines: two transmedia phenomena
More than a past crossmedia vision, media contemporaneity is dominated by transmedia dynamics [1]. Texts after texts, offline and online, the online about the offline and vice-versa, about this topic and about that topic. Texts here consist of communicative events, raised by semiotic resources, gifted with cohesion and coherence, which are realised, and aggregate several modes of meaning production, such as the combination of a photo with written text, and the suggested gaze of the person represented by the photo and salience [2]. Their inherent intertextuality and interdiscursivity matters, once texts within contexts – such as the social, cultural, or political ones – produce discourses, wide sets of communicative events that represent something and enhance other texts as well [3]. Media enterprises are taking the most of this textual patchwork, and, therefore, attempting to empower it, especially through their covers. Drawing on the Portuguese background, and the national editions of the magazines Women’s Health and Men’s Health, this seminar intends to approach these and other interconnected topics, raising other questions, and debating their possible repercussions.
The arising of the Internet, Internet of Things, digital algorithmisation, social platformisation, and sophistication of Artificial Intelligence have been cooperating in such mission [4]. As many engaging in the digitalisation of work [5], media organisations are then becoming increasingly virtual, both in their production and their diffusion of content. Among many trends, some keep both press and digital editions, some other quit their activity due to this new framework, or even other ones emerge as new digital-native media. The field of lifestyle magazines within the Portuguese panorama appears to be interested in these logics.
Before addressing them specifically, as a starting point for transmedia dynamics, the covers deserve their highlight. They correspond to the first pages shown to those of which the magazine boosts interactions with. Aiming to sum up the magazine’s interior, a cover is highly projected and designed, with a proper rhetoric, following a certain identity, as well as by their headlines, and involving semiotic resources to make such goals feasible [6]. Their editorial tradition enhances their awareness, since “a front cover reflects not only the editorial stance of the magazine and its identity but also (seeks to accommodate to) the profile of the targeted audience” [7]. Thus, magazine covers may impact on meaning and discourse production, and even turn them into media events themselves [8]. Celebrities are engaged in this genre, making themselves an essential matter for lifestyle magazines [9]. The cases under analysis in this seminar tend to feature celebrities on their covers, which motivates media and social attention.
Lifestyle magazines aim to offer ways of living life. More precisely, in what concerns to express the self, interact with other people, and enjoy different life experiences [10]. These are associated to topics such as health, sport, clothing, make-up, shopping, sex, or relationships. They tend to convey certain representations of gender, of a specific man or woman, as socially desirable ones, in a heterosexualised dichotomy. Especifically, Women’s Health aims at “editorial topics related to health, sport, food, fashion, beauty, and many others that are of interest to women in general”, those who are interested in “acquiring and/or keeping healthy life habits” by providing “technical, informative and scientific support”. Demographically targeted at men, Men’s Health, its “goal” is to promote “health, sport, food, fashion, self-care, relationships”, etc., regarding “the modern man”, as well as “healthy lifestyle habits”, with “technical, informative, and scientific support” [11].
Some other magazines producing counter-discourses have been emerging, but they are not established the way other publications do within the magazine industry, an expression widely present on the literature. Magazines are associated to a past of engagement on industrial and standardising logics, globalisation of trends and representations, as well as glocalisation, link to journalism, and entertainment, tabloidization, marketisation, magazinifcation, and digitalisation [12].
In recent years, Women’s Health and Men’s Health have been making the most of transmedia dynamics. Building on the notion that transmedia enhance new texts, stories, communicative events about a first initial text [13], necessarily transmediated towards the interactions empowered [14], the magazines aim at the digital logics to get media and social attention, profits from circulation, and attract advertisers. The case of Helena Coelho, Portuguese digital influencer that has featured Women’s Health edition of July/August 2020 exemplifies so. The edition was sold out and prompted the release of two more editions between July and August 2020, but also some approaches by the media and activity by social media users. A radio programme of humourist nature has approached the topic, highlighting many statements made by the influencer. For example, those on her own body transformation and appearance, and how she felt about the experience of featuring the cover, suggesting the objectification and self-objectification of her body, under the eye of meaning and discourse production [15]. Briefly, the akin of the body to an object, including by the person, in this case, herself. Another important aspect related to lifestyle magazines is the concept of infotainment, i.e., information of journalistic and non-journalistic nature produced about them, including celebrities in an attempt to entertain and feed the entertainment industry [16], not forgetting the increased traffic on social media as well, at a national and global levels.
Two cases related to Men’s Health can be also mentioned. One of them is the cover that has featured Ricardo Castro, Portuguese actor, and the other is the one that includes Fernando Rocha, Portuguese humourist, and TV host. The respective editions are of September 2018 and September 2022. The presentation of Ribeiro and Cabecinhas (2023) focus on those covers. Among many findings from a Social Semiotics’ approach towards them, it highlights the ‘weight loss’ and ‘body change’, a representation of ‘healthy’ and ‘in shape’ bodies, of a “NEW” body referring also to a ‘new man’, the imperative mood implied on some sentences, and the framed use of time to point to a time that has past, different from what is scripted on the covers – people’s bodies changes –, and to the present that is ‘healthier’ than the past. Using a Critical Discourse Analysis framework towards articles of journalistic and non-journalistic nature about the covers, the research work within the presentation points out to aspects such as: the Ricardo Castro’s aesthetic surgery that the actor has undergone, and is not mentioned on the cover; fans call-out to ‘photo manipulation’; the challenging of other celebrities to go for the same loss of weigh; the release of a book on the months of the body physical ‘transformation’ of Ricardo Castro; or a more frequent use of social media by Fernando Rocha, and articles made of his reactions to fans and other entities. Strategic articulation of stereotypes, medicalisation and demedicalisation, or even objectification and self-objectification are some of the issues raised by the presentation for a critical reflection [17].
By the exposition of these issues, it is expected to discuss the current state magazine industry, in light of the Portuguese panorama, accomplishing the goal of a critical reflection regarding meaning and discourse production by these magazines upon their transmedia dynamics. Overall, Portugal’s media field is characterised by its fragility. Some authors mention a scenario of “crisis” [18]. Its decreasing of revenues from circulation and advertising, lack of readership, struggles on applying digital strategies, or shortage of financing sources are putting it at risk. However, some other trends have been contradicting this: increase of online visits of some magazines’ websites, new sources of funding, such as crowdfunding, emergence of alternative magazines, new magazinification trends, such as the release of press editions, or even the maintenance of magazines related to socially influencing companies, such as Continente Magazine, that belongs to the hypermarket Continente [19]. Within this more positive arrangement, transmedia dynamics in attracting media and social attention appear as a strategy used by magazines to ensure their space and their sustainability. Thus, Women’s Health and Men’s Health represent two cases of how transmedia dynamics and the digital are changing them, including in challenges related to body representations, media and digital literacy, or even media and Internet regulation [20].
