Th... more In this paper, I write history of heritage conservation of Trowulan site from 1963 until 2010. There are three groups who have interest on that site, i.e., government, academics, and people. This paper explores what motivations have different interest groups had in Trowulan as one of Indonesia’s neglected heritage site and how have that actors sought to define, preserve, and take advantage of the site and for what purpose. The period of this research remark how the government installed, exercised, and used their power there. I make three highlights of the events during that period. First, the establishment of the Archaeological Office in Trowulan and changing of power around 1966. It indicates the beginning of intervention of state there, after it absence during Old Order era. Second, the period of greater institutionalization and discourse of tourism in Trowulan. Third, the period after Indonesia’s reformation and it discontents in that site. I take the Majapahit Information Center’s dispute on 2009 as a case.
The members of SEANNET were highlighting the flaws in the current practice of urban studies or ur... more The members of SEANNET were highlighting the flaws in the current practice of urban studies or urban history that was comfortable with the city as its unit of entry. By working on South East Asian cities, they were simultaneously engaged in knowledge production as well as methodological innovation. This is the same challenge that stands before researchers from the Humanities across Borders project as well. It also dovetails with the broader goal of HaB – to reflect on current educational practice and envision pedagogical and methodological interventions to revitalize the current model of the humanities.
