In this article, we reflect on the presence of amateur gestures in his filmography based on three axes of analysis: 1) the subversion of family iconographies; 2) amateurism as an aesthetic and political force, and 3) the travelogue and the world’s cinematic geography. This film analysis approach also encompasses the complexities and the various meanings that amateur gestures can assume. Kodak company was central in promoting such imagery through advertisements and intense marketing campaigns, establishing modes of production and consumption of the photographic image. Anchored in the concept of apparatus, the book makes explicit the many ways the company portrayed the tourist photographer without abandoning references from different sources and contemporary visual culture.

Published in Rio de Janeiro, through its pages we can witness the growing interest in American cinema, the modernization of the exhibition circuit and the arrival of the equipment for the amateur public: the projectors and cameras launched by Pathe and Kodak in the early 1920s. Through the analysis of the film columns "Um pouco de tecnica" and "O desenvolvimento do cinema de amadores em nosso pais", we intend to identify the effects of this new cultural setting, the modernization process taking place in Rio de Janeiro and the reception to amateur equipment, a symbol of modernity connected to an international commercial circuit focused on domestic cinematography.
