This article analyzes the dynamics of SSTANs through the case of an environmental campaign against Brazilian hydropower projects proposed in the Peruvian Amazon. It demonstrates how Southern actors are mobilizing against new and emerging patterns of South–South cooperation, which, despite occurring on unfamiliar institutional terrain, reproduces familiar asymmetrical power relations and socioenvironmental burdens.

It discusses the inadequacy of the nature-society dichotomy and argues for epistemological parity, as well as for the recovery of indigenous knowledge systems. Looking at indigenous knowledge uncovers many ways to consider nature and contributes to recast global environmental studies in the Anthropocene.

Abstract This contribution analyses social-environmental international governance and policy affecting bi-national arrangements for energy production among Amazonian countries. South-South transnational advocacy networks (SSTANs) targeting emerging states, Southern consortia and private sector, as well as social movements and other supporting institutions, differ from conventional transnational advocacy networks that are heavily reliant on Northern actors and targets. Social innovation and new arrangements occur particularly in terms of the strategies and arguments employed by the SSTANs. This article applies a threefold action pattern to analyze the dynamics of SSTANs, which includes information politics, leverage politics and symbolic information. Data informing this analysis was collected through interviews with key actors, stakeholder and policy mapping, and archive research. We use this model to assess a civil society campaign against proposed Brazilian hydropower projects in the Peruvian and Bolivian Amazon, showing how Southern actors mobilize against South-South development cooperation, which reproduces familiar asymmetrical power relations and socio-environmental burdens.

This is due to the deforestation of the Atlantic Forest, which leads to soil erosion and. This combined with an increase frequency and quantity of rainfall related to climate change leads to repeated landslides, causing destruction of homes and even deaths.
This scenario led to the removal of families from the slum to affordable housing. Unoccupied areas needed a new use to avoid illegal occupation. The city hall and the community, with the support of ProAdapta, started a process of participatory discussion on the design of an Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) measure for the site. The EbA methodology was chosen because it includes the restoration of native forests with a focus on climate change adaptation and, at the same time, on the well-being and resilience of local communities. Through dynamics and the use of inclusive and non-sexist language, it was possible to raise awareness about gender equity.

The one occurred in the Amazon in 2010 was more severe and more spatially extensive than the one registered in 2005. This last drought triggered loss of some Amazon forests, which in turn, shall accelerate climate change. However, regarding scientific4 publication, the projected future scenarios of climate change and vulnerability prepared by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in 2007 for the Northwest of the Amazon, have been generic and simplified because they were adapted to the requirements of their technique. These models have normally been developed with regional amplitude, that lacks to see the details of the natural, agriculture and urban landscape, and that can only be looked and distinguished by expert and landscape´s local residents. For instance, in the Amazon, the models have plots measured by 250 square km2, which miss significant diversity of the landscape.

O Setor Elétrico Brasileiro e a Sustentabilidade no Século 21 – Oportunidades e Desafios, 2012

Avoided Deforestation Prospects for Mitigating Climate Change, 2010
Avoided deforestation can be characterized as the use of financial incentives to reduce rates of ... more Avoided deforestation can be characterized as the use of financial incentives to reduce rates of deforestation and forest degradation, with much of the focus on forests in tropical countries.
While avoided deforestation, as a policy issue, is not new, the current debate in academic and policy circles on including it in future climate change mitigation strategies such as the Clean Development Mechanism is gathering pace – and this debate is only likely to intensify as negotiations continue over what should be included in the successor agreement to the Kyoto Protocol, which is set to expire in 2012.
Up until now, however, the debate in terms of the scientific and economic implications of avoided deforestation has not been brought together. This book aims to bring together important research findings in the area along with their policy implications, whilst linking avoided deforestation to political economy as well as to the latest developments in environmental and natural resource economics.
