Taxodione was considered leishmanicidal with an IC50 value of 1.46 µM (0.46 mg/L) against Leishmania donovani and also exhibited antifungal and antimicrobial activities. Ferruginol displayed the greatest activity [24-h IC50 of 4.5 µM (1.29 mg/L)] against the fish pathogenic bacteria Streptococcus iniae. The crude extract fraction that contained the isolated compounds 7-O-acetylhorminone and horminone showed stronger in vitro antibacterial activity (1.3 mg/L for Staphylococcus aureus and 1.1 mg/L for methicillin-resistant S. aureus) than the compounds tested alone. 7-O-Acetylhorminone and horminone exhibited a synergistic effect against methicillin-resistant S. aureus (FIC of 0.2), and horminone had better activity against S. aureus with respect to other compounds isolated from S. deserta roots. The present study investigated whether osmotic stress induced by the exposure of peppermint (Ment... more The present study investigated whether osmotic stress induced by the exposure of peppermint (Mentha x piperita L.) to moderate and severe stress for short periods of time changes the plant's physiological parameters, leaf anatomy and ultrastructure and essential oil. Plants were exposed to two levels of polyethyleneglycol (50 g L(-1) and 100 g L(-1) of PEG) in a hydroponic experiment. The plants exposed to 50 g L(-1) maintained metabolic functions similar to those of the control group (0 g L(-1)) without changes in gas exchange or structural characteristics. The increase in antioxidant enzyme activity reduced the presence of free radicals and protected membranes, including chloroplasts and mitochondria. In contrast, the osmotic stress caused by 100 g L(-1) of PEG inhibited leaf gas exchange, reduced the essential oil content and changed the oil composition, including a decrease in menthone and an increase in menthofuran. ABSTRACT The present study aimed to test the hypothesis that different levels of the availability... more ABSTRACT The present study aimed to test the hypothesis that different levels of the availability of mineral nutrients from Hoagland and Arnon's (1950) nutrient solution no. 2 affect the photosynthesis, ionic concentration and biomass production in seedlings of Annona emarginata (Schltdl.) H. Rainer variety ‘terra-fria’. Seedlings were grown in a hydroponic setting with 100% ionic strength and with ionic strength reduced to 75%, 50%, and 25%. Ionic strengths intermediate resulted in higher rates of carbon net assimilation and plants grown under these conditions increased biomass as well ionic concentrations of calcium, magnesium and sulphur. The ‘terra-fria’ plants with nutrient solutions of 50% and 75% ionic strength exhibited higher ionic concentrations, instantaneous carboxylation efficiency and biomass production. It can be concluded that the ‘terra-fria’ does not require the maximum mineral nutrients availability from Hoagland and Arnon's (1950) to achieve high primary productivity and intermediate ionic strengths can even reduce the time required for rootstock formation.
