Im Zuge der seit 1910 im Heraion von Samos durchgeführten Grabungen kam auch eine große Menge seh... more Im Zuge der seit 1910 im Heraion von Samos durchgeführten Grabungen kam auch eine große Menge sehr qualitätvoller attischer Fragmente der schwarzfigurigen Technik ans Licht, die der Zeitspanne zwischen 600 und 470 angehört; im letzten Viertel des 6. Jh.s nimmt die Zahl der Fragmente allerdings spürbar ab, was wohl auf die inneren Unruhen nach dem Sturz des Polykrates zurückzuführen ist. Die Untersuchung der hier vertretenen Maler auf die Verbreitung ihrer Gesamtceuvres hin ergab, daß immer wieder dieselben Orte zu nennen waren, nämlich etwa Huelva und Massalia im Westen, Vulci, Tarquinia mit Gravisca, Cerveteri und Tarant sowie weitere Orte in Großgriechenland und Sizilien für Italien, Tocra und Kyrene in Nordafrika, Naukratis in Ägypten, Delos, Rhodos und Zypern, Neapolis (Kavalla) und Thasos in der nördlichen Ägäis, Phokaia und Smyrna im nördlichen und Milet im südlichen Ionien, Tell Sukas und Susa im vorderen Orient sowie Berezan und Pantikapeion an der Schwarzmeerküste; auf dem griechischen Festiand dominieren Athen mit der Akropolis und der Agora, Korinth und Eleusis sowie die vorgelagerte Insel Agina. Im wesentlichen läßt sich eine Zweiteilung der Verbreitung konstatieren; in der ersten Hälfte des 6. Jh.s gingen die Gefäße gen Osten, in der zweiten Hälfte nach Westen, vor allem nach Italien. Im Anschluß an dieses Ergebnis stellt sich nun die Frage, wer und auf welchen Wegen die attischen Gefäße o o ' o nach Samos transportierte, der im folgenden nachgegangen werden soll.

Der vorliegende Band ist der Vorstellung der panathenäischen Pre-isamphoren und der rotfigurigen ... more Der vorliegende Band ist der Vorstellung der panathenäischen Pre-isamphoren und der rotfigurigen Gefäße gewidmet, die in Athen zwischen dem späten 6. und dem späten 4. Jh. v. Chr. hergestellt wurden; sie wurden im Heraion von Samos als Votive aufgestellt, später abgeräumt und meist als Füllmaterial für neue Bauprojekte wiederverwendet. Ein Katalog bietet grundlegende Informationen zu den einzelnen Stücken, die durch Fotos und Profilzeichnungen illustriert werden. Das Material ist von großer Bedeutung, es bietet zwei unterschiedliche Materialgruppen, die im Hinblick auf Male-rwerkstätten, aber auch im Hinblick auf die Motivation der Käufer und die Weihepraxis unerwartete und spannende Ergebnisse ge-liefert hat. Die Fragmente panathenäischer Preisamphoren stam-men fast ausschließlich aus dem frühen 5. Jh. v. Chr. Einzigartig sind innerhalb dieser Gruppe die mindestens 17 panathenäischen Preisamphoren des sog. Malers der samischen Preisamphoren: Sie sind nicht nur die ersten Weihgaben dieser Art im Heraheilig-tum, sie präsentieren mit ihren verschiedenen Rückseitenbildern auch einen in diesem Umfang einzigartigen Querschnitt durch die Wettbewerbe, die bei den Panathenäen, dem wichtigsten Fest der Athener, abgehalten wurden; für jeden dieser Wettbewerbe wurde ein Satz an Amphoren vergeben, die den eigentlichen Preis, das Olivenöl aus den heiligen Hainen der Athena enthielten. In diesen Gefäßen manifestierte sich das Ansehen und der Wohlstand des Siegers, beide wollte der wahrscheinlich samische Stifter, mit sein-en wohl auf dem Markt erworbenen Votiven demonstrieren; mit den Gefäßen eines Malers, der für uns namenlos, aber wohl wenig später unter dem modernen Namen Berliner Maler ein Großer seiner Zunft werden sollte, und der etwa zwei Jahrzehnte später noch einmal einen Auftrag für solche Gefäße übernehmen sollte. Die rotfiguren Gefäße zeichnen sich in der ersten Phase des Imports durch besonders gute Qualität aus; darunter sind vor allem Gefäße für das Symposion, Gefäße von den führenden Malern wie Euphronios oder Duris. Nach einem Hiat zwischen etwa 440 und 410 wird Durchschnittsware im Heiligtum aufgestellt, darunter viele Kratere für die männlichen Teilnehmer an den Symposien im Heiligtum, aber auch Salbgefäße, die sich eng mit der beschenk-ten Gottheit verbinden lassen. Die Lücke im Befund, die zeitlich mit den politischen Auseinandersetzungen zwischen Samos und Athen zusammenfällt, lässt sich am ehesten als " kultureller Protest " der Samier gegen die Produkte der Hegemonialmacht Athen erklären. Die Funde erlauben uns also einen Blick in das Heiligtum klassischer Zeit und machen erneut deutlich, welch wichtigen Stel-lenwert das Heraion von Samos auf der Karte des östlichen Mittel-meergebiets einnahm.
This talk given at the AIAC 2018 presented three networks of traders who transported vases potte... more This talk given at the AIAC 2018 presented three networks of traders who transported vases potted and painted by members of the Leagros Group from Athens to Vulci. These networks reveal a direct link between traders and painters, including direct access of the traders involved to this workshop. The networks also allow to attribute vases by using the respective trademarks, thus providing an approach beyond style.
