Many of the motifs referred to in nineteenth-century fantastic tales and novels are already to be found in medieval miracula and mirabilia: strange natural phenomena, werewolves and revenants, the battle between good and evil. Obvious parallels can also be found on the level of structural configuration, such as the reproduction of certain narrative patterns in the French novella.1 While the fantastic has been more or less defined as a distinctive genre, its main medieval precursor, the merveilleux chretien, is a more heterogeneous phenomenon. It seems appropriate to consider it as a flexible set of patterns and themes, appearing in different sorts of texts and in different pragmatic contexts, such as hagiographies, sermons and miracle collections. Miracles can be functionalized as an argument for Christian belief, as a proof of the sanctity and the virtue of a person or a relic, or as a didactic means in order to impress and to convince an audience of a theological message. Thus, miracle stories do not constitute a genre, but rather a set of textual elements,

This holds true for Verga’s own play (1884) and even more for Pietro Mascagni’s famous opera (1890). In 1990, Francis Ford Coppola makes extensive use of the opera in the ending of The Godfather Part III, in order to provide Michael Corleone with the qualities of a tragical hero, qualities he actually does not have, given his brutal character in The Godfather Part I and II. Bymaking the opera a mise en abyme of the Godfather Part III-plot, Michael Corleone’s individual guilt is reduced to the effect of the archaic rules of rural Sicily, the land of his father and grandfather. In fact, he himself becomes a victim of a culture he wants to overcome. This strategy constrains Coppola to foreground, through the opera, the archaic world o...

Imaginationen der Angst. Das christliche Wunderbare und das Phantastische, Boston/Berlin: de Gruyter, 2018

Premodern literary texts lack such targeted evocations of horror. To find them, one must turn instead to Christian exempla, which seek to frighten readers in teaching them a lesson. Imaginations of Fear discusses the hitherto unappreciated significance of the “merveilleux chrétien” for the fantastic genre from its beginnings through the 20th century.

Ed. Steen Bille Jørgensen & Axel Rüth, Aarhus: Aarhus University Press, 2007

With focus on the "specific" in literary forms, the work can be seen as a challenge which concerns not only theory-formation but also reading and interpretation. The contents range from historic-systematic considerations over the concept of the work's theoretic legitimacy, to concrete readings of motives in precise works. The two main sections ("The Paradigm of the Work" and "Revisions and Interpretations") present the work concept as a boundary-concept. On the one hand it is made the object of theoretic and meta-theoretic considerations which, inter alia, concerns "the document and the work", "the poetic genre", or a concept such as "work-effect". On the other hand, the work through exemplary readings is made into an object for reflection over the text theory's interface to philosophy and psychology, together with modern problematics like the subject (biography and text), the picture and text (and the reverse), and the psychological-spiritual in the literary-phenomenological perspective. Through the original contributions in this publication, one is invited to an elucidation of the status of literature and the significance of literature studies today.
