Although historical sources regarding the actual battle are scarce, this event obtained significant importance in the context of German nation building, especially in the 19th century. The “Battle of the Teutoburg Forest” and its protagonist, “Herman the German”, soon were understood as an myth of “German origin”. On occasion of its 2000th anniversary, this myth became a problematic matter of public discourse: is this myth still of importance for the democratic state of Germany today, entangled in European affiliations? Should we commemorate a battle and the nationalist symbolism inherited with it? And if so, how can such an anniversary be realised? Based on theoretical groundwork provided by the concept of “Erinnerungskultur” (“memorial culture”), the author examines with an ethnographic approach several activities and actors in connection with the 2000th anniversary of the “Battle of the Teutoburg Forest”. Among others, museum exhibitions, touristic events and material products of a multimedia “history market” are analysed in this book with regard to their “memorial symbolism”. Hereby, this exemplary study addresses how history, even controversial events such as battles and nationalist origins of myth, is re-narrated in today’s every day live.
