From the beginning of the coinage, in the 2nd half of the 4th century B.C., until the end of it, in the mid-2nd century B.C., the main emissions consisted of bronze denominations and silver triobols of reduced Aeginetan weight, that were later also to be identified with the Late Hellenistic Symmachic standard. However, during the period of the great wars against the Macedonian kingdom in the 2nd half of the 3rd century B.C., new emissions of the more widespread Attic weight in silver and gold were minted. These emissions represent both the financial growth that the League had reached in its apogee and the extended nature of these specific conflicts, but also the immense costs of these wars, that finally brought the depletion of the League's resources.

Communities and population groups do not decide collectively on their identity, nor do they unanimously choose which part of their traditions better support and shape their sense of belonging and identification. Usually, the elites are in a position to formulate, transform, and even create, myths and traditions advocating specific perceptions of community and society. On a regional level and beyond, powerful players attempted to interact with local communities in order to impose their versions of local and wider identities. Reversely, within individual communities, tendencies of affiliation to more powerful political authorities developed, not always with success. Modern scholars of memory and identity often come across a wide range of possible reactions to the dissemination of specific messages and standard sets of indicia of co-belonging. A typology of reactions to super-imposed collective identities, however, is a near-impossible task. Nonetheless, a study of relevant reactions at the local and the regional level can shed some light on aspects of the use of memory as a political instrument. Those aspects can be determined by examining how Greek communities used to function and adapt to a changing actual and conceptual environment. Our panel brings together scholars researching different themes, regions, periods, and subjects. A wide range of cases from many different locales – the Peloponnese, north-western Greece, Athens, Italy, and Asia Minor – will be discussed, tackling issues of memory, identity, and interstate relations. Our interdisciplinary panel will offer fresh insight into various processes of identity formation, in and beyond the polis. All in all, we will investigate the range of potential strategies and pathways that different Greek communities opted for when conversing with powerful local or regional authorities.

These features seem to have been translated in different periods to a fluctuation in the sense of belonging, at the regional level of the Arcadian ethnos, the intermediate of the smaller ethne within Arcadia, and the formation of the relatively numerous and small poleis in the area. The aim of this paper is to present the evolution of these local and regional aspects of identity formation in Arcadia, from the Protogeometric to the Early Archaic period. To this end, a specific focus on the earliest available written sources is considered necessary, combined with thorough research of the available archaeological finds in the area, sanctuaries, cemeteries, and settlements. The written sources that provide us with the earliest recorded mythological tradition can be used, in connection with the archaeological evidence, as indications of the genesis of community identity. These are, apart from Homer and Hesiod, various references in the archaic poetry, as well as later preserved mythological references to the specific area in sources of the 5th century BC, both complete and fragmentary. The problems with later mythological references in the sources referring to the upper past such as Pausanias, apart from them being exhaustively studied, is that they tend to represent a more centralized and processed perspective, and reflect traditions forged through the experiences of the Classical period. The connection of evidence through space provides a better understanding of the patterns emerging and evolving through time and enables us to pose new questions on our material. This can produce new perspectives, in order to draw the broader picture in areas traditionally decentralized, as is the case of Early Arcadia. In a wider context, it is possible to investigate connections on a regional level and examine the existence of cultural or other networks between Arcadia and the rest of the Peloponnese in this transitional period.
