A Byzantine source (12th century) mentions the same practice in several temples of Constantinople, whereby, however, the laity entered the altar spaces during Mass. The author of this source is the great canonist Patriarch Theodore Valsamon, who tried to prohibit the practice, but the laity refused, claiming that this was an ancient practice that should not be banned. The questions that arise from these sources are very closely related to both the liturgy and practical actions in the altar and the layout of the altar space, for which special research is needed.

as well as the characteristic features of buildings erected over their tombs. Special attention is

tactile contact, the last being of “supreme worth” to the worshipers. Given are examples of various
architectural solutions, the aim of which is to provide Christians with access to the martyrs’ relics
on the one hand, and on the other – to protect the last from negligent worshipers.
