It is a relatively wide and typologically diversified set, collected in archaeological contexts related with the construction and remodelling of the theatre. These containers testify, in Olisipo, the importation of alimentary products from several places of the empire from the middle of the 2nd century B.C. to the third quarter of the 1st century A.D., representing important indicators for the study of the commercial dynamics of Olisipo.
The work is divided in three different parts. The first constitutes basically a contextualization of the themes related with the geographical implantation, historical evolution of the city to the moment of the construction of the building, and archaeological interventions that have been developed along the years. The subject of the importance of amphoral studies in the perception of the economy in the ancient world is also approached.
In the second part the stratigraphic contexts are analyzed, looking for to interpret the diachronic and synchronic meaning and its relationship with the construction and remodelling of the scenic space; the amphoral types that compose the sample are presented, followed by the characterization of the distinct identified fabrics and associated producing areas.
In the third part takes place the quantitative and qualitative analysis of the set, being exposed the possible readings concerning the consumption habits and importation rhythms in Olisipo to the time

Abstract The production and commercialization of wine in Roman Lusitania remains a poorly known and underdeveloped subject in archaeological studies, mainly due to the scarcity of data. For this reason, its role in the regional economy is usually neglected. Through the analysis and systematization of old and new data concerning the amphorae that transported Lusitanian wine, it is sought to prove that wine production in the Tagus and Sado river valleys played a significant role in the regional economy, particularly between the 2nd and the first half of the 3rd century AD.

Abstract Although usually considered the most important city of Lusitania - after Augusta Emerita - and the main maritime harbour of the whole Atlantic peninsular façade, there remains a generalized absence of studies that highlight the role that Olisipo played in the most western of the Roman provinces’ economy and commercial relations. This work aims to address that absence, by focusing on the research on Olisipo, located at the Tagus estuary, during the period encompassing the Republic and the Principate, and based on the study of amphorae. The dataset resulting from the analysis of the amphorae from Lisbon discloses the existence of a vast network of commercial relations with the diverse areas of the Mediterranean throughout all of the considered chronology, thus revealing a cosmopolitan city, with an active and central role in the complex commercial exchanges of the West of Iberian Peninsula with the rest of the Roman Empire. These results underline Olisipo’s importance as a trading post in the Atlantic coast during the Roman period, a role that has been recognized long ago, allowing to draw in a more accurate way how the city’s economic history was shaped.
Keywords Atlantic façade; Lusitania; Roman Republic/Principate; amphorae; Roman economy; consumption patterns.

Some of these materials come from from the ancient funerary periphery, possibly from the necropolis located next to Olispo’s “Via Norte”, where the systematic dismantling of funerary monuments is well documented, dating from the late 3rd century AD.
Abstract: The production of amphorae with fully Roman morphologic characteristics in the western Peninsula started in the third quarter of the 1st c. B.C., that is, in the final mo-ments of the Republic. However, despite the important devel-opment of its study over the last fifteen years, the knowledge currently held on containers produced between that period and the third quarter of the 1st c. A.D. is still quite limited. This study aims to present a significant set of new data from the Roman city of Olisipo, which represents, for the time be-ing, the main consumption centre of these amphoric produc-tions. Framed in the current state of research and in the main issues underlying this theme, we seek to establish the possi-ble readings about the production and circulation chronology of these amphorae, as well as their meaning in the context of the consumption of foodstuffs transported in amphoric con-tainers in the Roman city of Lisbon

These were intended for packaging and commercialising the agricultural surpluses produced in the region, coexisting with imports from the south, mainly from the Straits of Gibraltar, which were used as prototypes. The vitality of this industry was maintained and even increased during the Late Iron Age, coinciding with the expansion of rural settlements in the interior of the Lisbon Peninsula. This is reflected in the appearance of new amphorae types, currently in course of characterisation, and their absolute predominance in consumption contexts. On the other hand, there was a reduction in the number of imported containers, which has led to the suggestion of a change in economic orientation. However, these are not totally absent, as demonstrated by the discovery of some amphorae of Turdetanian origin. The aim of this paper is to examine this phenomenon in greater depth by studying a group of amphorae, both locally produced and imported, from various excavations carried out on the slopes of the hill of Castelo de São Jorge in Lisbon. In addition to the morphotypological study and the macroscopic characterisation of the ceramic pastes, a petrographic study of thin sections was carried out, as well as chemical (XRF) and mineralogical (XRD) analyses on a selection of 14 samples. The results obtained allow further progress in the geographical attribution of these productions and bring to light new details about the technological processes involved in their production.

a análise

In the third part takes place the quantitative and qualitative analysis of the set, being exposed the possible readings concerning the consumption habits and importation rhythms in Olisipo to the time
detailed knowledge about this type of container and the existing information is scattered. With this study, we present an updated
account of Gaulish amphorae in Lusitania, after carrying out a systematic and exhaustive analysis of the published specimens
and assemblages, and including also a significant number of unpublished sets. We then proceed to a brief characterization of
the types recognized in the territory and a synopsis about their investigation, before posing a set of five interrelated questions
that structure our approach: what? (which types and which products were identified), where? (where were they documented), how
much and when? (the proportions of these imports and their fluctuations over time) and how? (geography of their distribution in
Lusitania and the trade dynamics).
Abstract
The production and commercialization of wine in Roman
Lusitania remains a poorly known and underdeveloped
subject in archaeological studies, mainly due to the
scarcity of data. For this reason, its role in the regional
economy is usually neglected. Through the analysis
and systematization of old and new data concerning the
amphorae that transported Lusitanian wine, it is sought
to prove that wine production in the Tagus and Sado river
valleys played a significant role in the regional economy,
particularly between the 2nd and the first half of the 3rd
century AD.

Abstract
Although usually considered the most important city of Lusitania - after Augusta Emerita - and the main maritime
harbour of the whole Atlantic peninsular façade, there remains a generalized absence of studies that highlight the role that
Olisipo played in the most western of the Roman provinces’ economy and commercial relations. This work aims to address that
absence, by focusing on the research on Olisipo, located at the Tagus estuary, during the period encompassing the Republic
and the Principate, and based on the study of amphorae.
The dataset resulting from the analysis of the amphorae from Lisbon discloses the existence of a vast network of commercial
relations with the diverse areas of the Mediterranean throughout all of the considered chronology, thus revealing a cosmopolitan city, with an active and central role in the complex commercial exchanges of the West of Iberian Peninsula with the rest of
the Roman Empire. These results underline Olisipo’s importance as a trading post in the Atlantic coast during the Roman period, a role that has been recognized long ago, allowing to draw in a more accurate way how the city’s economic history was
shaped.
