Giuseppe Fornari's groundbreaking inquiry shows that Friedrich Nietzsche's neglected importance a... more Giuseppe Fornari's groundbreaking inquiry shows that Friedrich Nietzsche's neglected importance as a religious thinker and his "untimeliness" place him at the forefront of modern thought. Capable of exploiting his own failures as a cognitive tool to discover what other philosophers never wanted to see, Nietzsche ultimately drove himself to mental collapse. Fornari analyzes the tragic report of Nietzsche's madness and seeks out the cause of this self-destructive destiny, which, he argues, began earlier than his rivalry with the composer and polemicist Richard Wagner, dating back to the premature loss of Nietzsche's father. Dramatic experience enabled Nietzsche to detect a more general tendency of European culture, leading to his archaeological and prophetic discovery of the death of God, which he understood as a primordial assassination from which all humankind took its origin. Fornari concludes that Nietzsche's fatal rebellion against a Christian awareness, which he identified as the greatest threat to his plan, led him to become one and the same not only with Dionysus but also with the crucified Christ. His effort, Fornari argues, was a dramatic way to recognize the silent, inner meaning of Christ's figure, and perhaps to be forgiven

Calogero, with his contradictions and failed ambitions, well represents the depp crisis of identity which strikes the Italian nation and that was connected to a more general crisis both of Italy and Europe between the XIX and the XX century, finding its tragical expression in the two world wars with the kindred phenomenon of totalitarianism. This huge plight was the far consequence of the gradual collapse, in the modern era, of the public mediations (spiritual, political, finally cultural) on which the European society was based. Modern ideologies were the Ersatz of such mediations, finally unable to solve the contradiction between their former universal meaning and the limited and, to some extent, artificial boundaries of the national States. Italy was the perfect victim of this process, as seat of the universal power of the Church that was essential to its cultural identity. Fighting for becoming a European power like the other States, Italy not only lost the II WW, but lost itself. The responsibility of intellectuals like Calogero was not to understand what was really going on, and to become accomplice in destroying the Italian humanistic model of education and culture. A country unable to recover its real historical identity is damned to extinction and this is as much as true for Europe. The Author writes this in the hope to arouse a commitment for inverting this fatal tendency

The essay starts from the problem of the subject/object relation, essential both in philosophy and psychology. The two terms do not exist separate from each other, but for that very reason, they simply cannot be "put together". On the contrary there must be a genetic and productive factor which links them together giving them existence. This factor can be named "mediation", meaning the process or event from which subject and object are generated and that phenomenologically shall conform to the collective participation and absoluteness, not separated by a component of violent imposition. The Author discusses the theories of Freud, Bataille and Girard which offer in different ways important elements to understand the anthropological and historical nature of this event as source of human mediation. These authors, however, remain affected by the typically modern assumption that leads mediation to desiderative factors of the subject or change it to scientific objective factors. The constitutive elements of the problem instead suggest an ectstatic event of collective violence that has made possible the representation of the world of objects, creating the premises for the future development of the subjects. The new proposal for mediation and research, providing significant elements of genetic and historical understanding even of the modern psyche, has assumed for these reasons the name of "ecstatico-objectual theory"
