The central decades of the fourteenth century were of crucial importance for the later cultural evolution of Bulgaria and the whole of Orthodox Slovenia, despite which to date ample and exhaustive studies on the figure of Ivan Aleksandăr are lacking. There is, in effect, a considerable amount of information at disposal, although it is scattered over the literary sources, the colophons of the manuscripts, the epigraphic documentation and also, obviously, the official deeds promulgated by the Emperor. Through the analysis of this varied documentation, this book attempts to reconstruct the figure of the sovereign, the context in which he lived and worked, his greatness and his mistakes a...

This manuscript was given a prominent position in the 19th century editions of the Slavic version of the Gospels, as a witness of the ‘ancient’ redaction. Nevertheless, only in recent times has it become the object of extensive study. In the present paper, the text of P11 is preliminarily contextualized within the Slavic tradition, by use of the corpus of textual nodes, developed at the Münster Institute for New Testament Textual Research (): the analysis shows that the text of this codex has few points of contact with the tradition of the feast (esk) lectionary, while it is very close to the text of the Mstislav Gospel (except for the Mark cycle). From a typological point of view (moderate increasing of particular variants at the expense of the so-called ‘Byzantine text’), P11 places itself between the ‘first redaction’ an...

Taking into account the point of view of textual tradition, the aim of this preliminary study is both to verify the extent to which his quotes come from the traditional Slavic version of the sacred scriptures and to point out the exegetic relevance of any detected variant. Such a task requires a broad comparison with the Greek tradition and will be carried out referring to critical editions as well as to the corpus of textual nodes compiled by the Munster Institute for New Testament Textual Research (cfr. the series Text und Textwert der griechischen Handschriften des Neuen Testaments).

This method is mainly meant as a tool for the grouping of witnesses for the Editio Critica Maior of the Greek New Testament. In this article the author, who has already tested the efficacy of such a method for analysing the Slavic tradition in a number of studies, indicates the guidelines for the forthcoming edition of a slavic corpus, based on the same 467 ‘test passages’.

A series of liturgical proto-byzantine structures – main and secondary altars – from Asia Minor are examined in close connection with the liturgical praxis adopted in those regions (Diego Peirano). Th e structural, documentary and critical features of the Baptistery of Santa Severina (Calabria) are analysed on the grounds of the unpublished reports of Paolo Orsi, a pioneer scholar of Southern Italy from Trento (Tancredi Bella). Th e iconography of a fabric fragment kept in Rome receives a new interpretation, thanks to clarifi cations that also help to clarify the chronology (Silvia Pedone). A conspicuous corpus of mostly unpublished or marginally known fragments of liturgical furnishings from Saint Mary in Torcello, is collected and rigorously analysed for the fi rst time, even in relation to the second presbytery fence, still present in the basilica (Diego Valenti). A reconstructive hypothesis is given for an extensively reworked capital from Grassaga, near San Donà di Piave, closely akin to the aforementioned objects as concern chronology and geographical location (Fabio Coden). Two essays concern a group of erroneously assessed or unpublished materials, stored in the deposit of the National Museum of Ravenna and in which the Eastern sources and the progressively predominant Latin style are intertwined (Paola Novara). Th e problematic ceramic basins embedded in the façade of the church of Madonna della Stra' in Belfi ore, near Verona, are carefully explored in order to fi gure out the contacts between the Byzantine and the Islamic world in the Mediterranean and its consequences on the regions of the Peninsula (Marica Menon). Subsequently, thanks to unpublished documents discovered in the archives of the Frick Collection, the four historiated columns belonging to the ciborium of Saint Mark in Venice, are reexamined with a highly critical approach which will reopen the debate about the controversial chronology of these very elaborated sculptures (Maria Aimé Villano). Two essays deal with an enkolpion from Rorai Piccolo (Pordenone) – likely of Russian origin, but with a clear Byzantine style – and concentrate both on the iconographic quality and the interpretation of the complicated ancient Cyrillic epigraphs, in order to defi nitely dispel any doubt on the workshop responsible for the artefact (Fabio Coden and Alberto Alberti). Th e last essay draws attention to the relationship between the equestrian representation of the Byzantine Emperor and that of certain Knight Saints depicted in some icons of the XIII th century, through an in-depth analysis of several details which have escaped even the most meticulous critical studies so far (Andrea Babuin).

Alberto Alberti, Marcello Garzaniti, The Ivan Alexander Gospel in the Textual Tradition of the Slavic Gospels
In this article, the authors analyze the Slavic text of the Gospels in the light of the most recent developments in Greek New Testament studies. Particularly useful is the work carried out at the Institut für neutestamentliche Forschung (Münster). Based on the identification of a series of ‘Test Passages’ (Teststellen), the Münster volumes offer all the readings of the Greek tradition (except for lectionaries). In this paper, the first 10 chapters of the Gospel of John and the entire text of the synoptic Gospels are analyzed from this point of view, comparing the Greek text with a corpus of 12 Slavic manuscripts. In some instances the text of the Ivan Alexander Gospel reflects the process of harmonization to the Greek ‘Byzantine text’, but in general terms preserves many archaic features, which is quite unusual for a 14th century Gospel. The revision based on Greek manuscripts is also illustrated by readings that are clearly in harmony with particular forms of the Greek text.
