Building upon audiovisual translation and recent Japanese sociolinguistic studies, this article intends to highlight the gap between the non-native actors' language and the actual speech of Japanese speakers, as well as the hypermasculinization of fictional speech aimed at indexing a hard masculinity model through the so-called phenomenon of transduction. By intertwining the analysis of the Japanese male markers in dubbed texts with the phonetic analysis of the original voices and Japanese voice actors, this study testifies to a different orientation in the Japanese dialogues compared to those in English and highlights the exploitation of the speakers' bodies which become themselves vehicles to portray certain ideologies of masculinity. In particular, it reveals a clear polarization between hard and soft masculinity mediated by a set of metapragmatic stereotypes that inherit, in turn, a homonormativity vision which is directly borrowed from the imagery of different gender relationships in Japan.

The volume seeks to fill a gap on the translation of classic texts in AVT research which has tended to focus on contemporary media.
The book features well-known British literary texts but places a special emphasis on adaptations of the works of Jane Austen and William Shakespeare, figures whose afterlives have mirrored each other in the proliferation of film and television adaptations of their work. Chapters analyze myriad modes of AVT, including dubbing, subtitling, SDH, and voice-over, to demonstrate the unique ways in which these modes come together in adaptations of classics and raise questions about censorship, language ideologies, cultural references, translation strategies, humor, and language variation. In focusing on translations across geographic contexts, the book offers a richer picture of the linguistic, cultural, and ideological implications of translating literary classics for the screen and the enduring legacy of these works on a global scale.

The study provides a broad theoretical framework on the basis of the recent Japanese literature on linguistics (nihongogaku) in order to stimulate a double intralingual and interlingual reflection in Italian students. At a didactic level, the contribution underlines the importance of drawing on Japanese literature in order to acquire a shared metalanguage that can stimulate further research and induce teachers to keep up with the most recent outcomes in the field.

Building upon audiovisual translation and recent Japanese sociolinguistic studies, this article intends to highlight the gap that has grown over the years between the non-native actors' language and the real speech of Japanese speakers, as well as the hypermasculinization of fictional speech aimed at indexicalizing an informal, funny and cool male model, through the phenomenon of transduction. In the Japanese audiovisual context, it is possible to trace a sort of linguistic essentialism in both male and female speech, which heavily leans on the so-called body of otherness and which risks reinforcing stereotypes of gender, race and social class. Will this also be the case for this new series?

Contrary to expectations, punctuation has not always been the subject of in-depth investigations in the context of audiovisual translation studies since the phenomenon has often remained linked to idiosyncratic uses that are not always shared or shareable by broadcasters, subtitlers, and clients. As recalled in many recent studies, the rules of punctuation differ considerably from one language to another and the subtitles-for the purposes of fluency and readability-should avoid imitating punctuation practices that do not belong to the target languages. This study shows how subtitling that does not start from the original source texts and that-while respecting the translation practice-refuses to make use of punctuation, assuming that what must be translated is the mere syntactic-semantic content of the texts, cannot be sustainable.

Especially in the presence of new types of non-professional subtitling (NPS) that have found fertile ground on the Internet showing how taxonomies produced by academics cannot always be declined for all spectators. This study introduces the Japanese Film Selection (JFS) project which takes shape in May 2019 within the Takamori Cultural Association. From a quality perspective, the offline activity presented in this study fits into a pro-am logic that is halfway between the altruistic action of fansubbers and the philological rigor towards the source texts typical of genuine subtitles. 1. Nuovi contesti della sottotitolazione pro-am Nell'ambito degli studi di traduzione audiovisiva il dibattito sulla de-finizione della qualità nei sottotitoli interlinguistici è andato ampliandosi negli ultimi anni. Soprattutto in presenza di nuove tipologie di traduzioni non professionali (non-professional subtitling) che hanno trovato terreno fertile in Internet mostrando che non sempre le tassonomie prodotte in ambito accademico possono essere declinate in ambiti specifici di utenza della traduzione. Come suggerisce Orrego-Carmona ([2019]) in un suo studio recente: The notion of quality is defined by the needs and circumstances of the agents who engage with translations: different translation scenarios manifest different implicit and constantly evolving notions of quality depending on the specificities of the given scenario [ivi: 5].

This paper aims to highlight the personality and the role of Lafcadio Hearn (alias Koizumi Yakumo) through its English rewriting of Japanese fantastic tales (kaidanbanashi) from the repertoire of gesaku literature of the modern period. In particular, this paper analyzes the tale Jikininki taken from his collection Kwaidan: Stories and Studies of Strange things (1904) by comparing it with the original prototext Aozukin written by Ueda Akinari and selected from Ugetsu monogatari (1776).
This study focuses on the sociolinguistic emergency of subtitling from Japanese with a particular... more This study focuses on the sociolinguistic emergency of subtitling from Japanese with a particular focus on the analysis of the so-called «neutral» translations within English prosubs of feature films. Since synchronic varieties of languages coexist within a so-called «linguistic continuum» thanks to a relationship of mutual inclusion, this study will focus on the negotiation of linguistic prescriptions produced by the characters on the screen together with the sense of multiple identity and the contextual/situational pressures they convey through their dialogues. At the intralingual level, a special attention will be paid to the analysis of «language shift» and «language mix» phenomena produced within the Japanese original script of the feature film ‘Dear Doctor’.
Studies on gender audiovisual translation highlight the role played by translation intended as a ... more Studies on gender audiovisual translation highlight the role played by translation intended as a crucial instrument for the re-definition of non-compliant identities as well as of the complex task of those who deal with intercultural mediation, with the risk of developing stereotypes that encourage more or less patent forms of social exclusion. Hush! (Hashiguchi Ryōsuke, 2001) is an example thereof, where the intralinguistic level reveals a dialogical subtext which seems to put the heterosexual male characters in contrast with the other gay speakers. Considering the presence of the above-mentioned subtext in the source language, it is possible to state that – also at the interlinguistic level - the official English subtitling of the DVD available on the market features some diagender anomalies that can result both from some typological difficulties in the expression of Japanese, and from any gender assumptions that the subtitlers have unwittingly preserved, necessarily reflecting them in the translation into the target language.

This study presents a preliminary survey carried out on Netflix in 2018 with a special focus on s... more This study presents a preliminary survey carried out on Netflix in 2018 with a special focus on six Japanese TV series subtitled in Italian. The survey has identified some common categories of intercultural impasses and shows how the lack of intercultural cohesion observed in Italian subtitles is primarily due to underestimating both the mono-and micro-cultural elements present in the source texts. The observations produced by this study lead to in-depth reflections on the qualitative characteristics of current Japanese-Italian interlinguistic subtitling. Considering that the skopos of the translations on paid streaming platforms such as Netflix is the ability to meet the requirements of a general audience, one not necessarily familiar with Japanese culture, then high-quality translations together with adequate semantic coherence able to ensure a clear use of the translated texts should always be the prerequisites of any interlinguistic audiovisual subtitling. This is important to prevent intercultural inconsistencies that risk corroborating and validating stereotypes or being denied the pleasure of discovery that underlies the audiovisual experience.

The transfer of a sociocultural universe of a given prototext within a new subtitled context requ... more The transfer of a sociocultural universe of a given prototext within a new subtitled context requires a systemic analysis that takes into consideration not only the needs of the linguistic pair, but also the micro-context and polysemiotic analysis of the audiovisual text. In fact, the observation skills that are intrinsic in this mediation process lead the subtitler to develop a visual ability that allows him/her to extrapolate from the iconic channel useful information for a more precise decoding and recoding of the semantic contents. This study presents the analysis of a small corpus of interlinguistic subtitles for the Japanese movie Sayōnara keikoku (Ōmori Tatsushi, 2013) produced by the students of an advanced training course in audiovisual translation with a special focus on the rendition of diaphasic elements in Italian.
Vi è, nella storia della cultura e della società giapponese, un testimone attendibile e preciso c... more Vi è, nella storia della cultura e della società giapponese, un testimone attendibile e preciso che potrebbe, se metaforicamente interrogato, restituire al suo interlocutore informazioni puntuali sulle vicende del Giappone. Questa memoria storico-culturale del Paese del Sol Levante è il suo sistema di scrittura, uno fra i più complessi al mondo, in cui si riverberano tracce della storica contiguità con la Cina, elementi propriamente autoctoni sviluppatisi nel corso dei secoli e tratti di permeabilità occidentale più recenti. L’articolo che proponiamo rende conto al lettore di questa complessità ed esplora le possibilità di un apprendimento non guidato della grafia del giappo- nese tramite l’uso di programmi reperibili su Internet: la ricerca presentata dall’autore verifica le ricadute dell’uso di software liberi sulla competenza grafica di studenti universitari principianti di giapponese. I risultati, non sempre incoraggianti, svelano i limiti operativi e metodologici di tale apprendimento spontaneo e assumono un non indifferente valore critico nei confronti del ricorso non didatticamente mediato delle tecnologie. Sono suggeriti, per converso, alcuni primi, utili accorgimenti per facilitare l’avvicinamento dei discenti al sistema di scrittura giapponese, aiutando studenti e insegnanti a sviluppare una maggiore coscienza critica nei confronti dell’uso delle tecnologie in questo delicato compito di apprendimento.

Especially in the presence of new types of non-professional subtitling (NPS) that have found fertile ground on the Internet showing how taxonomies produced by academics cannot always be declined for all spectators. This study introduces the Japanese Film Selection (JFS) project which takes shape in May 2019 within the Takamori Cultural Association. From a quality perspective, the offline activity presented in this study fits into a pro-am logic that is halfway between the altruistic action of fansubbers and the philological rigor towards the source texts typical of genuine subtitles. 1. Nuovi contesti della sottotitolazione pro-am Nell'ambito degli studi di traduzione audiovisiva il dibattito sulla de-finizione della qualità nei sottotitoli interlinguistici è andato ampliandosi negli ultimi anni. Soprattutto in presenza di nuove tipologie di traduzioni non professionali (non-professional subtitling) che hanno trovato terreno fertile in Internet mostrando che non sempre le tassonomie prodotte in ambito accademico possono essere declinate in ambiti specifici di utenza della traduzione. Come suggerisce Orrego-Carmona ([2019]) in un suo studio recente: The notion of quality is defined by the needs and circumstances of the agents who engage with translations: different translation scenarios manifest different implicit and constantly evolving notions of quality depending on the specificities of the given scenario [ivi: 5].
Rewriting as a bridge between two worlds: Lafcadio Hearn and the spread of Japanese fantastic tradition. This paper aims to highlight the personality and the role of Lafcadio Hearn (alias Koizumi Yakumo) through its English rewriting of Japanese fantastic tales (kaidanbanashi) from the repertoire of gesaku literature of the modern period. In particular, this paper analyzes the tale Jikininki taken from his collection Kwaidan: Stories and Studies of Strange things (1904) by comparing it with the original prototext Aozukin written by Ueda Akinari and selected from Ugetsu monogatari (1776).
This study focuses on the sociolinguistic emergency of subtitling from Japanese with a particular... more This study focuses on the sociolinguistic emergency of subtitling from Japanese with a particular focus on the analysis of the so-called «neutral» translations within English prosubs of feature films. Since synchronic varieties of languages coexist within a so-called «linguistic continuum» thanks to a relationship of mutual inclusion, this study will focus on the negotiation of linguistic prescriptions produced by the characters on the screen together with the sense of multiple identity and the contextual/situational pressures they convey through their dialogues. At the intralingual level, a special attention will be paid to the analysis of «language shift» and «language mix» phenomena produced within the Japanese original script of the feature film ‘Dear Doctor’.
Studies on gender audiovisual translation highlight the role played by translation intended as a ... more Studies on gender audiovisual translation highlight the role played by translation intended as a crucial instrument for the re-definition of non-compliant identities as well as of the complex task of those who deal with intercultural mediation, with the risk of developing stereotypes that encourage more or less patent forms of social exclusion. Hush! (Hashiguchi Ryōsuke, 2001) is an example thereof, where the intralinguistic level reveals a dialogical subtext which seems to put the heterosexual male characters in contrast with the other gay speakers. Considering the presence of the above-mentioned subtext in the source language, it is possible to state that – also at the interlinguistic level - the official English subtitling of the DVD available on the market features some diagender anomalies that can result both from some typological difficulties in the expression of Japanese, and from any gender assumptions that the subtitlers have unwittingly preserved, necessarily reflecting them in the translation into the target language.

This study focuses on the translation of the genderlect uttered by the transgender protagonist of... more This study focuses on the translation of the genderlect uttered by the transgender protagonist of the Japanese movie Close-Knit directed by Ogigami Naoko (2017) within the context of interlingual subtitling in the Japanese-Italian language pair. According to recent research in the field of AVT, gender translation may disclose important clues about the way identity-related issues are perceived in a source and in a target language. In particular, the rendition of ‘liquid’ genderlects challenges the belief that Japanese society is naturally divided into two sexes/genders and that there are two separate linguistic codes for female and male speakers. By utilizing a constructionist framework that treats gender as a complex and fluid cultural construct, this study intends to stress the importance of disentangling gender norms from dominant heterosexist discourses, and how sociocultural markers of the spoken language need effective transposition in subtitles. Especially, when gender issues emerging from Japanese movies must be translated for non-English speaking target audiences.
This study presents a preliminary survey carried out on Netflix in 2018 with a special focus on s... more This study presents a preliminary survey carried out on Netflix in 2018 with a special focus on six Japanese TV series subtitled in Italian. The survey has identified some common categories of intercultural impasses and shows how the lack of intercultural cohesion observed in Italian subtitles is primarily due to underestimating both the mono-and micro-cultural elements present in the source texts. The observations produced by this study lead to in-depth reflections on the qualitative characteristics of current Japanese-Italian interlinguistic subtitling. Considering that the skopos of the translations on paid streaming platforms such as Netflix is the ability to meet the requirements of a general audience, one not necessarily familiar with Japanese culture, then high-quality translations together with adequate semantic coherence able to ensure a clear use of the translated texts should always be the prerequisites of any interlinguistic audiovisual subtitling. This is important to prevent intercultural inconsistencies that risk corroborating and validating stereotypes or being denied the pleasure of discovery that underlies the audiovisual experience.

The transfer of a sociocultural universe of a given prototext within a new subtitled context requ... more The transfer of a sociocultural universe of a given prototext within a new subtitled context requires a systemic analysis that takes into consideration not only the needs of the linguistic pair, but also the micro-context and polysemiotic analysis of the audiovisual text. In fact, the observation skills that are intrinsic in this mediation process lead the subtitler to develop a visual ability that allows him/her to extrapolate from the iconic channel useful information for a more precise decoding and recoding of the semantic contents. This study presents the analysis of a small corpus of interlinguistic subtitles for the Japanese movie Sayōnara keikoku (Ōmori Tatsushi, 2013) produced by the students of an advanced training course in audiovisual translation with a special focus on the rendition of diaphasic elements in Italian.
Vi è, nella storia della cultura e della società giapponese, un testimone attendibile e preciso c... more Vi è, nella storia della cultura e della società giapponese, un testimone attendibile e preciso che potrebbe, se metaforicamente interrogato, restituire al suo interlocutore informazioni puntuali sulle vicende del Giappone. Questa memoria storico-culturale del Paese del Sol Levante è il suo sistema di scrittura, uno fra i più complessi al mondo, in cui si riverberano tracce della storica contiguità con la Cina, elementi propriamente autoctoni sviluppatisi nel corso dei secoli e tratti di permeabilità occidentale più recenti. L’articolo che proponiamo rende conto al lettore di questa complessità ed esplora le possibilità di un apprendimento non guidato della grafia del giappo- nese tramite l’uso di programmi reperibili su Internet: la ricerca presentata dall’autore verifica le ricadute dell’uso di software liberi sulla competenza grafica di studenti universitari principianti di giapponese. I risultati, non sempre incoraggianti, svelano i limiti operativi e metodologici di tale apprendimento spontaneo e assumono un non indifferente valore critico nei confronti del ricorso non didatticamente mediato delle tecnologie. Sono suggeriti, per converso, alcuni primi, utili accorgimenti per facilitare l’avvicinamento dei discenti al sistema di scrittura giapponese, aiutando studenti e insegnanti a sviluppare una maggiore coscienza critica nei confronti dell’uso delle tecnologie in questo delicato compito di apprendimento.

Se però adottassimo la prospettiva secondo la quale «la World Literature è una scrittura che guadagna in traduzione» (Damrosch, 2003, p. 281), probabilmente risulterebbe più agile com- prendere l’intricato processo che ha portato questo testo a travalicare non solo i confini della sua cultura di origine (ormai poco interessa il vettore geografico della sua divulgazione), ma anche il genere stesso del romanzo.

Il presente volume intende offrire alcuni spunti di riflessione nell’ambito della traduzione audi... more Il presente volume intende offrire alcuni spunti di riflessione nell’ambito della traduzione audiovisiva e nel nuovissimo panorama delle lingue extraeuropee travalicando l’impostazione finora eurocentrica delle tradu- zioni da e verso l’inglese, e presentando casistiche e problematiche di ri- cerca in coppie traduttive per le quali gli studi di audiovisual translation studies appaiono ancora carenti. Come ormai dimostrato dai numerosi festival internazionali, dalle prolifiche piattaforme di video on demand, dalle rassegne in streaming, nonché dalle rinnovate modalità di fruizione dei testi audiovisivi in Internet, sottotitolazione e doppiaggio possono diventare, oltre che occasioni di condivisione interculturale, un efficace strumento per stabilire nuovi canali di comunicazione e inclusività nella società contemporanea.

Oggi, infatti, il corpo docente è sempre più chiamato a rispondere alle esigenze dei discenti attraverso un aggiornamento tecnologico che introduca le risorse online come parte integrante del sillabo di insegnamento delle lingue straniere. Una volta definiti gli obiettivi linguistico-comunicativi da raggiungere, quindi, sarà responsabilità dei singoli docenti operare nel migliore dei modi al fine di “filtrare” il materiale da utilizzare in classe ed introdurlo nel giusto momento dell’apprendimento dei discenti. La selezione dovrà essere volta ad accertare negli apprendenti la presenza di adeguate preconoscenze linguistiche e culturali al fine di non dissipare l’iniziale interesse verso il mezzo e di non ingenerare una ricaduta negativa in termini di motivazione allo studio. Successivamente alle fasi di pianificazione e filtraggio, l’organizzazione dell’intervento pedagogico multimediale attraverso unità didattiche ad hoc si porrà come precondizione essenziale per il successo o meno delle attività. La contemporanea presenza di diversi messaggi linguistici, visivi, acustici e socioculturali, infatti, non potrà essere esaminata simultaneamente, ma necessiterà, invece, di un attento studio del carico cognitivo da parte del docente, nonché di un percorso introduttivo volto all’analisi degli elementi contestuali (situazione, argomento, attori, obiettivi), cotestuali (tipologia di linguaggio) e paratestuali (titoli, sottotitoli, trascrizioni) insiti nei video da trattare. Un’attenzione particolare in questo lavoro è dedicata all’implementazione della didattica multimediale nell’ambito della lingua giapponese. Per lungo tempo, infatti, una certa miopìa pedagogica ha sovente ostacolato l’implementazione dei materiali audiovisivi autentici nell’ambito della didattica di questa lingua. I motivi di questa timidezza tecnologica sono forse da ricercare nella scarsa alfabetizzazione digitale dei docenti ma, soprattutto, nell’obsolescenza delle teorie glottodidattiche di riferimento. Anche agli inizi di questo ventunesimo secolo, infatti, nella produzione di materiale didattico per il giapponese si riscontra l’influenza di un approccio teorico formalista e strutturalista mirante alla riproduzione di una lingua artefatta (sebbene grammaticalmente irreprensibile) caratterizzata da una frequente produzione di modelli orali realizzati ad hoc per l’utenza straniera. L’evoluzione verso una didattica di stampo comunicativista e, negli anni più recenti, verso un’impostazione umanistico-affettiva (mirante a valorizzare le diverse caratteristiche cognitive, nonché le singole esigenze di apprendimento di ogni discente) ha portato, però, il corpo docente a dover ripensare le strategie pedagogiche da implementare in classe. Non a caso, il confronto con un pubblico di apprendenti sempre più aggiornato ed abituato al contatto con testi originali ha posto gli insegnanti nella posizione di non poter più ambire a rappresentare l’unica fonte di conoscenza all’interno dello spazio-classe. Di certo, il contatto con Internet e la creazione di piattaforme di apprendimento multimediali per la lingua giapponese confermano la volontà di voler procedere nel processo di svecchiamento della didattica di questa lingua. Oltre a ciò, la presenza della lingua giapponese sul web rappresenta oggi una realtà difficilmente ignorabile . Per garantire un effettivo rinnovamento didattico, però, sarà necessario intercettare e distinguere ciò che si potrebbe definire una reale volontà “riformatrice” da un pedissequo e, spesso, inutile trasferimento dei contenuti cartacei in formato digitale. Ancora oggi, infatti, da una veloce analisi dell’oralità presente in diversi materiali online per il giapponese non è infrequente imbattersi in dialoghi (spesso prodotti da docenti madrelinguisti) deficitari delle caratteristiche tipiche del parlato originale e, spesso, frutto di un compromesso pedagogico tra oralità ed esigenze della scrittura. I suddetti testi, infatti, sono sovente caratterizzati dall’assenza di rumori di sottofondo, delle strategie di riparazione, da un’estrema aderenza a modelli sintattico-grammaticali tipici dello scritto ed, infine, da scarsi riferimenti al contesto socioculturale giapponese. Sulla scorta delle recenti ricerche nell’ambito della psicologia cognitiva applicata alla glottodidattica e della teoria dell’apprendimento multimediale rintracciabili nelle opere di autori quali Richard Mayer, Allan Paivio e John Sweller, questo studio intende presentare i possibili sbocchi che i video streaming reperibili in Internet possono offrire alla didattica della lingua giapponese. In particolare, si illustrerà come video che non posseggono in origine alcuna finalità pedagogica possano essere didattizzati in modo opportuno sulla base delle esigenze di sillabo del docente, delle necessità di apprendimento dei discenti, nonché della specificità della lingua. Sulla scorta del crescente interesse a livello internazionale di buona parte dei discenti nipponisti per i fenomeni contemporanei della cosiddetta J culture (si veda l’interesse crescente verso i lungometraggi animati, le fiction, i film, i manga, le visual novels di fattura nipponica) si mostrerà come immagini e testi autentici fortemente contestualizzati possano stimolare non solo un input motivazionale adeguato ai fini dell’attività didattica, ma venire altresì utilizzati come veicoli di una lingua che diviene sempre più inseparabile dall’elemento culturale. Oggi, infatti, sarebbe poco praticabile una didattica del giapponese che si sganciasse volontariamente da quei riferimenti storici, geografici, economici e di costume sempre più presenti nella vita del discente medio. Oltre alle suddette questioni di carattere sociolinguistico, sarà altresì necessario sottolineare come, nell’ambito della didattica del giapponese, l’utilizzo di materiale streaming possa garantire il passaggio di un know-how tecnico che tenga conto delle reali esigenze comunicative degli apprendenti. Si pensi, a titolo esemplificativo, all’osservazione dei linguaggi tecnici, alle differenze di genere nel parlato, oppure alle coordinate comportamentali da rispettare nelle interazioni verbali ed extraverbali in giapponese. Attraverso la presentazione di un modulo di unità didattica costruita dall’autore su notiziari televisivi giapponesi e documentari reperibili in Internet, questo studio intende procedere alla formulazione di un’ipotesi didattica da poter implementare nell’ambito di una pedagogıa di classe che possa condurre i discenti alla scoperta della lingua attraverso attività coordinate sì dal docente, ma secondo un’ottica di costruzione delle conoscenze di tipo collaborativo e mai unidirezionale. In particolare, sulla scorta del Quadro comune europeo per le lingue (Q.C.E.R.) il quale introduce tra le proprie direttive lo sviluppo della competenza sociopragmatica ponendo al centro del processo di apprendimento la dimensione sociale ed interazionale, questo studio intende sottolineare la necessità di un percorso formativo interdisciplinare così come proposto nel passato recente da progetti europei quali CLIL-EMILE che si sono proposti di integrare i contenuti strettamente linguistici con altri settori disciplinari in una sorta di ambiente d’apprendimento doppiamente focalizzato. Utilizzando come punto di forza le nuove tecnologie nonché l’impatto che queste hanno prodotto nello stile di vita degli apprendenti, questo studio illustrerà altresì come sia possibile utilizzare i materiali streaming reperibili in rete per veicolare un insegnamento della lingua giapponese declinato anche in altri ambiti del sapere.

In particolare, l’inserimento di prodotti multimediali quali lungometraggi, fiction, clip musicali o notiziari televisivi all’interno dei corsi di lingua attraverso una ponderata programmazione didattica ha sovente spiazzato chi era in evidente deficit tecnologico o chi, invece, era obbligato a dover procedere con sollecitudine nell’insegnamento linguisti- co rispettando sillabi grammatico-centrici e/o poveri di riferimenti socioculturali. Tuttavia, come ricordava in una sua pubblicazione recente Giovanni Bonaiuti (2010), pur rima- nendo nell’ottica di un’accurata programmazione, didattizzazione e organizzazione delle attività di classe, prima o poi sarà necessario confrontarsi con l’audiovisivo. Soprattutto ponendo attenzione a non «svilire» l’intervento multimediale rendendolo solo un simpa- tico diversivo dalla routine delle lezioni di lingua. A conferma di ciò, va ricordato come negli ultimi anni ricerche e teorie sulla didattica multimediale provenienti da vari ambiti disciplinari (principalmente dalla neurolinguistica, glottodidattica, linguistica applicata, didattologia delle lingueculture, multimedia, cultural e translation studies) abbiano dimo- strato quanto sia necessario rimanere al passo coi tempi. Soprattutto con quelli dei nostri apprendenti i quali, lungi dal dipendere come in passato dal manuale di lingua e dalla sola interazione col docente, sono oggi coinvolti in un inesauribile network informativo che sempre di più li coinvolge affettivamente nel proprio quotidiano: nella veste di nativi digitali, infatti, questi sembrano indirizzarsi sempre più verso il canale multimediale al fine di selezionare i propri modelli linguistici di riferimento.

The book features well-known British literary texts but places a special emphasis on adaptations of the works of Jane Austen and William Shakespeare, figures whose afterlives have mirrored each other in the proliferation of film and television adaptations of their work. Chapters analyze myriad modes of AVT, including dubbing, subtitling, SDH, and voice-over, to demonstrate the unique ways in which these modes come together in adaptations of classics and raise questions about censorship, language ideologies, cultural references, translation strategies, humor, and language variation. In focusing on translations across geographic contexts, the book offers a richer picture of the linguistic, cultural, and ideological implications of translating literary classics for the screen and the enduring legacy of these works on a global scale.

Sulla scorta delle recenti ricerche nell’ambito della psicologia cognitiva applicata alla glottodidattica e della teoria dell’apprendimento multimediale rintracciabili nelle opere di autori quali Richard Mayer, Allan Paivio e John Sweller, questo studio intende presentare i possibili sbocchi che i video streaming reperibili in Internet possono offrire alla didattica della lingua giapponese. In particolare, si illustrerà come video che non posseggono in origine alcuna finalità pedagogica possano essere didattizzati in modo opportuno sulla base delle esigenze di sillabo del docente, delle necessità di apprendimento dei discenti, nonché della specificità della lingua. Sulla scorta del crescente interesse a livello internazionale di buona parte dei discenti nipponisti per i fenomeni contemporanei della cosiddetta J culture (si veda l’interesse crescente verso i lungometraggi animati, le fiction, i film, i manga, le visual novels di fattura nipponica) si mostrerà come immagini e testi autentici fortemente contestualizzati possano stimolare non solo un input motivazionale adeguato ai fini dell’attività didattica, ma venire altresì utilizzati come veicoli di una lingua che diviene sempre più inseparabile dall’elemento culturale. Oggi, infatti, sarebbe poco praticabile una didattica del giapponese che si sganciasse volontariamente da quei riferimenti storici, geografici, economici e di costume sempre più presenti nella vita del discente medio.
Oltre alle suddette questioni di carattere sociolinguistico, sarà altresì necessario sottolineare come, nell’ambito della didattica del giapponese, l’utilizzo di materiale streaming possa garantire il passaggio di un know-how tecnico che tenga conto delle reali esigenze comunicative degli apprendenti. Si pensi, a titolo esemplificativo, all’osservazione dei linguaggi tecnici, alle differenze di genere nel parlato, oppure alle coordinate comportamentali da rispettare nelle interazioni verbali ed extraverbali in giapponese. Attraverso la presentazione di un modulo di unità didattica costruita dall’autore su notiziari televisivi giapponesi e documentari reperibili in Internet, questo studio intende procedere alla formulazione di un’ipotesi didattica da poter implementare nell’ambito di una pedagogıa di classe che possa condurre i discenti alla scoperta della lingua attraverso attività coordinate sì dal docente, ma secondo un’ottica di costruzione delle conoscenze di tipo collaborativo e mai unidirezionale. In particolare, sulla scorta del Quadro comune europeo per le lingue (Q.C.E.R.) il quale introduce tra le proprie direttive lo sviluppo della competenza sociopragmatica ponendo al centro del processo di apprendimento la dimensione sociale ed interazionale, questo studio intende sottolineare la necessità di un percorso formativo interdisciplinare così come proposto nel passato recente da progetti europei quali CLIL-EMILE che si sono proposti di integrare i contenuti strettamente linguistici con altri settori disciplinari in una sorta di ambiente d’apprendimento doppiamente focalizzato. Utilizzando come punto di forza le nuove tecnologie nonché l’impatto che queste hanno prodotto nello stile di vita degli apprendenti, questo studio illustrerà altresì come sia possibile utilizzare i materiali streaming reperibili in rete per veicolare un insegnamento della lingua giapponese declinato anche in altri ambiti del sapere.
