Using qualitative content analysis of programs and statutes, we identify a decreased relevance of ethnicity-based mobilization and an increased emphasis on cultural, religious, and/or gender based criteria. All analyzed parties converge on the need for increased discipline and major anti-corruption measures, a smooth continuity with previous forms of populism. The extra-parliamentary group of Romanian radical populists resembles a Phoenix, regularly rising from its ashes, although only partially renewed.

While this is an often-researched topic, we believe that the current economic crisis, one of the most important in several decades, requires a new look at the effects of economic crises on support for democracy. Using panel data covering the period from November 2009 to January 2013 we are able to focus our analysis on identifying the effects of the global economic crisis on support for democracy in Romania, a fragile and still unconsolidated democracy both at the institutional and at the individual level. By estimating a series of fixed effects regression models we are able to show that both the economic crisis and evaluations of the economic performance in the past (retrospective sociotropic) do have significant effects on those components of support for democracy that combine elements of diffuse and specific support, but not on the most diffuse forms of support. According to our results, while the economic crisis did have some negative effects on middle-range forms of support for democracy, diffuse support for democracy was least affected by the current economic crisis in Romania.

acting as inhibitors for political involvement from the citizens. The prevalence of intolerance, the lack of trust in other people and in the institutions of the state, the absence of points of access to the political system and an insufficiently developed culture of protest are all factors that contribute to determining Romanians to avoid political participation. Data on voting, volunteering, and protesting demonstrate the underdevelopment of political participation in Romania.

The main argument of this paper is that the type of trust culture one lives in determines one’s attachment to democratic values. Using the latest waves of WVS/EVS and measuring trust culture based on the three dimensions identified above, I test for the effect of the functional substitutes of trust: do they manage to completely replace trust, helping to build diffuse support for democracy or do they only manage to assure the short-term functioning of the society, whitout actually having an effect (or even having a negative one) on diffuse support for democracy?
The models I estimate are hierarchical linear models, taking into account the grouping of respondents within different cultural contexts. Individual level data for the three components of trust cultures are both aggregated at country level and used in the models as contextual variables, and used as individual level variables, allowing thus for testing for several interaction effects.
