Professor Constantinos Phellas is a Medical Sociologist with interests in a variety of areas, including Health & Illness, Ageing, End-of-life Decision Making and Care, Construction of Identities, Sexualities, HIV/AIDS. His work is methodologically diverse, including statistical and social survey work as well as qualitative work based on text analysis, interaction analysis, and conversion analysis. His publications focus upon the intersection of gender, culture, and issues of sexuality among ethnic minority communities, HIV/AIDS, social & psychological aspects of public health domain. He is currently the Vice Rector for Faculty & Research at the University of Nicosia in Cyprus and the Chairperson of the Cyprus National Bioethics Committee.

Background: Our understanding about knowledge, attitudes and perceptions (KAP) of immigrants rega... more Background: Our understanding about knowledge, attitudes and perceptions (KAP) of immigrants regarding human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine is poor. We present the first systematic review on KAP of immigrant parents towards HPV vaccine offered to their children. Methods: Major bio-medical databases (Medline, Embase, Scopus and PsycINFO) were searched using a combination of keyword and database-specific terms. Following identification of studies, data were extracted, checked for accuracy, and synthesised. Quality of the studies was assessed using the Newcastle Ottawa Scale and the Joanna Briggs Institute Qualitative Assessment tool. Results: A total of 311 titles were screened against eligibility criteria; after excluding 292 titles/full texts, 19 studies were included. The included studies contained data on 2206 adults. Accounts of sexual identity experiences provided by second generation Greek and Turkish Cypriot gay men in London are examined in the light of this analysis to explore how these men negotiate Anglo-Cypriot and gay identity. Twenty-eight self-identified second generation Greek and Turkish gay men living in London were recruited by advertising in the gay press, by writing to community groups, and gay groups and organizations and by “snowballing.” In-depth face-to-face interviews were conducted with those men recruited through these channels. Data were subjected to interpretative phenomenological analysis. The personal accounts of these men demonstrate that their sexual identity does not always become their primary identity and that different identities are constructed by individuals at different places and times. Thalassemia is a genetic blood disorder (similar to sickle cell anemia). It could be life threate... more Thalassemia is a genetic blood disorder (similar to sickle cell anemia). It could be life threatening if individuals do not adhere to regular blood transfusions and iron chelation. Thalassemia is a condition with high prevalence in the Mediterranean region. Cyprus since the 1970s implemented a screening program and genetic counseling of gene carriers and as a result, new births of children with thalassemia have tremendously decreased. Today, there are about six hundred patients with Thalassemia in Cyprus. The papers in this symposium will present the psychosocial parameters associated with Thalassemia in Cyprus. Specifically, two qualitative, one quantitative and an intervention evaluation study will be presented. First, stigma experiences and perceptions of people living with Thalassemia and their spouses is explored. Needs assessment conducted on Thalassemia patients in the Republic of Cyprus deduced that patients suffer reduced QOL and poor adherence to medication. Thalassemia patients (N=25) took part in a brief ACT intervention (one two hour workshop, followed by two, weekly telephone calls). Telephone calls, aimed to provide personalised feedback, encourage the use of skills, and problem-solve difficulties in practising skills learnt during the workshop. The satisfaction with iron chelation therapy (SICT), acceptance and action questionnaire (AAQ-II), valued living questionnaire (VLQ), SF-36 measuring QOL, and satisfaction with intervention were used to measure the effectiveness of the intervention at pre and post intervention.
