This complexity is analysed in the present volume through the eyes of twelve scholars specialised in Middle Eastern and North African studies.
Arabic and Semitic linguistics and dialectology, Arab literature and popular music and culture are some of the broad range of subjects included in this volume which engages different geographical areas of the so-called Mare Nostrum and various historical periods, from the medieval to the contemporary era.

A special attention is given to the sociolinguistic situation of the Arab world, explaining the differences and the interactions between the varieties of Arabic, and the scientific interpretations of phenomena like diglossia, triglossia, and so on.

Is there a relation between the voice of a person and the language he speaks? Which parameters must be taken into consideration if the person speaks Arabic? This book contains the results of a research on the phonetics and phonology of some varieties of Arabic (especially Moroccan) and the application of some acoustic data to experiments of Speaker Recognition with semi-automatic and automatic systems.

The analysis is carried out by studying the semantics of the Arabic terms /dahr/ and /sāʿa/, starting from their reflexes in various Semitic languages and cultures of the ancient Near East, and observing their evolution in Arabic poetic texts from the Jāhiliyya to the Umayyad period as well as in major lexicographical works.

From his Jesuit center located near Algiers, he travelled all over Algeria and arrived until Tunis where he spent the last period of his journey. His travelogue, published in 1885–86, is almost unknown to scholarly research and is a very rich source for anthropological, ethnographical, historical, social, religious and linguistic information about the countries and the cultures he visited. The present article deals with his travelogue and attempts to draw the attention to some aspects of his work and in particular to the linguistic issues that it contains.
