Floriano De Rango is Professor of Telecommunication and Networking at the Department of Informatics, Modeling, Electronics and System Engineering (DIMES) of the University of Calabria, Italy. He got the Ph.d in System and Computer Engineering in 2005 working on Scalable Routing Strategy for Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANET). He co-authored till now more than 280 papers in well-known International Conferences and Journals producing contributions also with well recognized Prof. such as Proff. Mario Gerla, Jon Crowcroft (IEEE Fellows), Piet Van Mieghem.
He has been involved as Editorial Board members in many International Journal such as International Journal of Communications Systems (Wiley), Internet Technology Letters (Wiley), Electronics (MDPI - Networking section), in International Journal of Distributed Sensor Networks (Hindawi), in Sensors Journal (Internet of Things section), in International Journal of Bio-Inspired Computation. He entered in the Top Italian Scientist list for Computer Science Engineering in 2019 with h-index=40, i-10=108 and a total citations of 4300. He was ranked in 2020 and 2021 in the Top 2% Computer Science World Scientist according to clarivate https://data.mendeley.com/datasets/btchxktzyw/2 where a Stanford databases ranking more than 500000 scientist has been considered listing scientists one the basis of the productivity, impact (normalized h-index), number of authors in publication and excluding self-citations and considering the normalization over the whole career period till 2019 and till 2020.
The candidate supported IEEE and ACM in organization and management toles (GC or PC) of many International Conferences such as Consumer Communication and Networking Conference (CCNC), Distributed Simulation and Real-Time Systems (DS-RT), Simultech, WinSys, Wireless Days.
He gained experience also in the industrial field founding three startup companies Spintel Ltd, Thunderbit Ltd and Voice Ltd working respectively in the field od Internet of things, Broadband Wireless Networks and Artificial Intelligence applied to Voice Recognition and Automation Systems. He received awards for research and development activities in National and European competition. An example is the Intel Business Challenge Europe 2013 competition where his proposal and business plan was ranked in the top 20 industrial ideas In Europe by the Intel Corporation. He leaded many National Projects and he was involved as researcher in some European Projects.

In particular, the aims of the proposed protocols are to reduce interference issues, due to the data transmissions in wireless environ- ment. The proposed protocols use time series prediction models and also multi-objective metric, based on the evaluation of co-channel in- terference levels, end-to-end delay, and link duration probability along the di erent links from sources towards destinations. These param- eters are modelled through an optimization problem. The key fac- tors are to exploit the advantages available to the Standard 802.11p, based on a dynamic allocation mechanism of the DSRC spectrum, aimed at the reduction of the co-channel interference and the maxi- mization of the link duration probability (two key issues in vehicular environments). Another topic discussed in this thesis is related to the smart vehicular tra c management through VANETs infrastructure and communications(V2I and V2V). A distributed algorithm with the aim to build less congested path for the vehicles in a urban scenario has been developed. It is also considered the problem regarding to enhance air quality around the cities reducing the vehicles CO2 emis- sions. There are di erent causes related to the CO2 emissions such as the average travelled time spent by vehicles inside the city and their average speed. Hence, with a better tra c management the average time spent by the vehicles in the city will be considerably reduced as well as CO2 emissions. Deafness problem in directional communications environments is a very common issue that could sig... more Deafness problem in directional communications environments is a very common issue that could significantly degrade the network performance during frame exchanging process. Although the use of Directional Request to Send (DRTS) and Directional Clear to Send (DCTS) together with the Directional Network Allocation Vector (DNAV) can mitigate the effects of this problem, in complex directional network scenarios such as Mobile Ad Hoc Network (MANET) in which mobile nodes are equipped with Smart Antenna Systems (SAS), it could be not sufficient to adopt these expedients. We propose a Round-Robin MAC (RR-MAC) approach that provides a logical sectorization of the transmission plane, limiting the maximum beamforming time of nodes, in order to reduce the frame collisions in the channel and at the same time to ensure an acceptable overall throughput in the network.

Edge and fog computing architectures make possible the realization of even more complex and distributed services. Moreover, the distribution of sensors and devices gives us the possibility to increase the knowledge of the monitored environments by exploiting Machine to Machine (M2M) communications protocols and their architectures. The rapid growth of IoT increased the number of the smart devices able to acquire, actuate and exchange information in a smart way. In this chapter, the main issues related to the design of an architecture for a smart cooperative video-surveillance system will be presented. In this paper, the attention is focused on the design of a hybrid platoon system capable of minim... more In this paper, the attention is focused on the design of a hybrid platoon system capable of minimising energy consumption in the vehicular environment. In this paper, we focused our attention on the design of a Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) system which offers support to the platooning management to achieve a global optimisation of the groups. In this way, new formations help vehicles to reduce energy consumption exploiting platooning. In this work, we propose a novel algorithm based on Gray Wolf Optimization (GWO) to perform the search of the best platoon. Moreover, in this work we propose a protocol to accomplish platoon tasks. We evaluated the system performances of the platoon formation by considering several constraints such as platoon size, platoon speed, average platoon energy consumption, and so on. For the analysis of the results, we use the Omnet++ framework for protocol issues and Matlab tools for carrying out algorithm performances.

This paper proposes a lightweight security mechanism to manage security levels in MQTT protocol r... more This paper proposes a lightweight security mechanism to manage security levels in MQTT protocol reducing the protocol overhead and using a flexible security negotiation in comparison with classical TLS solution applied to application layer protocol in the IoT context. Our proposal considers the security features around the topic and it involves the publishers as the main actors to negotiate the possible security levels on the topics. The proposal supports an end-to-end security features reducing the complexity of the broker that can only forward encrypted packet towards subscribers without performing ciphering or encryption/decryption. The performance of the proposed solutions has been tested considering increasing number of topics and clients and considering some metrics such as processed packets and bytes, processing time and RAM usage. A comparison between the dynamic security approach with MQTT and classical $\\text{MQTT}+\\text{TLS}$ has been also considered.

Vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) represent a particular mobile technology that permits communic... more Vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) represent a particular mobile technology that permits communication between vehicles, offering security and comfort. Nowadays, distributed mobile wireless computing is becoming a very important communication paradigm, due to its flexibility to adapt to different mobile applications. In this work, an interference aware metric is proposed in order to reduce the level of interference between each pair of nodes at the MAC and routing layer. In particular, this metric with a prediction algorithm is proposed to work in a cross-layered MAC and an on-demand routing scheme in multi-radio vehicular networks, wherein each node is equipped with two multi-channel radio interfaces. The proposed metric is based on the maximization of the average signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) level of the connection between source and destination. In order to relieve the effects of the cochannel interference perceived by mobile nodes, transmission channels are switched on a basis of a periodical SIR evaluation. Our solution has been integrated with an on-demand routing scheme but it can be applied to other routing strategies. Three on-demand interference aware routing schemes integrating IEEE 802.11p Multi-channel MAC have been tested to assess the benefits of the novel metric applied to a vehicular context. NS-3 has been used for implementing and testing the proposed idea, and significant performance improvements were obtained: in particular, the proposed policy has resulted in an enhancement of network performance in terms of throughput and packet delivery ratio.

This paper focuses on a recently proposed Diff-Serv like architecture called scalable core (SCORE... more This paper focuses on a recently proposed Diff-Serv like architecture called scalable core (SCORE). This one is used in the terrestrial network in order to offer more scalability and deterministic guaranteed services. The integration issues between a scalable terrestrial and a satellite network based on Int-Serv architecture are outlined. The Aggregated RSVP protocol on integrated scalable terrestrial and IntServ satellite network has been introduced in order to guarantee the interoperation between the SCORE architecture and the satellite segment. The system performance in terms of signalling overhead and resource utilization has been set out. The study shows that increasing aggregated bandwidth reservation can improve signalling but can under utilize the terrestrial channel. The satellite network, instead, can improve its static efficiency due to the increased number of calls accepted on the satellite link.

This book contains the proceedings of the 11th International Conference on Simulation and Modelin... more This book contains the proceedings of the 11th International Conference on Simulation and Modeling Methodologies, Technologies and Applications (SIMULTECH 2021), which is sponsored by the Institute for Systems and Technologies of Information, Control and Communication (INSTICC) and held in cooperation with the ACM SIGSIM - Special Interest Group on Simulation and Modeling, the Institute of Engineering and Management (IEM), the Society for the Study of Artificial Intelligence and Simulation of Behaviour (AISB), the European Council for Modeling and Simulation (ECMS), the European Training and Simulation Association (ETSA) and the Bulgarian Modeling and Simulation Association (BULSIM). SIMULTECH 2021 is held as an online web-based event, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, from 7 – 9 July, 2021. This conference, which is the eleventh in a row, has again met with much interest of the research community worldwide, which is the best proof that, first, the idea of the SIMULTECH conferences that has been conceived some years ago by a group of dedicated people with vision has been a proper choice. And, second, that the research and scholarly community working in the field of broadly perceived simulation has responded with great interest in spite of such an abundance of conferences on all possible topics that we presently face. SIMULTECH 2021 has again proven that the high expectations of the “founding fathers” of this conference series has been fulfilled, and the interest of the research and scholarly community has been not only maintained, but even amplified as, in addition to regular participants, many new people have submitted results of their new research. As in the previous editions, the participation of younger scientists and engineers is a very important factor and very highly encouraged. This year we have again succeeded to bring together top researchers, engineers and practitioners interested in methodologies and applications of modeling and simulation from all parts of the world. The accepted papers demonstrate new and innovative methodologies and solutions. They also highlight technical issues, challenges, and trends in this field. The high quality of the SIMULTECH 2021 program is enhanced by three distinguished keynote lectures, delivered by renowned international experts in their fields: Gregory Monakhov (AnyLogic, United States), Marlon Dumas (University of Tartu, Estonia) and Peter Fritzson (Linköping University, Sweden). SIMULTECH 2021 received 64 paper submissions from 30 countries in all continents, of which only 26% have been accepted as full papers, showing the intention of preserving a high-quality forum for the next editions of this conference. A double blind peer paper review was performed by the International Program Committee members, all of them recognized in at least one of the main conference topic areas, with an invaluable help by leading experts in the fields. Building an interesting and successful program for the conference requires the dedicated efforts of many people; we thank them all. Firstly, we must thank the authors, whose research and development efforts are recorded here. Secondly, we thank the members of the International Program Committee and additional reviewers for their diligence and expert reviewing. We also gratefully acknowledge the professional support of the INSTICC team for all organizational processes, especially given the need to introduce online streaming, forum management, direct messaging facilitation and other web-based activities in order to make it possible for SIMULTECH 2021 authors to present their work and share ideas with colleagues in spite of the logistic difficulties caused by the current pandemic situation. Finally, we would like to thank the invited distinguished keynote speakers for their invaluable contribution and for taking the time to synthesize and deliver their great talks.
