In the sixteenth century, Paranaguá Bay was a region of diffi cult access because of navigation problems of its mouth,
the lack of easy fl uvial communication with the continent interior, as well as for the fact of being in an area disputed
between Portugal and Spain because of the ambiguities of the Treaty of Tordesillas. However, it is known since at
least 1550, when it was visited by Hans Staden, who found some Portuguese men in contact with the Indians. In the
seventeenth century the knowledge of the bay increased progressively with the advancement of the activities of Indian
slavery and gold mining. The fi rst cartographical representation of the bay appeared on the map of the captaincy of São Vicente, shown on the “Atlas of Brazil” by Joao Teixeira Albernaz I (the elder), between 1631-42. In 1653, during the gold mining boom, Pedro de Souza Pereira made the first exclusive cartographic representation of the bay, detailing its inner geographical features and showing its gold mines. Both two maps were used by João Teixeira Albernaz II (the young) in his “Demotração (sic) of Pernagoa and Cananea”, 1666. The iconographic representation and maps show how
the Bay of Paranagua had been progressively incorporated into the Portuguese colonial scope during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. At the end of the seventeenth century the limits between Spaniards and Portugueses would be
located further south, between the villages of Colonia del Sacramento and Laguna.

These articles discuss the map of Paranaguá bay (1653), as well as recover the letter that describes it. Widely known, it was previously attributed to Eleodoro Ebano Pereira by several scholars. We demonstrate that the map was performed by Pedro de Souza Pereira, relative of the Governor General Salvador Correa de Sá e Benevides, and is the oldest map of mineral resources of the colony. In the map are described the Paranaguá bay, its bars, the main islands and 21 locations of gold mines. With this map, Pedro de Souza Pereira seeks to locate the mines and settle the production of alluvial gold works in the period 1651-59. This organization would be important for Salvador Correa could vindicate royal privileges as Mines Governor. However, Salvador Correa loses its power in 1660 during the Rio de Janeiro Uprising, and the mines return to be explored without royal control. The mines of São Vicente Captaincy, including Paranagua and Curitiba ones, had capital importance in the generation of human resources who have come to discover the gold workings of the Brazil´s eighteenth century.

The establishment of hydrological disasters frequency standard is a difficult task because of the lack of well fitted historical data series. The establishment of these standards through historical surveys in newspapers and historical archives is an option to set minimum frequency data. The data survey for floods and landslides in Southern Serra do Mar range, in southern Brazil, could establish parameters for frequency of hydrological disasters in that area. The research involved digital and analogical bases, including newspaper reports and historical monographs. Altogether 38 hydrological events were identified in the period of 1796–1913 for the region. The data focus on two main periods: the period of 1846–1913, which involved one event every 2.9 years, and 11.2 years for the large-scale events; and the period of 1960–1980, which presented one event every 1.7 years, and 7.4 years for the large-scale events.
