La poesia, infatti, da un punto di vista prettamente tecnico, consiste in 'linee di organizzazione della lingua', per cui nell'ambito della prosodia e della metrica è possibile spiegare 'norme' e presunte 'eccezioni' riconducendole, in genere, a tendenze e a fenomeni linguistici: in particolare, la conoscenza della grammatica storica del latino e del processo evolutivo della lingua latina si rivelano di fondamentale importanza per la spiegazione di innumerevoli fenomeni prosodici e metrici.
Nell'ambito degli studi filologici, peraltro, non sarebbe possibile emendare un testo tràdito che presenti errori o guasti, proponendo emendamenti o congetture sia nel campo della produzione poetica che nel campo della produzione prosastica (nelle clausole, in particolare), senza una reale conoscenza della prosodia e della metrica con le loro peculiari implicazioni linguistiche.
Ampio spazio è dedicato alla metrica catulliana e alla metrica oraziana.
Lo studio della fonetica e della morfologia, inteso in tal senso, risulta, altresì, fondamentale per la comprensione della metrica latina; anche in questo àmbito, peraltro, è possibile spiegare 'norme' e presunte 'eccezioni' , riconducendole, in genere, a tendenze e fenomeni linguistici.
Lo studio della lingua latina nella sua genesi storica, nonché nel suo processo evolutivo, permette, infine, di conoscere più a fondo anche la lingua italiana, sia dal punto di vista lessicale che dal punto di vista fonetico, morfologico e sintattico.
Il testo del Brassicanus assieme a materiale sicuramente eucheriano ne contiene anche di Gregorio Magno, che figura soprattutto nei Moralia e nelle Homiliae in Euangelia e in Ezechielem, e dello Pseudo Agostino: sia la tradizione manoscritta che criteri interni, di cui si disserta nell’Introduzione, escludono che l’edizione del Brassicanus offra il testo genuino di Eucherio.
L’edizione cselliana del Wotke risulta interpolata per le Instructiones: fra i pochi codici collazionati lo studioso ha sopravvalutato il Sessorianus 77 (S) da lui ritenuto del VI sec.; questo offre, a suo avviso, una prior commentatio delle opere di Eucherio, dallo stesso poi retractata et amplificata e tramandata codicibus alterius familiae, di cui ritiene poziore il Parisinus Latinus 9550 (P), del sec. VI-VII. In realtà il Sessorianus è della seconda metà del sec. VIII e rappresenta non un primo stadio delle Formulae e delle Instructiones, ma un “abregé” posteriore. Il Wotke ha utilizzato il codice pozione P, ma ha avuto il torto di integrarlo per le Instructiones con S: sicché, fra l’altro, alle pp. 118, 1 - 123, 4 della sua edizione figurano delle parti che sono presenti esclusivamente nel Sessorianus e che non sono altro che degli estratti delle Expositiunculae in euangelium attribuite ad Arnobio il Giovane: anche in questo caso sia la tradizione manoscritta che criteri interni, di cui si disserta nell’Introduzione, escludono che l’edizione del Wotke offra il testo genuino di Eucherio.
