The old paradigm of nation-state system has been changed dramatically, in particular the issue of sovereignty that was the basis of state system. New paradigm imply redefining of sovereignty and the transformation of the role of the state in world politics. However, political parties remain functioning as the main political actors of the nation state. The paper aims to explore how political parties perceive globalization and global issues and intends to answer the following questions: How parties reflect on globalization issues and themes? How they perceive their role in globalized society?

These divisions affect not only ethnic identities and national politics within Croatia, but impact relations with nearly all of the country’s neighbors. The aim was to use commemorations, and specifically political speeches given at commemorative events, as a lens through which to observe how political, religious, and intellectual elites, along with a variety of other mnemonic actors, frame the past in order to buttress their contemporary vision of Croatian society or delegitimize the vision of their political opponents. The contributors to this volume used an interdisciplinary approach, including cognitive linguistics, history, political science, media studies, cultural studies, and ethnography in order to thoroughly examine how the top-down process ...

Both sites of memory represent a symbol of Partisan crimes at the end of the war. The commemorations are highly politicized and often used for discrediting political opponents. After a post-communist regime was established in Croatia in 1990, a strong anti-communist discourse emerged. As part of this new discourse, the official communist history was challenged and revised. By analyzing commemorative speeches and contested media narratives around these commemorations, this chapter presents the main arguments about the communist legacy in Croatia. The debate about the communist legacy, including the two commemorations presented in this chapter, clearly shows how different frames are used not only to deal with the past and compete in the dynamic process of nation and identity building but also to discredit political and ideologic...

After the war in the nineties and the dissolution of Yugoslavia political relations between Croat... more After the war in the nineties and the dissolution of Yugoslavia political relations between Croatia and Serbia are dominantly marked by historic legacy and inability to deal with the 20th-century traumas. Relations between the two countries are annually at the lowest level during remembering Croatian Operation Storm at the beginning of August. In opposition (and relation) to the victimization narrative on the fall of Vukovar, Operation Storm in Croatia became the keystone of the winner narrative of the Homeland War. For this reason, as opposed to being commemorated in Vukovar, in Knin, the end of the war and victory is celebrated in the state-organized event of the operation’s anniversary on 5 August. Main frames in Croatia are the legitimacy of operation Storm, victory, unity, end of the war, sacrifice, and heroism of Croatian defenders. On the other side, since 2015, the leaders of Serbia and Republika Srpska have organized an official parallel commemoration in Serbia dedicated to the Serb victims of the operation after years of unofficial commemorations by Croatian Serb refugees. Official commemoration in Serbia is an important part of the discourse of victimization of Serbs and revisiting the history of the wars in the nineties, which is connected with the rise of Aleksandar Vučić. Main frames in Serbia are the victimization of Serbs, ethnic cleansing, continuity of anti-Serbian policy, future and reconciliation, how Croatia can celebrate Storm and never again Storm.

Drawing upon four years of fieldwork, media analysis, and recent historiographical debates, the authors take a transnational approach in examining why Bleiburg remains one of the most controversial commemorations not just in Croatia but in the region. The article focuses on historical narratives in the commemorative speeches, the role of space in shaping memory politics, symbols and monuments present at Bleiburg Field, and the broader context of how Austrian politics affects the commemoration and its public perception.

Despite its academic and policy relevance, students and academics studying the region do not have a single source of reading material where they can learn about the challenges facing the region. This book aims to serve an array of college students and become a go-to source in studying the region. Adopting an interdisciplinary approach, the book provides readers with a comprehensive account of the various challenges inhibiting democratization and reconciliation. The chapters are written by authors from different disciplines, thus allowing readers to analyze the region from different perspectives.

Others do not, and have been wiped off the face of the earth again. This article looks at one failed de facto state, the breakaway Serb Republic of Krajina (RSK) that existed for five years (1991–1995), before it was overrun by Croatian armed forces in Operation Storm. What did RSK do wrong that the surviving de facto states do right? Research has shown that in order to survive de facto states must have a patron that will protect them and supply them with financial and other resources; in addition, they must engage in state-building (the establishment of functioning state institutions) and in nation-building (fostering patriotism and a common national identity). RSK failed on all three scores. The Krajina leaders did initially enjoy the backing of the Milos˘ević regime, but fell out with it and lost that support. Rather than build strong state institutions they pilfered the state and allowed the society to slide into anarchy. Finally, they never made any attempt to create a sense of separate RSK identity linked to the state. RSK was presented only as the westernmost outpost of Serbdom, and as a temporary structure pending the unification of all Serbs in one state. This is not the stuff successful de facto states are made of.

Razumijevanje višedimenzionalne prirode globalizacije i složenosti dinamike kojom globalizacijski procesi počinju prožimati sve segmente suvremenog društva zahtjeva široku interdisciplinarnu znanstvenu raspravu.

Također, dokumenti detaljno oslikavaju unutarnju organizaciju, funkcioniranje i odnose unutar Republike Srpske Krajine. Treću razinu čine međunarodni dokumenti relevantni za srpsku pobunu u Hrvatskoj: mišljenja Badinterove komisije, Vanceov plan, rezolucije Ujedinjenih naroda i Plan Z4.

With attention to media representations of commemorative events and opinion poll data, it draws on interviews and participant observation at commemorative events to focus on the speeches of political elites, together with the speeches of opposition politicians and other social actors (such as the Catholic Church, anti-fascist organizations and war veterans' and victims' organizations) who challenge official narratives. Offering innovative approaches to researching and analyzing commemorative practices in post-conflict societies, this examination of a nation's transition from a Yugoslav republic to an independent state-and now the newest member of the European Union-constitutes a unique case study for scholars of cultural memory and identity politics interested in the production and representation of national identities in official narratives.
