Background: In the field of birth architecture research, there is a gap in the description of the spatial and physical characteristics of birth environments that impact users’ health, specifically for what concerns the perception by women. Methods: The study focuses on multi-centered mixed methods design, employing both quantitative and qualitative research methods (questionnaire, spatial analysis) and covering different disciplines (architecture, environmental psychology, and midwifery). Results: The results revealed significant differences between the two settings and some associations between perceived and spatial data concerning: calm atmosphere, greater intimacy, spacious birth room, clarity of service points, clarity in finding midwives, sufficient space for labor, noise, pr...

The built environment can support and encourage physical activity. The aim of this study is to establish which specific elements of the built environment can contribute to improve the physical activity of self-sufficient, non-institutionalized and living in the city adults > 65 years. Methods An extensive literature search was conducted in several database. Umbrella review methodology was used to include the systematic reviews that presented a sufficient methodological quality. Data from reviews were undergone to critical appraisal, data extraction and synthesis. Results Eleven reviews were included. The elements positively associated with physical activity in the elderly resulted: walkability; residential density/urbanisation; street connectivity; access/availability of services and destinations (land-use mix destination diversity and access, public transit,...

They undergo continuous transformations throughout their lifetime. In this scenario the design of the flows and pathways (people and logistics) within the hospital is of great importance in the performance of built environments concerning accessibility to care and efficiency in the delivery of care. The network of flows is in turn linked to needs conditioned by technological developments and health requirements. Given the concept of base building and fit-‐out systems tested in the INO project, this paper aims to address the notion of ‘open building’ in healthcare buildings studying the relationship between the network of flows and, base building systems. This topic has been developed analysing the empirical case study of Santa Maria Nuova Hospital, which, since the year of its foundation (1288), has never stopped being a hospital. It has undergone several renovation projects over the past six centuries and is now undergoing t...

The book highlights how spatial properties, such as accessibility, visibility, proximity, and intelligibility affect people’s behavior and interactions in hospital public spaces. Based on the authors’ research, the book includes detailed analysis of three hospitals and criteria that can support the design in circulation areas, arrival and entrance, first point of welcome, reception, and the interface between city and hospital. Illustrated with 150 black and white images.
