The Shield with Medusa’s head and its “double”, both painted by Caravaggio, were the subject of i... more The Shield with Medusa’s head and its “double”, both painted by Caravaggio, were the subject of imitations by five artists from the late 16th and the first half of the 17th century in Italy. This article analyses how these artists interpreted and integrated the two works in their paintings. Some of them did not just imitate the works, but developed strategies to avoid or outmatch the visual and narrative tensions that both shields raise. In the absence of sufficient textual sources, these paintings are excellent visual evidence of the impact and resonance the aforementioned works by Caravaggio had after they were realized.
