Songs in Italian L2 teaching The use of songs among other media as a language teaching tool for Italian L1 and L2 has become an important tradition in Italy and abroad. Memorizability, planetary diffusion, (inter)cultural implications, integration with moving images and the ease of finding authentic materials are the main advantages of this medium. However, it is impossible not to reflect on the nature of Italian in different types of songs (ancien régime songs; songwriter songs; pop songs; (t)rap). Each genre has its own characteristics, yet they all lend themselves to the study of the real varieties of the Italian linguistic repertoire.

Bacci Pagano is the name of the private detective, main character of the best seller series of "urban thrillers" (seven novels and one collection of short stories, 2004-2011) by Bruno Morchio (1954). The series is located in the city of Genoa, and the localisation is realized thanks to a tight toponomastic and linguistic characterization, more evident in the first three novels, less and less so in the other ones. The author himself provides his first five novels with a glossary of dialectal and local words, here assembled in a comprehensive glossary of 88 entries of Genoese and Ligurian origin (in addition, 11 entries of Sardinian origin). The author's choice aims to enhance the "neoveristic" charachter of his work and to stregthen a sort of autoidentification by the readers.

In Genoa and Liguria too, as in other Italian regions, a great deal of «urban thrillers» were published recently. Starting from the best selling Genoese Bruno Morchio and his main character, the private detective Bacci Pagano, many authors followed the trend, mostly characterized by the use of local names, in order to enhance a sort of self-identification by the readers. The essay examines more than one hundred Ligurian authors and the fictitious names of their «heroes» trying to point out their local and sometimes physical or moral disposition. Women writers› special attitude to self-portrait in the creation of their protagonists is underlined.
