Two hundred and two questionnaires were randomly distributed to library users. The data gathered were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The result revealed that different responses were given on their mode of skill acquisition ranging from program organized by librarian, trail and error, friends etc.; and the information resources used vary from individual respondents. The majority of the respondents indicated that user education and information handling skills have impacted greatly on their use of information resources. Following the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s, however, inequality in employment received more attention. Federal measures were put into place to rectify the culture of inequality in the country as a whole and within its workforce. Nearly fifty years have passed since President Kennedy created the Committee on Equal Employment Opportunity, created to ensure that hiring and employment practices were free of racial bias. Since President Kennedy's mandate, much attention has been given to the hiring process, but employment practices such as promotion and workforce culture have been largely ignored. Specifically, research with African Americans has been limited to defining constructs such as the "glass ceiling" (West, 1993; Williams & Utsey, 2010). Little research has addressed mechanisms that highlight ways in which race might impact job stress. No systematic research has been conducted that examines the individual factors and beliefs of African American workers that may be related to work related stress and/ or declines in health. However, it seems intuitive that stress related to race would spill over into the workplace. At the same time, there is scant research that addresses the unique position of the African American professional who may be employed at a workplace based upon Western European culture. Most research with minority samples has focused specifically on the concerns of disadvantaged individuals (Jackson & Stewart, 2003). Though previous research suggests that individuals with more resources are better prepared to cope with the stress of everyday life, it is important to discover the occupational risks that characterize the lives of those at each socioeconomic level (Williams & Collins, 1995). The goals of the study described here were to examine the relationship between job stress and the types of coping strategies African American professionals may employ to deal with this stress. The authors propose that African American professionals may rely upon acculturation strategies--the implication being that people of African descent must adjust or adapt to the dominant Western European culture in the United States--to deal with work stress. A brief review of the salient literature on American work culture, perceived job stress, and acculturation follows. Work life in the U.S. The demands of the current pace of life have had an enduring impact on the American lifestyle. Americans are now more than ever having challenges in balancing work and family life. Cultural changes including higher rates of divorce, single parenthood, increased working hours, and debt, have without a doubt contributed to reliance upon relationships at work. In addition to reliance upon workplace relationships, these cultural changes have exacerbated levels of job stress. Two overarching sources of stress at work for male and female employees in a variety of job settings include job pressure and lack of organizational support (Spielberger, Vagg, Wasala & Quick, 2003). Job pressure includes components of the work itself, while organizational support refers to supervisors, coworkers, and policies and procedures of the employment organization. Work life is important to healthy employees, and workers are a company's most valuable asset. Managerial styles and poor communication systems within companies are the greatest source of worry for employees according to a survey done by the American Psychological Association (APA) (2007). Michie (2002) stated that in order to ameliorate workplace stress, organizational level interventions must occur. Some employers have recognized this. For example, ConocoPhillips, one of the nation's largest energy companies, has implemented employee network groups for minorities to increase corporate citizenship, which has been defined as the development of "mutually beneficial, interactive and trusting relationships between the company and its many stakeholders" (Waddock, 2003, p. …

The area of health related issues are included, maternal and child mortality has plagued the country through time. Lately, government and stakeholders are discussing development of health policies, establishment of health centres, and setting up information management centres on health for some hospitals in the country. However, Public libraries have been overlooked in this regard. Undermining the role of the public libraries in the community, they are not considered when decisions are made which cannot survive without the provision of information in that respect. Therefore, the role of public libraries in the attainment of MDGs health issues becomes a daunting task for these institutions. The non-inclusion (nation’s developmen...

The single stage random sampling technique was used to select 16 out of the 25 commercial banks with a population size of 1507 managers. Thereafter, a questionnaire was used to collect data on a sample size of 1179 managers out of which 932 responded given a response rate of 79.1 percent. The study found that information availability and utilization had significant correlation with creativity of the respondents. In addition, information availability and information utilization jointly and individually have significantly determined creativity of managers in commercial banks in Nigeria. It is therefore recommended that the board of management in these commercial banks should make information available on time for use of managers for their improved creativity.
