Hemingway's «Hills Like White Elephants», one cannot but be intrigued by the interpretation task required from the reader: the author omits fundamental information, threatening the understanding of the scene described in the text. This article questions, therefore, what it means to interpret this text, discussing the pervasive idea that interpreting always coincides with the answer to the question «what did the author mean?». Critically developing this point, I will thus affirm that a story such by Hemingway will not only determine a new and more pregnant concept of «interpretation»

In fact, the possibility of an emotional linguistic expression referringto artistic objects or natural situations crosses a number of themes of classical and analytical aesthetics. The aim of this essay is therefore to enucleate what the presuppositions of a theory of expressiveness should be, starting from their historical genesis in the «expression theory» elaborated by Dewey. In particular, throughthe critical examination of two contemporary orientations on this issue –the Wollheim projectivist theory and the profile one by Kivy –, the aim is to bring attention to two indispensable aspects ofa theory of expressiveness, which, although in need of revision, were already recognizable in the expression theory: a. a theory of intentionality and b. the dialectical consideration between Leiband Körper. In particular, the direction sketched at the end would suggest that it is this dialectical experience of the body that could be considered as the intentional condition for the existence and recognizability of expressive phenomena

As you probably know, the latter underline the need to think a passage from the perception’s «mute» expressivity, to the word’s linguistic expressivity. So, to reach my goal, I will start in pointing out a not very well studied symbol’s feature: his concreteness, that bounds up his primary sense with the world’s perceptual expressivity. Then, throughout this analysis, I will try to focus at least an important meaning of Merleau-Ponty’s notion of flesh. Particularly, I will stress the idea of reversibility as characterizing both the notion of flesh and the symbol’s concreteness. In the end, this idea will make us to see, in investigating symbols, a way to complete the unrealized Merleau-Ponty’s philosophical project, that is the idea of thinking at the flesh in his passage from perceptual to linguistic expressivity.
