Valerio Marotta
Valerio Marotta obtained his law degree from the University “Federico II” of Naples in October 1981, with a thesis on History of Roman Law (imperial legislation). In 1983 he was admitted as a doctorate student to the I order of «Doctorate Studies in Roman Law and Eastern Mediterranean Law» (centre: University of Rome “La Sapienza”, joint universities: University of Florence etc.).
In May 1985 he concluded his post-graduate studies with the highest marks “summa cum laude”, his dissertation being on the Exegesis of the Sources of Roman Law, at «Centro di Studi Romanistici V. Arangio-Ruiz», University of Naples. In November 1987 he obtained the merit «Research Doctor of Roman Law and Eastern Mediterranean Law». He won the first post as a research fellow in the group II (IUS/18) at the University of Florence, where he started working on 12 February 1991. His post was confirmed in 1994. From 1990 to 1993 he was the assistant secretary of the «Circolo Toscano di Diritto Romano e Storia del Diritto “Ugo Coli”». On I June 1998 he was transferred as a research fellow to the Law Faculty of the University of Parma. Since 1 November 1998 he has been associate professor of History of Roman Law at the Law Faculty, Parma University (subj. IUS/18). He has been editor of Ostraka, a periodical on Antiquity, with Mario Torelli as editor-in chief. Now He is a member of the editorial staff of Studia et Documenta Historiae et Iuris. He is a member of AST, Associazione di Studi Tardoantichi and of the Associazione Romanistica Costantiniana. He is member of «Accademia Petrarca di Scienze lettere e Arti» in Arezzo. Since 1 october 2001 he is Full Professor of Roman Law at the Law Faculty, Pavia University. He was directeur d’études (visiting professor) at EHESS («Ecole des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales») of Paris in 2006-2007. From 2002 to 2014 He taught Exegesis of the sources of Roman Law and Institutes of Roman Law at the Law Faculty, Florence University. From 2013/2014 he teaches Roman Law at the Faculty of Canon Law of the Pontifical Gregorian University (Rome). He was director of the «Dipartimento di Diritto Romano, Storia e Filosofia del Diritto» Pavia University and member of the «Giunta dei Direttori di Dipartimento» of the same University. Valerio Marotta studied above all History of the Roman Juridical Thought and imperial legislation between II and III century A.D. Moreover he was interested in Private Law, Criminal Law and Public law of the Principate. Between his most recent concerns, you can find the Roman Citizenship, the Local Laws after the constitutio Antoniniana, the Military Law of Late Antiquity and the Pactus legis Salicae. He is author of ten wide monographs and more or less seventy essays, in reviews and in miscellanies, published in Italy, France, Spain, Germany and written in Italian, English, German and Castilian.
