These are case studies based on the objectives and methods of the Project Eurykleia – celles qui avaient un nom. The studies share the notion that the active women we know through the documentation are no less exceptional than the active men. Instead of writing a history of the category of sex, that is, “women”, the history of women and gender must consider women as men are considered, that is, without preconceptions about them. It is about considering them in their action inserted in their societies. In other words, the contributor’s main hypothesis consists of considering that women in ancient societies were not invariably or systematically sexualized.

Visual languages, iconographic elements, spatial conceptions, modes of behaviour, actions and performance that created the divine, as well as intellectual constructs, narratives and knowledge that made divine beings present are issues that make up this collection of contributions by an interdisciplinary and international team.

By engaging with religion as a fundamental factor of social cohesion and political stability, both in his theoretical works and his speeches, Cicero shaped a wide-ranging and ambitious discourse around themes and images that were firmly located in first-century BCE Rome. His contribution also proved very influential in the centuries to come. The volume focuses on the relationship between law, religion, and religious authority in Cicero; the interplay between divine images, ritual contexts, and the conceptualization of the divine; Cicero's construction of a Greek deity for a Roman audience; the role of religious elements in the shaping of a Roman political identity; the tension between 'natural law' and Roman pietas; the problem of divine and human foresight; the relationship between theoretical views of the gods and late Republican public cult; and the reception, use, and readaptation of Ciceronian theology in the English Enlightenment.

An immense desolation and abandoned fields are described as outcomes of the impiety and greed of a vicious Roman provincial governor. Religious content plays a significant role in Cicero's speech, and this article focuses on the cases of Diana of Segesta and Ceres of Henna (Verr. 2.4.72-83 and 105-115). These episodes emotionally impact Cicero's audience by connecting the Sicilian loss of divine statues with significant life stressors in Roman urban life. Divine images, sufficiently close to the Romans, work in the speech as catalysts both for their worshippers in the episodes and Cicero's audience. Cicero connected the misfortunes of the Sicilians to occasions when religious responses to political and military crises were fundamental to the safety of Rome, in powerful associations in which religious feelings and memories of resilience are at the heart of the narrative.

Through a study of the ways in which he refers to them and of the contexts and circumstances in which it happens, the main objective is to observe the discursive mechanisms structuring Cicero’s mentions these figures. Dealing with brief references to Aspasia in De inventione, Themista in De finibus, and Leontium in De natura deorum, one can see that praise or reproach depend on the point to be defended or attacked in each argumentative context. Cicero’s references to intellectual women give us a varied picture, as each of these references is designed to produce a precise effect in Cicero’s discourse.

Cicero argues against the absolute reliability of the senses in the construction of human knowledge and brings his species closer to the Platonic idea. However, Cicero promotes human sight as a medium between the mind and the thought that unites the idea and the object, positively evaluating the empirical reality.

Abstract: Cicero's De signis, the fourth speech of the second actio of the Verrines, is an oustanding source for the study of divine statues and the modes of religious perception, knowledge and practices on late republican Rome. Cicero's speech is plenty of informations on these statues, its places, on gestures and emotions related to them, in dealing with religious affectivity. In a brief section of the De signis, we could see the materialisation of the conflict between the (bad) propraetor and the (good) allied people in the divine statues of Apollo, Hercules and Chrysas. Cicero praises the violent responses of local populations against a violent and unworthy Roman magistrate, as Cicero constructs the figure of Verres. The orator does not just reflect concepts and ideas about the deities but, based on shared beliefs, momentary fears and hopes Cicero actually creates them for his audience.

They are products of dialogues, exchanges and controversies. As the result of historical developments, they are not fixed, but dynamic. They are located in a multiplicity of records: in ritual practices; in religious, political and intellectual domains; in debates on legitimacy, authority, identity, and in theological debates in which they emerge as active elements in the unfolding of the arguments. We intend to explore this complex and fascinating problem in a three-day colloquium to be held at UNIRIO, thanks to the support of a British Academic Newton Advanced Fellowship. Our aim is to overcome the convencional disciplinary divides that have all too often hindered scholarly and intellectual exchanges. We will bring together in conversation specialists in Ancient History, Art History, Archaeology, Religious Studies, Classics, Ancient Philosophy and Politics. Our key goal is to broaden the conversation beyond conventionally ‘religious’ domain.

Every new cult was carefully examined and in case approved and adapted to Roman religious concepts by state (Senate in primis) and religious authorities (particularly the pontiffs). From the origins to the case of the Bacchanalia (186 B.C.) and the long phase of the conquests, up to the Codex Theodosianus (438 B. C.) and the Corpus Iuris Civilis (528-534 B. C.), the Romans, «jurists by vocation» (G. Dumézil), face an unending confrontation with other religious systems, hence a constant meditation on their own, in the context of a mutual exchange of influences and adjustements and of an unresolved polarity of religious innovation and extraordinary conservatism (religio from religere, «to choose again»). What part did Law play in Rome (for ex. senatus-consultus, rescript, edict, general law, etc.) from the point of view of religious change?

In general, the different analyses of this text have accepted the nature of this statue as a cult image. From my viewpoint, however, just as he objects to his land being a consecrated space –due to the vices in the ritual of consecration–, Cicero doubts that the simulacrum is truly a representation of the Roman goddess Libertas, by referring to the features of the image, its origin and its use by Clodius. The examination of Cicero’s remarks contributes to a wider study of the simulacra deorum in his texts since he outlines a series of requirements that a statue must fulfill to effectively be the image of a god

TERMINALIA: BOUNDERIES AND SACRED SPACE Abstract: Roman rituals can be analysed as sacralising mechanisms for the political and social order of urbs that institutes the place and the role of everything and everyone in the city, and it’s relationships with the “outside”. On the boundary-marking of proprieties there were not only considerations regarding the economic life, but religious considerations that expressed and reaffirmed the Roman time-space perception. We’ll show, off of literary data, some elements of the Terminalia, dedicated to Terminus, the protector deity of territorial marks which, in turn, legitimized the organizing of space in archaic and republican Rome, and of the propagatio terminorum, which was the base for a conception of territorial limits, dynamical and subject to expansion on time and space. Keywords: Roman Religion; Religion and Politics; Discourses and Rituals; Sacred Order; Terminalia.

THE LAST DANCE OF THE SALIANS: ROMAN PAGAN ELITE AND CHRISTIAN EMPERORS IN 4th CE. Abstract: How Pagan elite reacted to the laws that gradually limited the traditional religion and impose the Christian faith? By which ways the Roman nobles tried, at first, coexist, resist and then adapt and engage them with the new situation? There was a fierce armed resistance, or, conversely, a peaceful change? Our case study will be an inscription about the Salians, an old priesthood traditionally occupied by young Roman patricians. In the absence of their maximus, the pontifices act autonomously, trying to carry on the practice of their ancestral rites and restoring old religious buildings, in this case the mansiones of the Salians, abandoned long time ago.Based on the laws in the Book VII of the Theodosian Code, we can analyze the process of religious change within Roman elite, which was more complex than is commonly realized, including actions and reactions, resistance and commitments until an inevitable conversion. Keywords: Roman religion; Salian priesthood; Religious change.

Abstract: The Forum Romanum was the locus for the production of the cultural meaning of gender in Ancient Rome, as pace structured to the acting and development of the male businesses: political speeches, the assessment of the censors, jury triais, and so on there occurred. Elsewhere, was carried on the women ' .s businesses, next to the temple ofMater Matuta, around the Forum Boarium, and the most important women s cults were held outside the Forum Romanum, with the unsurprising exception of Vesta 's temple. Each year on the Liberalia, the Roman boys of the "good families" were brought by their fathers or tutors to the Forum, to submint before a rite de passage, and if they satisfied its exigencies, they were granted the toga virilis. The "tirocinium fori" (recruitment to the forum), the culmination of the Liberalia rits, mirrored the "Tirocinium rnilítae'', producing the male body in its place, its clothes and its behavior. An importantfactor for the youngest success in the rites was the rethorical training. The orathory was fit to the men, distinguishing them form the women, from who was expected chatisty and, therefore, silence. Cicero in Brutus and in Pro Caelico shows how this male educational process was structured. The rethorical training was fundamental in the formation of a public man. The forum was a locus of the good orator and the good citizen, producing the identity of the "vir bonus". Keywords: orator; rhetoric; gender.

Palavras-chave: Instituições Romanas; Literatura; Horácio.
Abstract: This paper seeks an analysis of the celebrated expression carpe diem in its relation with the feminine image that rises on the Carmen Saecularis, poem in which the author presents a woman-identified as Fortuna-controled by her wedding and using it as a tool for the reconstruction of the virtus and the urbs itself under Augustus control, after decades of civil war, as a happiness insurance. Abstract: Cicero's speech in defense of the accused Catilinarian P. Sulla is also a defense of the orator himself, both for his actions during hist consulship and for the very fact that he has undertaken the defense. In this judicial oration so involved with personal and political justifications of the patronus, we can see the role of the argument from complexio in an overtly ethical persuasive arena.

TERMINALIA: BOUNDERIES AND SACRED SPACE
Abstract: Roman rituals can be analysed as sacralising mechanisms for the political and social order of urbs that institutes the place and the role of everything and everyone in the city, and it’s relationships with the “outside”.
