The ever-more radical separation between structure and shell entrusts that the latter become the expressive and communicative functions of the building. This appears to represent a belated victory for the once famous "Bekleidung-prinzip"which, though first expressed a century ago, opened the discussion over an articulated and problematic phenomenon, whose basis we can investigate today with technical know-how and new theoretical knowledge. The evolutionary dynamics of the processes of planning and building in architecture, external factors related to the marketplace and the production of new materials filled with untapped expressive potential, the increase in the demand for results and performance of the building system, all these have had their influence on the phenomenon.

The paper aims to investigate, in particular, how the role of digital technologies, the key players in a full- blown transformation of thought, impacts the designer’s education models and has a tendency to redefine both the boundaries between disciplines and the very role of the designer. Some significant international ex- periences in the field of the education of de- signers show that a humanistic approach to controlling technologies and to “ubiquitous” cooperation among strains of knowledge presents a possible scenario of profound rethinking of the role of the technological designer within a framework of shared fra- gility of the planet’s economic models.

It has defined sustainable models, typologies and technologies for high-rise residential settlements in Chinese cities. The high-rise building and the technological implications, which affect the morphological structures, are the subject of study of influential research centres in the perspective of reducing energy consumption, through morphological control solutions and at the envelope scale. In this specific he definition of some technological systems, replicable in other application contexts, was a decisive element for the development of the research following the competition project.

Biennale di Venezia Absorbing Modernity 1914–2014 at the 14th International.
New regional legislation and the institution of a Strategic Plan have begun a process of urban transformation based on an innovative model of a compact, integrated and sustainable city. After the framework agreement with ENEA (the Italian National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development) in 2010 to implement projects to upgrade its building heritage, Bari is a candidate for the «Smart Cities & Communities» project and will launch its candidature for European Capital of Culture 2019. This text will analyse examples of valorisation of Bari’s public building heritage with a focus on case studies of major strategic importance, with the aim of identifying possible ethical-aesthetic values in the relationship between the dynamics of urban transformation and architectural quality.

The most modern updated legislation is also headed in this direction: considering building stock as a resource for renovation, adopting policies and strategies aimed at reducing land and energy consumption, reusing and recycling building stock. Nowadays, the interpretation of the terms Reduce, Reuse, Recycle in relation to urban development offers the opportunity to create a new generation of spaces and architectures that sees buildings – dilapidated, neglected, worn out or abandoned – as a real resource and, hence, value. Renovations concern new programmes and projects for rethinking the uses, meanings and the values contained in existing construction (from individual buildings to whole neighbourhoods) and which can change. Within this scenario, suburbs are now considered part of the contemporary city and they are becoming the object of particular attention from those who are involved in urban planning and managing urban developments. Among the resources that have already been built, social housing stock is a wide field of investigation, from different points of view. This built heritage can involve different levels of building and space transformation and defines various design approaches: the overall architectural quality is to be acknowledged. These design approaches reinterpret regeneration activities and are not just limited to the 'technical' renovation of buildings: they also take into account the consequent urban, social and economic implications.
