Winter on architectural terracottas in Etruria and central Italy from 640 to 510 B.C., discusses in particular the evidence from Tuscania. It is focused on the most important Archaic necropoleis in Tuscania, Ara del Tufo and Sasso Pizzuto, and now on the recent discoveries at Guadocinto, published in 2010, but not considered by Nancy Winter. Ibe analysis disproves Nancy Winter's assessment of Ara del Tufo and confirms that all the terracottas belong to one unique building. This attribution is demonstrated by the constant association in the same archaeological layer of the departures scenes I and IT Tuscania types-with the Acquarossa types C and D, together with antefixes of the Ara del T ufo type and cutout acroteria, elements that might have been used over a long period of time in Tuscania, even if they have a considerably earlier origin. Referring to the Louvre acroteria, assigned by Nancy Wmter to the second roof of Ara del Tufo, it is important to stress how their provenience from Tuscania is nowadays not sure. The paper contains also the first presentation of simas with convex strigils and a painted band with braid motive (guil loche) from Sasso Pizzuto. Finally, on the basis of such a huge number and variety of arcrutec tonical terracottas coming from Tuscania, the authors express doubts about the hypothesis of a production in Acquarossa of the Ara del Tufo roofs, as proposed by Nancy \Vmter. On the contrary it is possible to recognize the presence of terracottas workshops located in Tuscania, confirming the peculiar role played by the town in the Archaic period. The well-known evi dence from Vulci (analyzed by Nancy Winter) reveals the presence of skilled and specialized workers who created and distributed the same models at sites such as Murlo or Poggio Buco, but also maintained long-distance relationships, linking Vulei with Rome. New data-some of which are the earliest evidence from Vulci-come from a monumental building with a public sacred function facing the eastern forum of the town, on the western slopes of the acropolis, where also a dedicatory inscription to Maris was found. The presence at Vulci, from the Early Archaic period, of the meander frieze, on different types of moulds, is stressed as a possible connection with Campania production.
