Nell'ambito del più ampio fenomeno della decorazione gentilizia nel ventennio compreso tra il 154... more Nell'ambito del più ampio fenomeno della decorazione gentilizia nel ventennio compreso tra il 1540 e il 1560 una fitta catena di relazioni familiari e politico - curiali irradiate intorno alla figura di papa Paolo III Farnese è stata il presupposto di numerose commissioni per la realizzazione di cantieri di decorazione ad affresco in contesti urbani e suburbani, a Roma e nei dintorni: dalla considerazione di quattordici committenti farnesiani emerge, infatti, come nove personaggi hanno attribuito l'incarico a Perino del Vaga, alla sua bottega o ad artisti che con diverse modalità gli gravitano attorno; inoltre, osservando quindici residenze riconducibili a tale ambito si nota che in sette palazzi (quattro della famiglia Farnese e tre della relativa cerchia) ricorre lo stesso tema desunto dall'antico, quello del corteo di figure danzanti. Lo studio evidenzia così alcune ricorrenze qualificanti e peculiari dei cantieri pittorici farnesiani favorendo la ricostruzione delle dinamiche generali della complessa macchina del lavoro artistico in questi anni.

In the years following 1870 a huge part of Rome’s artistic heritage was involved in the confiscat... more In the years following 1870 a huge part of Rome’s artistic heritage was involved in the confiscation of ecclesiastical properties. Of the 221 building owned by religious associations, 126 were confiscated, deprived of artistic furnishings, re-used, sold or destroyed.
This, then, was a crucial moment in the history of the how Italy was to manage its cultural heritage. The new structures set up by the Italian State were tested both for their knowledge and conservation abilities.
Negli anni che seguono il 1870 una parte di enorme rilievo del patrimonio artistico romano fu investita dal decisivo evento della soppressione delle corporazioni religiose. Delle duecentoventuno case religiose esistenti a Roma, centoventisei vennero soppresse ed i rispettivi fabbricati furono indemaniati, vuotati degli arredi liturgici, destinati al riuso, venduti o distrutti. Si trattò, dunque, di un momento cruciale per la storia della gestione del patrimonio culturale che impegnò in modo incisivo le nuove strutture dello Stato ad essa preposte in un’articolata attività di conoscenza e tutela.

A seguito del ritrovamento nei depositi dell’Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma dei fregi che decora... more A seguito del ritrovamento nei depositi dell’Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma dei fregi che decoravano il demolito palazzo di Paolo III Farnese al Campidoglio, si analizza il ruolo svolto nel cantiere da Michele Lucchese, remunerato per la realizzazione degli affreschi, che sono connotati da una marcata influenza stilistica di Perino del Vaga. Viene ipotizzata l’esistenza di un’associazione temporanea di impresa composta da Perino del Vaga e da Michele Lucchese: un tipo di bottega a struttura mobile, composta da più parti, ognuna delle quali doveva avere la capacità di operare in modo autonomo, avvalendosi però dell’impronta e dei modelli di Perino.
Le invenzioni presenti negli affreschi sono in gran parte derivate da modelli dall’antico. Tema dominante è quello della danza. Alcuni dei fregi rappresentano una teoria di danzatori, composta da eleganti fanciulle, da un vecchia dal seno cadente, da un uomo barbuto ed uno incappucciato, che si tengono per mano o per il bordo della veste. Altri raffigurano putti ed amorini in cerchio intenti al ballo.
Il tema delle dame e cavalieri in fila che intrecciano eleganti danze, negli anni centrali del Cinquecento, doveva rispondere al gusto dell’epoca, tanto da suscitare una diffusione particolarmente intensa in molti palazzi e ville ricollegabili, per via di parentela o via politico-curiale, alla famiglia Farnese. L’indagine, quindi, si estende ad altri cantieri farnesiani, mettendo in evidenza caratteristiche ricorrenti di funzionamento delle équipe coinvolte ed una circolazione di artisti di ambito prevalentemente perinesco. Tramite i disegni, anche i modelli dall’antico circolano all’interno dei gruppi di pittori al lavoro nella stessa impresa decorativa e sono trasmessi alle rispettive botteghe e alle loro filiazioni e articolazioni.
La piacevolezza del motivo delle danze, ne ha garantito una lunga durata, ben al di là della cerchia farnesiana e dell’ambito cronologico considerato. Nel tentativo di ricostruire una sorta di geografia della diffusione del tema, sono prese in considerazione le tante variazioni del soggetto che hanno popolato le dimore gentilizie del Cinquecento,e non solo.
Viene inoltre ricostruito il profilo di Michele Lucchese, pittore, incisore e mercante di stampe, la cui attività si svolse all’ombra dei Farnese, ed in particolare del cardinale Guido Ascanio Sforza di Santa Fiora, nipote di Paolo III. Parte della sua produzione incisoria viene letta come un tassello del complesso fenomeno della circolazione dei modelli tra Italia e Francia nel Cinquecento.
