“Infinito fu il tempo, uomo, prima che tu venissi alla luce, e infinito sarà quello dell’Ade”: questo epigramma attribuito al poeta Leonida di Taranto esprime l’inevitabilità del momento di passaggio da un mondo all’altro che la morte rappresenta, affrontato dalle popolazioni antiche secondo le proprie concezioni culturali e pratiche socio-religiose. Nel caso dell’Italia meridionale, l’archeologia della morte offre un osservatorio privilegiato dei meccanismi culturali in un periodo di mutazioni politiche, sociali e artistiche, dopo il progressivo indebolimento dei poteri politici del periodo arcaico e prima dell’espansione romana.
Concentrandosi, quindi, più specificamente sul mondo funerario dell’Italia meridionale dalla fine del VI all’inizio del III secolo a.C., questo libro affronta tale momento, punto di svolta cruciale per la formazione delle identità culturali, a partire da diversi temi tra loro interconnessi: la storia dell’archeologia funeraria, le nozioni di spazio e pratiche funerarie, l’antropologia biologica e culturale, nonché il tema delle immagini in contesto. Riunendo le ricerche di specialisti affermati e giovani studiosi dell’Italia preromana, è il risultato degli atti dell’incontro franco-italiano tenutosi all’Institut national d’histoire de l’art di Parigi il 24 e 25 marzo 2017.
Il percorso seguito, dagli scavi ottocenteschi all’immaginario delle élite campane e lucane, attraverso anche lo studio della struttura del paesaggio e delle pratiche funerarie greche ed italiche, permette di evidenziare la ricchezza e la complessità delle espressioni simboliche e materiali adottate dalle comunità che popolavano la penisola.
“Infini, homme, était le temps écoulé avant que tu vinsses à l’aurore, et infini est celui qui t’attend chez Hadès” : cette épigramme attribuée au poète Léonidas de Tarente dit toute l’inéluctabilité de ce moment de passage d’un monde à l’autre que représente la mort, affronté par les populations antiques selon leurs propres conceptions culturelles et pratiques socio-religieuses. Dans le cas de l’Italie du Sud, l’archéologie de la mort offre un témoignage privilégié des mécanismes culturels à l’œuvre dans une période de mutations politiques, sociales et artistiques, à la suite de l’affaiblissement progressif des puissances politiques de l’époque archaïque et en amont de l’expansion romaine.
Cet ouvrage, en s’intéressant plus spécifiquement au monde funéraire de l’Italie du Sud de la fin du VIe au début du IIIe siècle av. J.-C., aborde ce tournant crucial pour la formation des identités culturelles à partir de plusieurs thématiques entrecroisées : l’histoire de l’archéologie funéraire, les notions d’espaces et de pratiques funéraires, l’anthropologie biologique et culturelle ainsi que le thème des images en contextes. Réunissant les recherches de spécialistes confirmés et de jeunes chercheurs en Italie préromaine, il est le fruit des actes de la rencontre franco‑italienne tenue à l’Institut national d’histoire de l’art à Paris les 24 et 25 mars 2017.
Le chemin poursuivi, des fouilles du XIXe siècle à l’imagerie des élites campaniennes et lucaniennes, en passant par l’étude de la structuration du paysage et des pratiques funéraires grecques et italiques, permet de mettre en lumière toute la richesse et la complexité des expressions symboliques et matérielles mises au service des communautés qui peuplaient la péninsule.
