The Hortus deliciarum manuscript was written during the second half of the 12th century in Alsace... more The Hortus deliciarum manuscript was written during the second half of the 12th century in Alsace, probably at the abbey of Hohenbourg, nowadays the Mont Sainte-Odile. The canonesses community was then rulled by the abbess Herrade, who should be the instigator of this work, or at least the author of some of its poems.
This « Garden of delights » was a didactic work made for spiritual and intellectual education of the nuns. Among the textes dealing with theology and scientific knowledge, some folii were dedicated to the representation of the allegorical fights between Virtues and Vices, inspired by Prudentius' poetical work the Psychomachia.
Since the Hortus deliciarum was destroyed in 1870 during the siege of Strasbourg by the Prussian army, all that remains from it are copies of texts and miniatures made during the 19th century. The paintings of the Psychomachia took ten full-pages from f°199v to f°204r, and the only texts related to this part were the sentences written directly among the book's miniatures.
Thus, our study is based on those materials, especially the copies made by Auguste de Bastard's workshop in Paris in 1839-1848, that are to be considered as testimony of manuscript original state.
