The pilgrimage with all its associated cultural and religious implications was a deeply rooted phenomenon throughout the medieval period. All the pilgrims, men and women, knew very well that the pilgrimage' s experience contributed to change their perspectives and to remove-albeit temporarily-the certainties linked to their home country, town, house, and family. Over the course of the centuries, this movement of thousands of people contributed to establish and develop a network of paths, by land and sea, through which they could move from the remotest places of Asia, and Europe, to the main destinations of the so-called peregrinations majores, that were Rome, Jerusalem, and, from the eleventh century, Santiago de Compostela (Stopani 1991, 1-12).

The aim of this paper is to provide a historiographical overview of the Irish migrations to France from the second half of the sixteenth to the early nineteenth centuries. Over the last fifteen years, research on Irish migrations to France and the rest of Europe during this period has generated an impressive amount of scholarship, thus demonstrating how this can be considered a phenomenon which anticipated the great Irish diaspora of the nineteenth century.

The aim of this essay is to provide a historiographical overview of the Irish community in Rome from 1377, the year of the Papacy's return from the Avignon exile, until 1870, when the city was annexed to the kingdom of Italy. Given the long period examined, this article does not provide a comprehensive picture and, consequently, should be seen as a work in progress which will be revised and improved thanks to further archival and bibliographical research.

The aim of this essay is to provide an overview of the scholarship on the Irish migrations during the early-modern period. In the last fifteen years historians have displayed a growing interest to the flux of Irish migrants who, from the second half of the sixteenth century up until the early decades of the nineteenth century, fled from Ireland and established on continental Europe. Research on the Irish communities who established in Bohemia, France, Iberian Peninsula, Italian Peninsula and the Spanish Flanders have demonstrated the existence of a web of networks through which the Irish migrants moved across continental Europe, thus anticipating the great Irish diaspora of the nineteenth century. Given the complexity of this theme, this article does not claim to provide a comprehensive picture and, consequently, should be considered as a work in progress which will be revised and improved thanks to further bibliographical references.
