Papers by Dario Capelli
(pseudo-)medieval scenarios are depicted in black metal, in order to
outline possible similarities and differences in contents, representations,
and messages of the Middle Ages on the part of different bands. In the
first paragraph, a short story of black metal will be sketched as an
introduction; secondly, darkness and war will be discussed in relationship
with their application in black metal lyrics, melodies, and performances.
In the third, and last final part of this essay, some particularly relevant
and influential groups will be presented as case studies, with a focus on
the differences and the similarities between their ways to intend and play
black metal.
Conference Organization by Dario Capelli
The concepts of good and evil are expressed, from a lexical point of view, in different ways in different Germanic languages and at the same time they are declined in different forms depending on linguistic and literary traditions. We encourage prospective participants to submit proposals which deal with the theme from a literary, philological, linguistic and/or historical perspective.

Three texts have been chosen: the "Hildebrandslied" (Old High German), Walther von der Vogelweide's "Palästinalied" (Middle High German) and the "Hávamál", second poem of the Old Norse Poetic Edda.
I decided to focus on the German metal scene since it is one of the most active and productive in the entire world and every year many German bands release new albums concerning Medieval texts.
