The exploration dwells in particular on the notion of personal and collective trauma, and the close correlation – with Platonovian overtones – between language and memory. Situating at first Rymbu's poetic production within the macrocontext of the new Russian civil poetry (grazhdanskaia poeziia) of the last decade, which comes imbued on the one hand with the Russian literary tradition, on the other hand with the new post-structuralist tendencies, the analysis investigates the way through which the Siberian urban geography described by the poet is inserted in the wider reflection on marginalia, thus challenging the dominant narratives both in terms of the perspective of the narrating voice and of its object of attention.

Through this kind of homage, Levkin's poetics rejects realism and conventional narrative categories.

In this text the writer commemorates his poetic experience as a young member of the SMOG underground group in Moscow in the early 1960s. However, unlike other memories published on the matter by former smogists, this is a highly lyrical work that recreates the atmosphere and the emotional drive felt by the young poets back then. In analyzing the short text, it is possible to enucleate the structure, the motifs, the images, as well as the collage through which the author puts together the «shared notebook» of the group. The text is the result of the harmonic and organic interweaving of verses and images taken from other smogists, as well as from the smogists’ literary models.

If defamiliarization, in Shklovsky's terms, is the basis of poetic language, in Sokolov's text this technique lies at the basis of both form and content. In this sense, Sokolov overcomes the "dictatorship" of the plot (the "What") in literature, electing the "How" as aesthetic principle able to structure and organize literary texts.

In concocting the most appropriate voice for this narrative, the author constructed a language, defined by one of the heroes as “Volapuke,” a 19th-century constructed idiom (Volapük). In Sokolov’s “Volapuke,” every trope, word, and even grapheme is allowed to transfigure into its direct, objectified meaning. As for the voices that weave together the linguistic threads, there are many, and at the same time they are all combined into one. Like all of Sasha Sokolov’s novels, Mezhdu sobakoi i volkom reminds the reader of the natural plurality of voices that is to be found within oneself.

Although unexplored by critics, references to Lorca can be traced in different literary works by Sokolov. The Spanish poet has always represented a source of reference and a model throughout Sokolov’s literary lifetime.

Taking into consideration the strong Russian tradition that closely links standard language (literaturnyi iazyk) and the language of literature (iazyk literatury), and consequently “the role of literature in establishing and maintaining the standard language” (34), Ingunn Lunde explores debates and discussions that have taken hold in contemporary Russia, analyzing in particular writers’ responses to them, both explicit (through interviews, for example) and implicit (in their literary works).
