The sources for this study were taken from the literature and researched by the SISNEA-UFSC, who center its focus in the Azorean Based Culture. As a preliminary result it emerged substantial data proving that the rabeca is or was present in a large coastal area, with acting presence in dances (Fandango, Chamarrita and São Gonçalo) and Folguedos (Boi-de-Mamão, Cantoria do Divino e Terno de Reis). In the final section there are same questions about the role of the rabeca in the music and culture of the region.

It brings two examples of " Toadas de cego " found at the Mário de Andrade's Archive, probably not published, and presents biographical data, talking about the genres employed by three of these singers. It treats also about some characteristics of the " cantoria nordestina " and its insertion in the concept of moving elaborated by Paul Zumthor.

These performers expressed themselves through a poetics in which their circumstances as men deprived of vision and their instruments became themes that inspired their artistic creations. Such a manifestation incorporated the archetypes of the blind poetsinger and the blind fiddler, widely diffused both geographically and historically, as do the poetic, musical elements of two traditional figures from the same region: the blind man who begs for alms while singing and the northeastern cantador [singer]. Most of these rabequeiros depended on handouts to survive, begging in exchange for songs accompanied by the rabeca [Brazilian fiddle].

Consulting printed sources, as well as documents made available by IEB-USP, we established the existence of unpublished manuscripts. Based on the literature, we discuss the genres that document the rabeca in Andrade’s works, such as Bumba-meu-boi and cantoria. This collection represents a wide variety of repertoire for the instrument. It seeks to bring to light and unite
the musical material introduced by Vilemão Trindade--scattered throughout a number of Andrade’s books posthumously published by Oneyda Alvarenga--as an important source of reference for the practice of music where the rabeca is a central instrument and a significant
example of Brazilian musicianship.

The musical data gathered from this research serve as a starting point for the exploration of the universe of oral tradition in respect to Brazilian-fiddles, while also unveiling rabecas in Mário de Andrade. The data reveals that Andrade had a resource, Vilemão da Trindade, who was a fiddler of great ability that today opens the possibility to understanding this material from an emic perspective in which the Brazilian-fiddle assumes it own musical potential through the spatio-motor thinking patterns inherent to the instrument. These examples stress the importance of musical gesture for analyses of a phenomenological nature, dissociating itself from the detachment and rationality of the notation in the score.

Part of the pieces was played in Brazilian fiddles, for analysis through the approach of ‗learning to perform‘, as presented by John Baily. The dissertation presents the content in three chapters: the first discusses the ethnomusicological research with musical instruments; the second is about the Brazilian fiddles; the last one brings the repertoire of these instruments found inside the Mário de Andrade‘s work and a proposal of how to approach it in a practical way.
