Contemporary literary works portray Muslim women in a new light not commonly seen in the Western media. Muslim women writers have engaged in a mission to respond to the Western stereotype by illustrating the reality about Muslim women conditions and the true Islam. In Does My Head Look Big in This? (2005) and Minaret (2005), Randa Abdel-Fatteh and Leila Aboulila respectively defy not only the pressure that resulted from prejudice and discrimination, but also which negatively impacted their psychological well-being. This article attempts to shed light on how Muslim women articulate their feminism and the positive impact of spirituality on their mental health.
The euphoria of independence in Nigeria was followed by bitter disillusionment as different sorts... more The euphoria of independence in Nigeria was followed by bitter disillusionment as different sorts of predicaments became the fate of the population: poverty, famine, corruption, and civil war. In such situations, can the writer remain indifferent? This was not the case of two writers, Wole Soyinka and Ken Saro-Wiwa, whose violent confrontations with the authorities led them to jail, followed respectively by exile and execution. Soyinka’s The Man Died: Prison Notes and Saro-Wiwa’s A Month and a Day: A Detention Diary reflect the status quo of colonialism and neo-colonialism in Nigeria, two different stages of what is commonly known as globalization.
This article is an experimental study report on a scientific English writing course, following th... more This article is an experimental study report on a scientific English writing course, following the flipped learning approach. The needs analysis based on observation, questionnaire, interview, and diagnostic test, served as a basis for designing a flipped learning course that blends face-to-face instruction with online interaction. The experimental group received pre-class instructional videos and practice tasks in the class whereas the control group studied the same lessons in a traditional classroom setting. Both groups answered the same pre-test and post-test, and the post-test showed a considerably improved writing performance in the experimental group that can be attributed to the flipped learning model. Students in this experimental group equally expressed positive attitudes towards this model.
It is not an anachronism today to write about colonialism, since a great number of indigenous peo... more It is not an anachronism today to write about colonialism, since a great number of indigenous peoples across the world still live under oppressive regimes that can be described as “internal colonies”. Indigenous storytellers and writers, who believe their peoples are victims of genocidal policies, undertake the task of historical revisionism, adapting ancient myths to their changing preoccupations, and correcting longstanding fallacies and stereotypes. By analyzing and subverting colonial master narratives, their auto-ethnographic texts serve as holistic healing narratives. This article hence adopts a multi-disciplinary approach to fathom the causes, symptoms and healing patterns of indigenous trauma, and focuses, among other perspectives, on the recent postcolonial, environmental, and narrative turns in the humanities. Przedstawia gynokratyczną społeczność, w której kobiety zajmują kluczową pozycję jako przywódczynie, gawędziarki czy szamanki. W powieści feminizm tubylczy krzyżuje się z ekofeminizmem, podkreślając symboliczne powiązania kobieta–natura, a także rolę kobiety w ochronie środowiska.
Interest in African literature and translation is relatively new; it mainly emerged in the 1990s ... more Interest in African literature and translation is relatively new; it mainly emerged in the 1990s with the postcolonial turn in translation studies, under the influence of the cultural turn, the polysystems theory and the “Manipulation School”. Many African writers describe themselves as intercultural translators; they hover over the following questions: Is it a form of selfdenigration not to use one’s mother tongue as a medium of literary creation? How can their literary creations account for their postcolonial experience in the languages of former colonizers? Can these languages render the specificities of their distinct cultural worldviews? The linguistic choice made by African writers is hence highly political because it involves a compromise that rests on power relations. Their writing often involves a sort of translation from Source Language (SL) to Target Language (TL) whether through ethnotextual mental translation or self-translation.
