During the rule of the Ptolemies, Egyptian priests gathered in assemblies called “synods” by mode... more During the rule of the Ptolemies, Egyptian priests gathered in assemblies called “synods” by modern scholars. Nevertheless, the decrees issued from these synods cover a relatively short period of time: from 243 to ca. 180 BC, or at the latest until ca. 160 BC. Taking into account the content of the decrees and the general historical context, we propose that the synods indeed disappeared due to the success of their initial goals: the implementation of the royal cult in the Egyptian temples and, more generally, ensuring the loyalty of their leaders.

Cet article s’attache à montrer comment, en cohérence avec l’ensemble des Histoires, l’historien disqualifie le soulèvement lorsqu'il souligne le caractère transgressif des violences commises, le rôle actif des femmes et la propension des Alexandrins à se comporter comme des non-Grecs.

Because of the variety of documentation it provides and the diversity of the population it hosts,... more Because of the variety of documentation it provides and the diversity of the population it hosts, Egypt during the Persian, Ptolemaic and Roman period might appear as a particularly convenient span to the study of ethnic identities. If, actually, these are often very difficult to define, the Egyptian case allows us at least to think about some of the major problems, both theoretical and practical, aroused by the possible relationships between such identities and the material culture data.
