Towards a Didactic of the Medieval French Language. After over a century of research in philology and linguistics, a reassessment of the aims and objectives of medieval language teaching in the French university curriculum seems necessary. The dialogue between these two fields does not appear to be very strong where the CAPES and Agrégation are concerned ; indeed it seems rather timid, if it exists at all. Historical phonetics and morphosyntax, amongst others, present a certain view of Old French, which very often does not exist anywhere else than in the manuals, but which conditions most of the medieval literary teaching practice. Such an approach cannot easily coexist with the principles demonstrated by other disciplines (i.e. the sociolinguistics or history of the French language). A proper didactic reflexion is obviously needed, should one wish to avoid an ever-growing confusion amongst teachers and students. Based on a methodological survey, this article examines two of the principal competences currently expected from the students : historical phonetics and morphosyntax, recent studies in the history of the French language being the reference background for this evaluation. The study of the evolution of *seior > sire and the description of proper names in the vocative function illustrate these two points.

When speech acts are under penal scrutiny, the analysis of the utterances in question is still often limited to a lexicographic approach when a large scope of levels of analysis should be taken into account (syntactic, morphological, enunciative, pragmatic and / or phonetic). Many countries in the world (the USA, UK, Australia, etc.) have already granted a proper status to their linguists mainly because Common Law requires experts. However States under the Civil Law regime still do not recognize or even employ linguists, whereas lawyers are starting to involve them in trials. These considerations are developed in section 1, describing the French penal context. The second section presents the different stages of a discourse analysis study produced by the author for a trial between the State and a French rap singer, Hamé, of La Rumeur, accused of defamation against the French police force in 2002. Violent speech acts are punishable under French law, so the criteria defining the act and stated in the claim are essential, as the label of the crime cannot change once the trial has started and is constantly debated by both sides during the trial. This type of analysis is also at stake in a different way during the trial itself, as will be underlined: the qualification of the crime represents per se a semantic and pragmatic interpretation of meaning, therefore constantly framing the reading of the different sides. While proving that a text is (or is not) insulting or defamatory is not supposed to be the linguist’s task, providing a set of methodological means in order to clear misunderstandings, narrow readings or even misinterpretations is important. The linguistic document provided for the defence of the band is described.
