Im Fokus dieses projekts steht die Aufbereitung des Korpus ,,Österreichische Dialektaufnahmen im 20. Jahrhundert,,, dessen Aufnahmen (auf Magnetband) die (basis)dialektalen Varietäten des 20. Jahr_ hunderts in ÖsterreÍch repräsentieren. Im Rahmen des projekts wÍrd das Ton-und Dokumentationsmaterial erstmals vollstándig digitalisiert und erschlossen. Der Beitrag geht auf den wert dieser einmaligen Daten gerade für die sprachwissenschaftliche Forschung ein. The article presents a cooperation project ofthe research department ,,Vari ation and Change of German in Austria,, (VawaDiö) (ACDH-öAW) and the Phonogrammarchiv (PhA), both Austrian Academy of Sciences. The project focuses on the digitization and (pre)processing of the corpus 'Austrian Dia-Iect Recordings from the 2Oth Century,,, a corpus ofaudio recordings on mag_ netic tape that capture the base dialects of German in Austria in the 20th century. In our project, ali audio recordings and documentary materials will be fully digitized and utilized. The article also highlights the imporrance of these unique data for linguistlc research.

Abstract: The contribution focuses on passive constructions whose auxiliaries emerged from full verbs with GET and/or GIVE semantics and therefore from verbs of the sematic network of transfer verbs. In addition to the conceptual proximity to the source of the passive auxiliary, the passive constructions also show language-geographic overlapping. In spite of these noticeable (cognitive-semantic and areal-typological) parallels, a comprehensive study of the GIVE and GET passives in German and Luxembourgish has remained a research gap, which will now be filled in by the contribution. For this purpose, the grammaticalisation paths of GIVE and GET passives as well as of their auxiliaries will be traced-on the basis of panchronic analyses-by direct comparison.

It describes the setup for the investigation of numerous syntactic phenomena and provides a sample study of the German GET passive across Austria. It also suggests that LPEs offer possibilities for the targeted investigation of linguistic variation in various ways. They may be used to explore speakers' individual linguistic repertoires and an according corpus setup can be used to examine e.g., interspeaker patterns of variation. LPEs also enable researchers to investigate which linguistic factors control or influence syntactic variation.

While the norm status and a high socio-symbolic value are attributed to certain lexical variants of standard language in Austria, the norm and usage status of characteristic phonetic properties remain unclear, due to lack of empirical analyses. By investigating the relation between standard language norms and "standard usage" (Ge-brauchsstandard) in Austria, our study aims to close this research gap by using the example of unstressed ‹-ig›. The analyses are based on data gathered from 52 speakers from two generations, covering all Austrian dialect regions. Elicitation settings varied from strongly standardized tasks with a graphic or visual stimulus (reading aloud tasks, picture naming tasks) to translation tasks (translation from dialect into standard) with oral stimuli. The results demonstrate that although ‹-ig› is predominantly pronounced like [ɪk], (socio-)linguistic factors as phonetic context, part of speech, setting, gender and regional background influence the ‹-ig›-variation. In total, the data suggest that German speaking Austrians are situated in a conflict between transnationally diverging norms and intra-nationally varying model speakers of German.
Tracing a standard language in Austria using methodological microvariations of Verbal and Matched Guise Technique, 2020

Two series of comprehensive listener judgment tests based on 536 informants, considering different sociolinguistic parameters and assumptions on model speakers, indicate shift-ings away from competing (country-specific) conceptualizations towards heterogeneous dimensions of "standard in Austria" with complex evaluative patterns.

We investigate CA drawing on a corpus of 144 speakers from 13 locations across Austria that was elicited through computer supported language production experiments and recorded in conversations. We investigate the linguistic factors that govern the occurrence of CA, as well as its areal distribution. We further explore the role of CA in speakers' linguistic repertoires. The study finds evidence for the hypothesis that the (non-)occurrence of CA is strongly dependent on the structure of its host-ing C-elements and finds regional patterns. It also identifies CA as a phenomenon which speakers place in a non-standard register. We use the collected data to test a theory of the emergence of CA from clitic pronouns for Bavarian varieties of German.

In particular, vertical-social variation on the dialect/standard axis have only sparingly been investigated in previous lexical studies and projects, something that is rather surprising given that investigations on lexical phenomena ('special words') have been a prominent focus in traditional dialectology and also count as one of the most interesting system levels from the speakers' perspective. In this paper we present an investigation on lexical phenomena conducted by means of a nationwide questionnaire, taking into account intra-individual variation. The main aim of the questionnaire survey was to collect data on the lexical variation of the German language in Austria, which firstly enables statements to be made about the areal-horizontal and vertical-social dimension of lexical variation.

Es zeigt sich, dass die Wahl der Possessivvarianten maßgeblich durch intra-sowie extralinguistische Parameter gesteuert wird. Substantivklasse und Situation erweisen sich als besonders entscheidende Faktoren für Variation. This paper investigates horizontal as well as vertical variation and change of adnominal possessive constructions in rural areas in Austria. The analyses are based on a unique corpus consisting of more "free" and more "controlled" data. Intra-as well as extralinguistic parameters control the choice of possessive variants. The nominal realisation of the possessor as well as the situational context turn out to be particularly determinant factors of variation.

'to give') functioning as a PUT verb, i.e. a basic verb of goal-oriented placement. While German has been classified as a PUT-less language in previous research, initial studies on the German language in Austria show that geben seems to be spreading increasingly as a basic PUT verb, starting from the language area of Vienna. The research desiderata of this thus far overlooked phenomenon include empirically substantiated findings on its areal-horizontal and vertical-social distribution in contemporary German. In order to close this research gap, the article draws on data from a survey throughout Austria. Therein, two different registers of the dialect-standard-axis of each participant were accessed in order to assess intra-individual variation on a lexical level.

On the basis of comprehensive historical and contemporary data from German varieties and Slavic languages our analyses provide evidence for the central hypothesis that this phenomenon traces back to language contact with Czech as already suggested by various scholars in the 19th century. This assumption is also supported by the fact that Czech dát ‘give’ in PUT function has been accounted for since the Old Czech period as well as by its high frequency in both formal and informal Czech written texts. Moreover, our data analyses show that geben ‘give’ as a PUT verb has been and is still areally distributed along and spreading from the contact area of Czech and Upper German varieties.
